The coolest thing about this preservation line is that it is no zombie; I actually used it to go somewhere. Visited "The Village" a Km walk from Minffordd and connected with BR at the end of the line. Take note USA, The Britts can still out railway us.

IT'S THE SOUND!! Turn up the amps and sit back and listen to the sound. Having the camera with it's built in mike attached up front was great. The sound of that engine as it travel along is mesmerizing. I had the pleasure of travelling on this railway about fifth years ago. Nothing has changed, a lovely memory. I made the round trip from the Blaenau Ffestiniog end back in the early 1970's a trip to remember.

Hello Richard, like you I love to hear the sound of a locomotive working had. This railway has matured into one of the best known tourist attractions in Wales, it's a real credit to the folk who bought it back to life all those years ago and to the staff and volunteers who keep it running today, plus there is now the added bonus of being able to catch a train to Caernarfon from Porthmadog Harbour station. I'm glad the video bought back good memories from your own time on the railway.

I have been on this train pre covid with my late beautiful mum and my late beautiful dog . We had a Welsh afternoon tea ( they don’t do them now ) which was so delicious including my favourite bara brith ( sorry if I have spelt in wrong ) . I loved every minute of the journey . Very special memories. I stay in Borth Y Gest twice a year and have walked the path next to the train with the stunning views . Last year I went on the train up to Bedgellert. ❤❤. We are so lucky to be able to travel on this spectacular steam trains . Thanks to all the phenomenal volunteers. I am back in Borth Y Gest on September 9th for 2 weeks , every moment there is absolute heaven . ❤

Hello, I'm sorry to hear that your mum and dog have passed on, but from what you write you have wonderful memories of them. Pre Covid I took my wife on both the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways, travelling in the observation Pullman carriage at the back of the train, the cream tea was the icing on the cake, it's hard to think of a better way to spend an hour of two. The view from the houses along the water front at Borth Y Gest is stunning and the footpath along the coast to Porthmadog is one of my favourite walks. The railways of Porthmadog make it a very special place, even the British Rail service along the coast is spectacular and the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway is well worth visiting. It's amazing to think that without the volunteers freely giving up their spare time, Porthmadog wouldn't be the vibrant place it is today. I bet the 9th of September can't come quick enough. Thank you for sharing your story 😊.

Lovely, lovely, lovely. Beautiful countryside views. Last time I did it was as a kid in the early 1960s, when the line terminated less than half way up. The countryside looks a lot greener than I remember it then. Must go and do it again.

Hi, when I first travelled along this railway, it finished in the middle of nowhere, today it's a very different story, it goes somewhere and can be used as part of a through journey to stations on the Conwy Valley line and beyond.

I made this exact journey back in late September 2012. It was a beautifully clear Autumn afternoon, I remember the scenery being absolutely stunning, and what a privilege to be transported by a real piece of history, truly a brave little engine! Hello John, I'm glad you enjoyed the video, the forward view gives a better idea of how tight the clearances are. Did you do the complete trip in the 80's? If you get a chance to return, it's worth travelling in the observation carriage at the rear of the train, the views back down the valley are stunning, especially at sunset on an autumn day. Just found this video wow fantastic I did this trip May 2023. The poor coal man started off pure white when we got to FFestiniog he was unrecognisable to put it words it is ok to say he was the same colour of the coal. The scenery beautiful the train chugging along the whoo whoo every thing brill about your great video thanks. I got the coal man & the driver a cool fresh orange juice & a chocolate croissant each to help keep their energy levels up for our return trip. I say every body must have a trip on the Porthmadog line it truly is an excellent day out. We will be back this month September to do the other routes from Porthmadog & can't wait. Thanks Tim & Porthmadog station staff also the cafe is really great.

Hi Helen, I enjoyed reading your account of the trip you made on the Ffestiniog Railway, I'm sure the fireman and driver appreciated the refreshments you provided. I always look forward to visiting Wales to ride this train, it is one of my favourite heritage railways along with the Welsh Highland Railway, the volunteers and staff are so welcoming and friendly. I think you'll really enjoy riding the Welsh Highland Railway, especially the Aberglaslyn Gorge. I like to start my day at Porthmadog with a coffee and a bite to eat whilst watching the trains being prepared for day ahead.

At last I’ve been on a journey on this World renowned railway👍👏 I found out about this railway when I joined my local Model Engineer club in the early ‘70s in Johannesburg. Ran my own 5” gauge 0-6-0 at the club hauling passengers every Sunday. That moment I steamed it up for the first time, opened the regulator and felt what ‘small’ 1” pistons could pull thrilled me! The smell of smoke, seam and oil mixture got into my blood stream, activated a dormant gene and I was hooked. So hooked was I,that I started my own Model Engineering shop supplying all the needs to build locomotives , traction engines & IC engines. When I told my parents of my plan my Mom’s eyes went wide and she told me that her father worked for the LMS, something never mentioned before. That gene awoke with a vengeance and an experience never to be forgotten and treasured.

Hi, that's a lovely tale, one I concur with. I am a toolmaker and as part of my apprenticeship I made a simple "O" gauge steam locomotive, I was also a member of my local model engineering club where I got to drive a 10 ¼ inch gauge 4-4-0 steam locomotive that once ran along Bognor Regis Pier. One of my father's relatives was station master at Appleby station on the Settle to Carlisle railway, another worked on the abandoned APT project, railways are a part of my genetic makeup. I'm glad you enjoyed your virtual ride the world's first narrow gauge heritage railway, who would have guessed at the time this railway made history that so many would follow suit, the UK is a awesome destination for lovers of all things steam.

Over 30 years ago is enough to cause the best of memories to fade. One thing hasn't changed, Wales is still awesome and now trains leave Porthmadog in opposite directions with the opening of the Welsh Highland Railway. If you do visit again, I think you'll find it an enjoyable experience.

Thanks for posting this! I got to ride this very line 2 months ago during my trip to Wales. It's neat to see it out the front this time. I remember the conductor on-board mentioning and showing that there is a cabin you can rent that runs alongside the track and the only way to access the cabin is by riding this line (no road).

Hi Phil, I hope you enjoyed your visit the Wales, not quite the Rockies, but never the less dramatic in its own way with the added bonus of a fascinating history, the reason there are so many narrow gauge railways there. The driver gets the best view !!! I think the holiday cottage you mentioned is Coed y Bleiddiau, a couple of passengers flagged the train down in this video.

@@Timsvideochannel1 The thing I loved about Wales was all the passenger rail and narrow gauge infrastructure. In the Rockies there's really not much rail transport infrastructure to get around, you pretty much need a private car. As it is in most of Western Canada.

I caught the Canadian across Canada in Mid Winter, it was an amazing experience. Canada is a big place, not really suited to Welsh style narrow gauge railways. Did Canada once have more railways, my knowledge of Canadian railway history leaves a lot to be desired.

@@Timsvideochannel1 Yes we used have a lot more passenger rail pre 1980s. Both the Canadian Pacific Railway and Canadian National Railway ran passenger services back then. In the late 70s a new government owned Crown corporation called 'Via Rail' operates the remaining passenger lines. There's only a few services running but there are always talks about 2 possible corridors for high-speed service in the future; the Windsor-Quebec City corridor in the east, and the Calgary-Edmonton corridor in the west.

@@TransCanadaPhil It's a pity so many passenger trains have been cut from the timetable. I did see one train I'd love to travel on, it was waiting at Jasper one January day, it consisted of a diesel locomotive a dome car and a beaver tailed dome car. I later discovered that it ran to Prince Rupert, I would dearly love to travel on that train one day. Canada would suit high speed rail, but it will have to go some to compete with air travel, big cities several hundred miles apart are best served by high-speed trains because they can run right into the centre, rather than serving an airport on the outskirts.

An excellent video to follow on from the one posted a year or so ago going in the opposite direction from Blaenau. This time travelling from Porthmadog on the upward gradient most of the way though, there is the added bonus of the noise of the engine working hard to pull the train up the hill. Last time it only had to coast back down. Shame about the rain towards the end obscuring the camera's view but then I suppose it is North Wales

You are probably correct, the reason I use the term 'Driver's Eye' is to indicate that it is a forward view, also the KZbin algorithm picks up on 'Driver's Eye View' whereas it ignores 'Forward View'. I'm glad you enjoyed the video 😊.

Fun fact, Minffordd has one of only 2 vertical level crossings in the entire UK, along Quarry Road. The other vertical is at Marshbrook level crossing. Edit: I stand corrected. Multiple other vertically arranged level crossings are located in the Isle of Man area.

I hope you enjoyed your trip as much as I enjoyed mine. I looked on the internet for an explanation for right hand running without success. The gravity trains required a free run through the stations and loops, it could be that it was easier to create a better alignment on the right, generally on the up hill side or it could simply be that as it was so early on the scene there was no precedent at the time.

Beautifully filmed travelogue with impressive speeds notched up, especially uphill! I guess construction of the reservoir drowned the course of the old line into Blaenau - but I'm interested to know where exactly the present line reverts to its original route. The start of the deviation is pretty clear - at 49'15. Does it rejoin at 53'10, or further along than that..?

Glad you enjoyed it. It was filmed with a GoPro 11 and I've just taken delivery of my new GoPro 12. On the day the light was very difficult, I don't know of a suitable camera that can cope with bright cloudy skies, rain and dark shadows at the same time. The better the lighting conditions, the better the footage.

I think I have been able to figure it out for myself from the whistle tone - David Lloyd George. Great video, I have watched up to Tan y Bwlch so far where there is plaque in memory of my Dad in the memorial garden by the water tower. The sound is awesome, usually on such videos when there is a loud sound like the whistle, the auto-sound cushioning kicks in and everything goes quiet for a while, but not on this. I will watch from Tan y Bwlch to Blaenau Ffestiniog tomorrow.

@@Timsvideochannel1 ganz herzlichen dank...habe die übersetzung gefunden... hat es eigentlich auch eisenbahnen mit stehenden zylindern gegeben ? bei den darstellungen sieht man die zylinder immer waagerecht...einige dampfschiffe auf dem vierwaldstätter-see (schweiz) wurden auf ölbrenner umgerüstet, um die russentfaltung/ verqualmung der umgebung zu vermindern....noch heute fahren diese schiffe und es ist intressant, wie der antrieb funktioniert...

Hello Robert, 'Forbes Gauge' might find its way into Wikipedia as the infinately variable narrow gauge. The Ffestiniog Railway, like the Severn Valley and Bluebell Railway were part of my childhood, my parents would take the family to see them whenever we were nearby, sometimes we'd even get to ride them if family finances allowed. Those early visits to railways were the spark that made filming railways my life long hobby. I find it fascinating to see my old photos showing my kids when they were knee high to a grasshopper tagging along behind a hippie in shorts (Me) at various heritage lines when the rules were lax and it was easy to get up close to the engines in the depot. Happy Days. One of the Blaenau slate quarries reopened after the 1987 hurricane that swept through Britain leaving many houses without a roof, I think the quarry is still in operation today. I'll be backing England in the cup, I'm working today, so I'll be watching the highlights tonight although I will have the radio on at work. Cheers. Tim.
