A very simple video that doesn't go into much detail, but serves its purpose as an introductory one! I liked it :)

Very good demonstration of 7 wastes. I am a lean trainer- just wondering if I can use this video to show to the audience during my next lean training?

I prefer 8 wastes approach. Not used talent is one of the most important I would say. Any thougts about it?

It's an interesting debate! The 7 Wastes system is an improvement methodology with a very specific purpose and target in terms of waste elimination, and for that reason the 7 still holds true. The problem is in confusing the 7Wastes philosophy with the general term Waste. If we include the Waste of human potential, then why stop there? What about the waste of energy (if machines left on at idle or computers left on overnight). That is real, measurable and a genuine waste. What about excess use of materials? Most companies use much more material than that that goes into the finished product (trimming allowances, nesting losses or over-makes) and this represents a genuine waste of resources. The point is, though these are indeed wastes they are not an eighth, ninth and tenth waste in the 7 Wastes system! The 7 Wastes is, very specifically, part of a suite of methodologies that target improvements in production, or service, Lead-Times (to reduce cost or improve Delivery Schedule Achievement). The first step in the application of this system is to separate the Lead Time measured into three high level categories; 'Value Adding activity', 'Non Value-adding but essential' activity (like loading a part into a machine), and finally, you guessed it, 'Waste'. This Waste element of the Lead Time is then segregated into the 7 categories defined in the 7 Waste system in order to better understand, quantify and then start to eliminate the wastes. The wastes described in the 7 Wastes system are all categories of 'time', measured in hours, minutes or seconds. Human potential, though incredibly significant, is not an element of our Lead Time measured in minutes!
