Le Train Rouge (The Red Train) runs between Rivesaltes in Roussillon and Axat in Southern Aude, following the Agly and Maury rivers the train passes through a varied and interesting landscape starting in a wide fertile valley with vineyards covering the lower regions before the valley narrows and the vines give way to the dramatic scenery of Corbières Massif and the forests of the upper valley.
In 1878 “La Compagnie des chemins de fer du Midi et du Canal latéral à la Garonne” began building a railway line in the Eastern Pyrénées to connect Carcassonne with Perpignan. The route used by today’s “Le Train Rouge” was complete in 1904. As with many lines built in lightly populated areas, it fell victim to improved road transport, eventually falling into disuse in the late 1980’s.
In 1992 three railway enthusiasts formed an association to resurrect a train service along the route, by 2001 they had succeeded raising sufficient funds, volunteers and rolling stock to run a train service. TPCF - Train du Pays Cathare et du Fenouillèdes (Fenouillèdes is the Catalan name for this region) run today's train service, the friendly staff and volunteers would love to welcome you aboard one of their trains, but if you can't make it please sit back and enjoy a virtual ride through the beautiful French/Catalonian Countryside.

Hello Peter, nice to hear from you. This was filmed on a trip with Rail Discoveries to Northern Spain. Karen came along too, because the hotel was near the beach and she likes a bit of sunshine. All in all it was a very good trip. I'm glad you enjoyed it, I've just been shopping for some winter clothes because I'm off to Eastern Germany next week to film steam trains in the snow. I guess it's nice and warm in your neck of the woods. All the best from Tim and Karen.

Thank you Jim, 2022 was a reasonably good year for me, on the work front it was a very difficult year, I develop new products and there was almost nothing new in the pipeline at a time when many companies were in survival mode, but on a brighter note we came out of lock down, my first two trips were successful and the weather both home and abroad was very good. In the middle of this month I'm setting off to Eastern Germany to spend two weeks filming steam in the snow. I'm officially a pensioner now, although I have no plans to stop working for a few more years, I'm looking forward to 2023. Happy New Year from Tim and Karen 🍾🍺🥂🙂.

Sixty six sounded so old when I was a youngster, now I realise that life begins at sixty six. @@Timsvideochannel1 Neverjetno! 1960? V Sloveniji imamo upokojenci javni prevoz zastonj.

Brings back memories of backpacking the area. For nerd points, Maury makes a great base to explore the foothills of the Pyrenees, while to the north, one has the Cathars castles (think 'Da Vinci code'), and places like the Gorge de Galamus. (Just watch out for the wild boar!) The vineyards seen along the trackside produce Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan reds, and the white grape Muscat. The area is famed for 'Vin du Natural' fortified wines that can age almost forever. (I recently drank one produced in 1927!) Nevertheless, a beautifully made video. Thank you!

I did visit the Yellow Train, a fascinating train and route, but unfortunately the train was overcrowded and staffed by the least helpful people I have ever encountered on a tourist railway. There is a reason Rail Discoveries have dropped it from their holiday itinerary. Doesn't that clicking sound drive you nuts ?

It is a bit annoying, I guess the best thing is to turn the sound down, although the driver doesn't have that option.

@@tawharanui5011 Hi, a number of people have asked what the clicking sound is. I looked on the internet and this is the best answer I could find. Please click on the link, an English translation is available by clicking on the "English Translation" tab - fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flaman

@@Timsvideochannel1 I think you may be right. The ticking of the constant speed paper spool. I did turn down the sound eventually and put on some good music. And enjoyed it while jotting down idea's for a project me and my son are working on together. Great scenery on this one.

@@wishusknight3009 Hi, I'm intrigued to know more about your project, is it a model railway? in which case Part 3, due out at the end of the month could be just what you looking for, stunning mountain scenery and pretty French towns. That clicking sound has been responsible for a good number of comments on this video, mostly asking about the source of the noise.

They could be doing a better job at keeping “rail-bed” off vegetation.

This is a long railway line, managed by a small group of volunteers on a limited budget. They are doing their very best and I'm sure they'd welcome new members to help their existing volunteer team in running and maintaining the railway.
