Timothy Sibusiso Muntu 'Nganono' Nxumalo

30 November 2023 - PART 2 - Timothy Sibusiso Muntu Nxumalo was born in 1957 and grew up in Chesterville, Durban. He was the eldest son of the late Pastor, Reverend Clifford Ndoda Nxumalo, and the late Mrs. Alice Nomabhunu. In the midst of the heightened struggle against apartheid in the mid-1970s, he joined the African National Congress military wing, Umkhonto WeSizwe (MKMVA) and subsequently went into exile across different countries. His training took place in Angola between 1977 and 1978.
Returning to the country in 1978, Muntu Nxumalo actively participated in Umkhonto WeSizwe operations in KwaZulu-Natal. However, he faced arrest in 1978, charged with treason and attempted murder, and was sentenced to 22 years at Robben Island Prison. His imprisonment spanned from November 30, 1978, to April 27, 1991.
After serving 13 years, he was released as part of an agreement between the ANC and the NP. Muntu Nxumalo continues to be a dedicated member of the ANC, contributing in various capacities. Additionally, he is an ordained pastor actively engaged in diverse cultural activities.
Sharing his life experiences and reflections on the struggle for freedom, Muntu Nxumalo has authored two books. In these writings, he expresses his disappointment at the ongoing challenge of achieving complete freedom for black people in South Africa.
