With leaves falling along with light rain we set off with No.9351 and its six carriages along the sinuous, steeply graded single track railway towards Minehead. Such conditions required the locomotive crew to be on top of their game, not once did their engine slip, a real testament to both the crew and the locomotive. The sound of the locomotive working hard as the exhaust beat echoed off the hills made this a trip to remember, along with the autumn colours, moody skies and a locomotive in GWR colours the scene was complete.
Our locomotive started life in 1934 as a 5101 class 2-6-2T tank engine numbered 9351, it became a 2-6-0 tender engine numbered 5193 after preservation. For more information, please click on this link - www.west-somer...
The railway is a standard gauge line, (1,435 mm - 4 ft 8 1⁄2 in) located in the South, West of England, easily accessible by car or by bus from Taunton BR station served by regular GWR trains from London and the West Country and CrossCountry trains services from the North and Midlands.
