I know a guy that's a great jazz player that's appeared on a lot of jazz recordings and sessions as well as a session player on a lot of pop records and few tours. For the first ten years of his 'professional' career he just used a stock 90s Epiphone Sheraton on everything and some junky thing as a backup. No one cared. No one said, ''Why aren't you playing a top-shelf Gibson?' High end guitars are beautiful works of art and there's a romance to owning a great US model. But audiences and clients couldn't care less.

@@jerbear7952 If you've ever seen a show there, it's barely larger than a living room. The stage is small and the audience is right there. Larry was stage right, next to a row of seats behind a bench table where I sat. And his model guitar by Sire is really well-built.

I agree Tim. My ES335 was about $3500. I build guitars in a small shop at home. From what I can tell, the Gibson and Sire are built the same way. 3 layer, cross grain pressed top and back with a center block. The wood on the Gibson, and maybe part of the process is what results in the lighter weight. Sire does an excellent job on the neck and frets!! For about $400 you could change the pups, wiring, pots, switch and jack. That would make it very hard to tell the difference in a blind test! This is the first off shore guitar I've ever said this about! Peace.. --gary

While extremely close, I could pick the Gibson blindfolded anytime, it has a kind of airiness and compression that the Sire doesn't match with the current configuration. What pickups and electronics in your opinion (Gibson '57 with 50s wiring, orange drops etc. ) should achieve that, or is it also a matter of wood/construction difference?

As a lifelong Gibson 355 player... I was curious to see this guitar comparison... which was an excellent presentation. However I was far more impressed by Tim's guitar playing and brilliant execution of every tune he played. Steely Dan is extremely advanced and complex music to cut on guitar...and Tim landed it note-for note... perfectly executed! BRAVO! I lost interest in which guitar you were playing and became entranced in your playing. Honestly if I were blindfolded I could not tell the difference between guitars. Both instruments sounded great...but the player is what impressed me most!

355 or 335? Both are great guitars, but I know how many times I've "fat-fingered" 355 for some reason. Fun fact, guys like Larry Carlton and Skunk Baxter often made their own leads, and auditioned with them to get the gig. Baxter's "Peg" solo is a great example. Aaaaand... I bet you already know that 🤷‍♂🙂

@@MattyK-USA Hi Matty... Yes 355 is correct. At one time in the 1960's it was Gibson's "Top of the line" semi-hollowbody as shown in their catalog. Mine was a 1966 Cherry Red with the Stereo Varitone and Bigsby tailpiece option. I traded my 345 and $500 for it back in the late 60's when I saw it hanging up (used) at Alex's Music Store on 48th St. in New York City. I had that 355 from the late 60's until around 2012. I loved that 355 but when I began studying Jazz the neck at the nut was too thin (under 1 11/16") so I switched over to a 1988 Natural Finish Gibson L4 that I loved. For the record I owned • Sears Silvertone Guitar (amp in the case) balck with sparkle • 60"s Fender Mustang (daphne blue) • Gibson 330 (Cherry Red) • Gibson Goldtop Les Paul • Gibson 340 (Cherry Red) • Gibson 345 (Cherry Red) • Gibson 355 (Cherry Red) • 1988 Gibson L4 (Natural) and a back-up Gibson 2010 L4 (Sunburst), Except for the L4... I never owned more than one guitar at a time.

I have to admit Don’t Take Me Alive has always blown my mind from the tone to feel and the charismatic construction of the guitar parts it’s a masterpiece. As an owner of 3 Sire basses, I fully endorse these guys. They're so nice to play. I had bought them with the intention of swapping out the pickups and electronics (because, ya know, cheap). After playing and opening up the covers, I realized I didn't need to. Really enjoyed hearing it from a guitarists perspective as well!

Yes its amazing how good the lower end guitars are these days (compared to when I first started playing). You can still find a few dogs in the batch but most sellers have free return policies if you don't like them. The biggest thing with the lower priced guitars is having to do the setups and adjustments yourself. Thats one way they tend to cut the pricing too (which isn't an issue if you've built up your tool collection).

The H7 was such a nice surprise, particularly when I ran it thru Fender amps, it was sooo worth the almost year long wait (I ordered it during COVID) I ended up using it for the lions share of the leads on my last album "Highway Cruiser". Larry Carlton was always a hero to me and this was a must try guitar, so I am glad (at least in this) I was patient!

I also own custom shop Gibson guitars, and the quality of the Sire guitars is extraordinary for the price . I have the H7. The first one had a fingerboard that separated t the first fret. Sire exchanged at their expense and no questions asked. The replacement is awesome, but the chrome plating failed on the bridge p/up cover, but it is so subtle I didn't bother complaining. It it's awesome in every other way.

Incredible playing as always, Tim! I got an H7 in cherry sunburst 1 year ago and it’s been my favorite non PRS in my arsenal. I’ve never bonded with a real 335 for whatever reason, but the pickups and feel are perfect to me. More than anything, the fact that Larry now plays an H7 in live settings over his famous vintage 335 says volumes about his confidence in their quality and adherence to his high standards.

The guitars are pretty close in tone with the Gibson being smoother and the Sire is noticably brighter in the treble region but not harsh,to me it's enough to cut through. Excellent playing and video 👍🎸

The H7 is great. Had to do a set up and fret dress but that is normal for a lower price instrument. Very well put together and pickups are awesome. Neck feels great. Very much like a late 60s 335. I lucked out and got a fairly light one at 8.2 lbs. which is not too bad for 335. Lighter than my Les Paul. All in all a keeper.

I couldn't find any flaws with them, except that maybe the pickups were a bit bright. But that's just preference, a lot of people like that more than the vintage thud that I prefer.

The Ibanez AS series scratches the same 335-style itch and is also very well made. I would urge anyone watching this to check them out along with the Sire before deciding. Both are very good values. Great playing as always. The Gibson does sound sweeter, but the Sire is not bad. I have owned a 1967 Gibson 335 which was just too heavy for me. I replaced it with a EART E-335 which is about 3/4 the weight and the sound and setup on these inexpensive 335 models is exceptional. Time for another shootout for 335 models maybe. EART make great guitars. I own the Sire T7 telecaster with two point tremolo and humbuckers, a great guitar with super neck setup. Thanks for your review. Dave.

When you solo on Don‘t take me Alive, it sounds 100% like Larry played it. I got to see Larry Carlton live in NYC in the 90‘s. Mark O‘Connor came in as well to listen. His playing was perfect and i stayed for the second show as well. So when you got to see Larry showing up to play that show with Steely Dan you must have been equally excited as i was back then. I used to collect vintage guitars. These cheap guitars today are amazing! I just got an Xaviere 335 type guitar for about $350 (!) which sounds and plays terrific! I don’t know how they do it. If money is no object, of course the Gibson 335 is better, but for the money, these cheap guitars are just incredible. Thanks for the comparison!

Yes! The Rockets! I saw them in Birmingham, Alabama and they rocked!!! They blew the roof off the arena when they did "Oh Well", but the real killer was an amazing cover of The Beatles "Dear Prudence", after all these years I still remember how AMAZING it was!!!!

@@michaelleary8694 Saw them warming up Bob Seger (Against the Wind). Had third row, center seats. I didn't buy a Bob Seger shirt, I got a Rockets shirt! Great show and back then, as little as I knew of the Beatles (I was 16), I recall that too. The didn't get much traction for as good as there were.

Thanks Tim! The Sire sounds really good! After all it's all in the player's hands...My first 335 style guitar was a used late 70's Yamaha SA-2000 that I paid $450. A couple of years ago I bought a used Gibson ES-333 for $1,000. I upgraded the pickups and now that guitar is amazing!

My son has my 1999 Gibson 335 with a beautiful flame top. He is beginning his final year in grad school in Jazz Guitar Performance. It blessed my soul to see him play Spiral on it in his recent recital. Having said that I missed my 335 and purchased an H7. I love the sounds, look, and feel of the H7. It covers all the bases I was missing. Thanks for your great review and the chills you gave me hearing Don’t Take Me Alive! I hope I win the H7. I will give it to my son and get my Gibson back!

I was able to see Steely Dan live well many moons ago. You could literally have dropped the needle on the album and would not have been able to tell the difference in their playing. They were just that good live. One of my favorite concerts I went to.

I saw them last year. Obviously Walter is gone but it was an amazing show. I think they had 5 guitarists, all great.

The first time I saw them Walter called out because he went to the hospital the night before. A few days later he passed away 😭 Sad he didn’t make it but Larry Carlton took his spot and of course he sounded amazing

I bought this guitar for my son in the faded red top. The flamed top is really nice are the rounded shoulders on the neck, very nice tone through a peavey classic 30. Great review!

I agree with your summary, Tim. Sire definitively does the semi hollow thing with its own nice character, punching above its price point. The Gibson had more nuance and wood tone warmth.

There are so many affordable guitars these days that really blow me away quality wise for the money but in his day Eric Clapton could make a Squire sound like a $10,000 guitar if you catch my drift. If I were in a room with these two and had the choice of which one to play I'm playing the Gibson. I'm not spending $7,000 on one just because Bonamassa's name is on it but I'd be okay with dropping around $3k on one in the used market. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with the $700 guitar but resale value and quality differences that I've grown accustomed to would make me save for the Gibson.

Completely agree...and I have had an es-175 for 40 years. My Epiphone 335 IBG is every bit as nice as my Gibson, although very different. I can't put it down...

Excellent review Tim! I totally agree with your findings. I have had my eye on these guitars since they first were introduced. Although I own a few high-dollar guitars I decided a few years ago I'd never spend over $1000 on a new guitar again. The craftsmanship and quality on guitars under $1000 these days are superior to those back in the 50's, 60's, 70's.

I own the Sire H7V, essentially the H7 with P90s. I also own a Sire T7 butterscotch. They both play wonderfully, have impeccable fit and finish. I got both from Sweetwater and they showed up in perfect condition, impeccably set up. You can't go wrong with either Sires or Sweetwater.

It's amazing what's available today at reasonable prices. I love my older guitars (going back to 1964, older on my ma dos and banjos) but my 2010 Guilds are right there as a working musician. Good luck to all on the contest!

I bought a Schecter C-1 Platinum a few years back for around $650 new. Price has gone up some since then. Much like the cheaper version you are playing the C-1 is drop dead gorgeous and quality of build is top notch. It has Schecter pickups and tuners and made in the Philippines. It plays, looks and sounds like guitars 3x the price. It's an incredible time to be a buyer. Such good quality and innovation out there

Hi Tim. I tried the Sire H7 and a Tokai a few months back but ended up taking a punt on a Stanford CR thinline 35. It's the Chinese built 335 line from the people who make Maybach guitars in Germany. The Sire and Tokai were great, but this Stanford is even better. Super comfortable neck, excellent finsh (and it's nitro!) and whoever wound the pickups is a down right magician. Well worth a look if you ever get the chance.
