Holy cow. This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime speeches. His point how western democracies and future generations owe the Ukraine and Zelenskyy is just so well pointed out here. I’ll likely think of this speech for the rest of my life.

Am I the only one who is a bit freaked out by the background sound of plates and cutlery as people eat a meal while TS lists the atrocities of an ongoing genocide?!? As an event organiser myself I feel this is an unhappy combination to say the least.

I think it's disgusting that he is perpetuating this ridiculous notion that putin is the second coming of Hitler and that this is another genocide it's completely preposterous and frankly extremely dangerous. But of course a Jewish writer who is best friends with zelensky and makes his living talking is not biased at all

A prominent Ukrainian poet, Lina Kostenko, has written these two poems. I've translated these poems for the English-speaking friends of Ukraine some time ago. I thought of these poems again, for the occasion of the Independence Day in Ukraine 🇺🇲💛💙🇺🇦: *** We've fought and strived--- as our forebears. Yet freedom's alphabet we learn anew: unmeasurable loss has no measures, for ground zero fills the butchered view. Us warriors, the purposeful, the doers, the truest fighters for the sacred aim: one's own sovereignty--- the very truest of aims, we suffer so to attain. *** The death, the terror, the despair, The stench of horded killers-thieves ... A leering creature, grey and meager, Caused black and caustic senseless grieves. This beast, repulsive and distorted, Of evil breed, of Neva's cold... Look, Europe's nations, eyes averted: We are your future, foretold!

Can you please post the title and poem in Ukrainian? I lived there from April through September 2022. I had to return because I was injured during a russian artillery attack on my city, Mykolaiv. I'm healed up now. Lord willing, I can return in Jan 2023. Thank you so much. Слава Україно

As a citizen of a former colony that managed to eject the occupiers from most but not all of our territory, being aware of the horrendous experience of my fore-bearers and still to this way having to listen to the dismissal of our cultural identity by that coloniser, there is no doubt that Genocide is being committed by the Muscovites on the diverse peoples of Ukraine. Dignity is what makes us human. Resistance to assaults upon our personal and shared dignity ( self-determination) is existential. Slava Ukraini🇺🇦✊🏼🇮🇪 solidarity from Ireland.

Civil society is not a monolith. We won't speak of atrocities or genocides committed by people of Catholic faith in the past because current events have taken Catholicism off the hook for the time being and perhaps permanently. Because of what is going on today in Ukraine, I will find common cause with organizations of people I would not touch with a long stick in other circumstances.

Ukraine tries out the cutting edge weapons and the contemporary military strategies on behalf of all our free democratic world. Ukraine must be on the path to NATO. And in the meantime, ten times the air defenses help it is getting, long range weapons and the permission to strike targets in russia, including the decision making centers of genocidal ideology in the cursed kremlin. Thank you for your work. 🇺🇲🇺🇦🔱

Nobody in a sane mind supports attacking Russia, let alone the Kremlin, with long range missiles. Not Zelensky, nor Biden, nor Macron, Stoltenberg, Scholz, Sunak, ... absolutely nobody in the West or in NATO supports what you just asked for! You are just repeating russian fearmongering talking points, not facts. An exaggerated over-supporting of Ukraine at best, a perfidious way of russian propaganda at worst.

Yup, they could have behaved better. I tried to screen it out because his speech is priceless and I wanted to focus on that. I've been overwhelmed with gratitude for Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion, and it really helps to hear someone articulate it so well - some people in my life just don't get it, so I obviously need to try and express myself more clearly. 💙💛

10:21 ❤️ What would mean brave if there would not be danger involved? 11:34 11:50 it took many many generations, many many brave people's suffering and their battles facing powerful forces to overcome to achieve democracy and freedom. Even what we call *basic* human rights were never *basic* . It has been a hard win, bloody battle to achieve for humanity. These days entitlement is a given, a cushiony existence where most doesn't understand that freedom and democracy can be lost. Nothing is given, just because you were born into it. For a reminder, I like to bring up Cyrus the Great "The Cyrus Cylinder (Ostovane-ye-Kurosh) is an ancient clay cylinder on which is written a declaration in the name of Persia's Achaemenid king Cyrus the Great. The United Nations has declared the relic to be an "ancient declaration of human rights"." 21:38 ❤️ (Although I am not religious, I am spiritual. I believe that every culture, and its religion, has its history and rightful existence. UNTIL it doesn't commit crimes and inflict pain and suffering on others and their own citizens. Live and let live.)
