I have just binge-watched the first part of the stick welding course. Great pace - excellent value and an efficient use of time, with no padding Highly recommended. Amazon delivery driver can't come quick enough for me now, so I can get cracking on my classic car chassis (after running the suggested exercises first).

Re starting a 7018 is my nemesis at the moment. I have two inverter machines, one is a small 160amp basic stick welder with just amperage control. The other is a multi process mig, tig MMA. It has arc force and any easy start function and does seem to weld 7018 better and it also has settings preset and you can choose 60xx or 70xx. I do like the small welder as it's so convenient to move around but I do struggle

I am getting back into this as a hobby and putzing around. I have a new 160amp inverter 110/220 welder and I am wondering which welding tods do I need to have laying around for playing with steel...? What are the types of welding rods I should keep... I know, not the best probably I have some 1/16 6013... I think I need some 3/32 of the same... But what else for a beginner...? I am thinking just two or three types as a max... I also have a 30yo Century ac/dc welder that I am afraid to even turn on...

I know Jack about welding but your videos along with the Essential Craftsman are big motivation to get welding. My first project might be a rebar trellis. Any suggestions on that and what I should be doing/buying are very welcomed.
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 3 жыл бұрын
Cool! For a trellis like that, you really only need a welder, angle grinder, cutoff wheels, a welding helmet, jacket and welding gloves. As far as the welder goes, pretty much any process will work for that project, so I'd think about future projects and what kind of welder you want. The 3 types I'd research are Stick, MIG and Flux Core. I have videos about each of them on the channel that will show you all the basics. Stick welding will be the hardest to learn of those 3, but is also the cheapest. Once you get the gear, I'd just start by making welds on some scrap metal.

I'm trying to burn them to the numbers, but if they're longer and I'm starting a new weld I save them for times when I've run the electrode to the numbers and have just a little bit more to go.

Great video as usual! Interesting that you found the Hobart not typical. I bought my first box of rods ever, a 5 pound box of Hobart 3/32 6013, from CyberWeld along with my hood about a month ago, thinking they'd be a good name brand to go with. I have no experience to compare them with obviously. Any lack of slag peel right now is definitely my fault though 😉
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The rods run really well and I’m sure the weld is sound. The slag is just different than other brands, but it chips off easily enough. Maybe I’ll compare a couple different brands in a future video.

the dimensions of the work piece determine how often you will stop burning your rod. if your running a 10 ft bead..no problem...a 6 inch one?...unless you want to throw away lots of rods you will need to know how start up with "old" rods a lot

When learning to stick weld how many rods do you think a beginner needs to burn through before getting to the point of being able to weld half decent?
@b.p.rwebber8098
@b.p.rwebber8098 3 жыл бұрын
Just keep going til you get a decent weld mate, might be 1 kilo of rods might be 20. They're cheap enough.

Hi Tim! Where should a brand new welder prioritize learning restarts? I have yet to run my first beads, but will be doing so in a few days (gotta get my 240 sorted a few more pieces of gear first). Obviously my first goal will be learning to strike and arc, then running beads... what then?
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 3 жыл бұрын
Awesome! You're going to have a blast! I'd start with running beads focusing first on arc length, then on rod angle and finally on travel speed. Once the beads look good, I'd weld a few joints together. Next comes welding joints in different positions. After that, restarts.

I find this concept of going back a bit confusing; I'm learning, early days, with 6013s and in my mind if I head back to the stop position I'll be pushing slag back into my weld. Am I over-analysing this?
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 2 ай бұрын
It's a great question. The point of starting ahead is twofold. First, you cover your arc strike mark so that you don't have an ugly stress riser on your existing weld. Second, it allows the rod to heat up and the flux to activate so that you don't get a cold start or porosity. The key is to move into position quickly enough that you don't deposit any appreciable amount of weld and the little bit that's there will float out when you run over it. You're right, though, you do have to be mindful of the slag and 6013 is the most difficult for that.

QUESTION: Is this applicable the other different rods as well or it is only applicable to the 7018 rods?
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. The concept of striking an arc ahead of where you stopped and moving back into the crater applies across the board. Each rod runs a little different, for example, 6010/6011 usually needs a little rod manipulation, so with those rods, you would need to get back into the same routine right after you fill the crater.

it is impossible, but, moving in small wave at start you can, this is rly hard, your way is the right way.

when you restart strike downstream from your stop point, then travel upstream to your stop point, then continue welding downstream again (without deslagging), aren’t you trapping some slag?
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 6 ай бұрын
The slag needs to be removed at the end of the previous bead. When restarting ahead, it’s a relatively quick and short motion back to the end of the previous bead and very little if any material is deposited. I’m not aware of another way to do it that doesn’t leave an exposed arc strike and risk porosity.
@ebogar42
@ebogar42 2 жыл бұрын
Why do I keep getting porosity on restarts? I feather my ends out and start about a half inch in front of the weld. I come back and pause for a second where the feathered out part of the weld starts and always get small clumps of porosity and grinding that back out. Sometimes chase it for ever it seems before I don't get it. The rest of the weld looks good. just the start sucks.
@NRC073
@NRC073 3 жыл бұрын
That would be a slag inclusion if you go back on a weld like that, will fail inspection/x-Ray rather grind out and restart a little back and move forward again, 7016 rod is unforgivable, don't take a chance

@jaimemanerodelpino634
@jaimemanerodelpino634 Жыл бұрын
Depending of the rod you are using, sone of them will burn inside of the flux coating so just tap the tip on something hard like concrete to break it. I usually use a worn out grinding disc for this purpose (not attached to the tool). If still is dificult to start an arc, heat up the rod first keeping an arc for a second, either on another place of the workpiece that can be clean off later on, or on a another piece of steel. Once your tip is hot will start the arc at the first tap back on your weld.
