They're the best kept secret in the industry. While Gibson and Fender get most of the pub/attention, Gretsch to me are currently building as good, if not better quality instruments, especially in the mid to lower price ranges.

Yeah. I was floored when i started looking into their lineup. I just couldn't get excited about the look of many other hollow-body makes except for PRS, but I wanted a double-cutaway. And PRS is a price point above what I was willing to shell out right now ( but not never...) so went to my local shop and they had 4 Gretsch models hanging up. I kinda mosied (moseyed??) over, and... It was like a light going on. The fit and finish of their guitars is phenomenal. So i went home and played Devil's advocate. Almost nobody re-sells a Gretsch. That was my first clue I was into something. Then i returned to my local shop. The SECOND I picked one up and got it plugged in, I just knew. Now I am the proud owner of a 5622T Georgia Green. She should be here in a month or so

This is a great song! I bought a Gretsch G5655TG in Azure Blue, loved the way it played but I did find that the Bigsby tremolo did occasionally effect tuning in its stock form. For me the Broad'tron pickups lacked the jangly warmth that you normally encounter on Gretsch's more expensive guitars, so I installed a TV Jones classic Filter'tron in the neck position and a Power'tron Plus in the bridge position. It now has that ultra clean Gretsch sound for the neck pickup and a super gritty AC/DC sound on the bridge pickup. For the tuning stability issues, I added a penny under the tremolo spring, installed a true graphite nut, waxed the bridge saddles and installed locking tuners. So far that has fixed the tuning problems. It is now one of my favorite guitars!

First saw Tim on UK TV doing a mime along performance in 1983 of 'Souls' with Rick Springfield from Living in Oz which I then purchased on the strength of that appearance on a popular late afternoon show here in England, and became an instant Tim Pierce fan from that point, his lead solos on Souls made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Hey Tim, They are both beauties. I encourage anyone who has never touched a Gretsch to DO IT NOW. I am a beginner and am actually buying a G5422TG Walnut Stain right now, if it is discontinued I am getting a G6522T Georgia Green. I decided to treat myself to a Christmas gift. I had never even looked at Gretsch until 5 weeks ago and as soon as I played one I gave up looking elsewhere. I played a very similar model to the G5422TG and as soon as a note rang out I knew I had to have one of their guitars. I looked at the Nashville DC you played but it is out of my range right now. Tears for Fears hands down one of the most underrated bands of their era. huge hits but I never truly appreciated their sound until I started learning theory (you helped!). Hope you had a great Christmas, cheers from Halifax Canada. Love your videos.

This song and the album as a whole transports me back to my youth. One of my all time favourite albums that I played to death. Thanks for making this video. I’ve also been on a Gretsch kick for the past 2 years and now own 3 players edition (2 Duo Jets and a Broadkaster Jr), with my black duo jet now my main gigging guitar. I used to take a Les Paul and Tele to most gigs. Now I take a Gretsch instead of the LP and hardly ever put it down. The Gretsch just covers so much ground but I wouldn’t be playing one if it wasn’t for the players edition. Fender has done an amazing job making these classic guitars so much better. The necks are so consistent, are just the right size and shape, and they play so well it’s hard to believe it’s a Gretsch.

"That Great Gretsch Sound" is seriously no joke. They're way more versatile than they get credit for too. My 6136DC White Falcon is one of my favourite guitars. Sounds and plays incredible. They're some of the coolest looking guitars too. The Electromatics are insanely hard to beat in terms of tones, playability and build quality if you swap the stock pickups out for a set of TV Jones. I think the stock pickups are too weak and don't sound like "proper" filtertrons at all (I'm not into the 70's baldwin blacktop filtertrons they're modeled after). A pickup swap is a must, but they're incredible when they have that mod done.

An ad for the guitar popped up while I was browsing; I looked at the price (about $500) and thought "Looks really cool, but there's got to be something wrong with it if it's that inexpensive." Still, I moseyed on down to my local big box music store where they had some in stock. I couldn't believe how well it played and sounded, and the high level of workmanship. I wanted a different finish, so they had to have it shipped in. And to my great surprise and delight, it was beautifully set up right out of the box. It's been a delight.

Tim, thanks for the ever-contagious smile, brother. I recently inherited a 5420T in Fairlane Blue, and it has truly made a Gretsch-convert out of me. Reminds me (a little, anyway) of the Guild Starfire IV my dad used to play all of Chet Atkins' great stuff. I 2nd your Gretsch emotion

Great episode, Tim. I have a beautiful 2015 (last year before treble bleed and center block) Walnut and chrome Gretsch 5422 with Bigsby. I really like the thinner body and the nice weight. But those "Blacktop Filtertrons" (like on #2) really keep notes separated beautifully and chimey when mildly overdriven. Very sweet and organic. Thank you for sharing you talent with many of us who have been "guessing" for years how to play what we hear in our heads.

Tim, your videos are always good, but this one is evolutionary with the editing, the use of titles and pictures and music, it’s more of a music video than a KZbin video, well done.

Been playing Gretsch guitars for decades. I have three. Two different Anniversaries, and a DuoJet. One of most played guitars is one of my 2 Annies and my Duo jet is a mainstay in my recording studio....paired with my Hiwatt, or my Bassman, a total tone machine. Great video. Thanks and Happy Holidays...

Owner of more than a few Gretsch's myself, have to say I agree with you on the quality of the newer Electromatic 5420T's. Having a few 6120's, after a few simple mods it's hard to justify the extra huge cost of the Japanese counterparts. Did change the Tuners to Graphtech Ratio Locking tuners, Emerson Pots with Gavit wiring and TV Jones Classics, Upgraded the Bigsby to a BC3 (had it and a True Arc Bridge kicking around already). Thing is, picked itNew 5420T for $499 and probably have the same amount of dollars worth of upgrades into it. Even then it's a thrid the cost of a 6120T. Sure they are excellent Guitars, but something about the Electromatic makes me wanna pick it up and play, dollar for dollar, playability, tone are right there, and it puts a big smile on my face knowing it is that good, for a fraction of the cost.. Great show as always. No matter what level of player, it's the one channel can always pick up some great info. Thanks

I bought a Gretsch 5422 tg and it's become one of favorite guitars. The blacktop filtertrons on it were a bit low, but once I raised them a screw turn, the guitar just came alive.

Was at the Circa Museum store the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville and got to see the 1954 Chet Atkins special edition. $3,699, but well worth that cha-ching. The store carries the whole family, and so many of the others were in the $500 range that I was also blown away. No way to bring one home this weekend, but it's on my list for a followup.

I have a lot of guitars. I picked up an entry level Gretsch 2420t this year. Now I have a lot of lonely guitars. This thing quickly became my main to practice with. I had no idea just how versatile the Gretsch guitars really are. The 2420t did come with a few fixable issues (buzz buzz buzz, and fret sprout) but they were relatively easy to remedy.

I put a roller bridge on my Gretsch 2420T and I don’t care fore it- the strings pop off the rollers if you play a little aggressively - you really have to play carefully. Going to change it back. Anyone else run into this problem?

Thanks for these demos! I purchased a Streamliner version of the hollow body without the Bigsby for $450, which was only okay until I replaced the bridge with a Tone Pro and replaced the tuners with Grover locking Rotomatics and now the instrument feels more like it’s worth $1,000. The body and neck were already solid but the difference from the upgrades has really been amazing!

The affordable Gretsch 5420T is actually the favorite of gigging rockabilly guys. I've owned a bunch of the "professional" $3K made in Japan Gretsch models and always sell them. The 5420 is a keeper due to the right down the middle sound and modern neck and playable features.

Hey Tim, Tears for Fears is an iconic band, their music and in particular this song is iconic, the Gretsch guitars are also iconic (lately Gretsch did a very excellent job on improving their instruments) and if all of it comes together performed and played by one of my top 10 favorite guitarist "Tim Pierce", Christmas time couldn't be much better for me then. Thanks a lot for sharing. Love it. Great entertainment! Cheers DimiZ

Lol at the text painting when you showed/sowed the fields of sunflowers as you switched to the major 7th chords. Best demo of how to use a Gretsch, what makes it different, and why you might want to own one that I've seen because of your unexpected use of the Tears for Fears song. I'm not interested in or capable of sounding like Chet Atkins or Brian Setzer but that's who I associate with Gretsch so I never really knew what I'd do with a Gretsch if I had one. This quick vid was a revelation. Both guitars sounded spectacular. Btw, great song but I prefer their debut track Suffer the Children, if only because it was one of my 2 favorite songs to dance to at my favorite dance club back then (the other being Enola Gay). Hard to believe it's been 40 years.
