So beautiful, I just love his voice. I never heard this song until I went to see Ellis Island (which is the Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears) where my Irish grandparents came into America. I am from New York State, a tiny dairy farming village which looks like Ireland in the summer. Growing up, I never even thought of going to NY City, because it was a couple hundred miles from my home. As a teenager I went there to the East Village of Manhattan to hang out with Hippies and Beatniks. A classmate told me I should go, because he had such a great time there. I had no Guidebook, no map, not a savvy traveler. This was 1968. Then I ran away from home to live in San Francisco. In the 80s I saw a PBS documentary of the restoration of the Statue of Liberty. I decided immediately that one day I would visit NY City again and see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Well I took my youngest child (he was about 20 at the time) and there I got a book with great photos of the Statue and the Island. The Ferry goes all day to both sights and you can stay as long as you like. I recommend the audio tape. It was a mind blowing experience, that first time, and just as beautiful the second. So great sharing it with my son. I also have 2 daughters who I hope will take the trip sometime. There are Hostels there for budget travelers like me. I've been to Ireland 7 times, and plan to go again when this awful pandemic ends. If it does not end, at least we can get vaccinated to be safer. Best Wishes to all fans of Irish music.

A British comedian made a drunken bet with a friend in a Pub in England. He was challenged to hitch-hike around the perimeter of Ireland hauling a small refrigerator, within in a 30 day time frame. Read the book to find out why and who won! Tory Island was one of the places he had to visit. I have been to Northern Ireland, but did not go to Tory Island; I went to Cape Clear Island in County Cork for two nights. The weather was good, and I hiked around. The Hostel is an old Coast Guard Station. The sea was calm, so I did not get sea sick. Bring warm clothes if you go. One tiny Cafe and a tiny food market both in the same building. Two Pubs, one closed (for sale) lovely area. The book is "Round Ireland With a Fridge" by Tony Hawkes.

Here we are in March of 2020 and how true is this song in the time of a pandemic both here and our home, Mother Ireland bring us through this in our fear and tears in our new found land the USA make us strong like Annie and her siblings were and also the Austrian man who stepped aside to let them come in first. Whether you were chosen from the Western area of Europe or the restricted 26 we built America then and now.

Best version. However, the man was German and barged past Annie to the front of the queue but the customs officer told him "stand back! Ladies first". She was actually 17 not 15 and her parents were in New York for 3 years before sending for their other 3 children. Annie married a man of German parents who patented Macaroon sweets. Half of Annie's 11 children died sadly and she died aged 50, morbidly obese of heart failure in Manhattan. The statues in Cobh and Ellis Island are of the wrong Annie Moore who was killed by a car in Texas.

Thankyou, USA, for taking in and looking out for the siblings of my ancestors, Howleys, Cannys, Riordans, Ryans, Streitches, Hacketts, Kellys who left Ireland in the 1850s and made their way to the other side of the World. 93 % of emigrees, fleeing death, went to the North Americas. In more recent years, we've re united with some. God Bless America. Let nobody of Irish ancestry speak ill of that most generous of nations.

Not so. The younger people in their teens and 20s are gone crazy for this music. Visit any music pub or music venue in Ireland and you wouldn't believe the enthusiasm for this music. And they sing along with such gusto. Far from forgotten by the younger comer-ups.

Annie later married a bakery clerk, and had 11 children, only five of whom survived to adulthood. She died of heart failure in 1924 at 47 years old, and was buried with six of her children in an unmarked plot at Calvary Cemetery in Queens. “She had the typical hardscrabble immigrant life,” Smolenyak said.
