So how do you do this when you are using a rope that you can't unravel into strands.... Every video I have found uses a rope with twisted strands.

Only if you tie it with a certain knot so that the lead is central under the jaw, I knot my farrier once showed me, which I promptly forgot and am now trawling KZbin searching for it!
