The story of rebirth in the confines of poverty!
'Tin City Voices' is the story of survival in a third world slum. In 2011, filmmaker Elijah Marchand explores a shantytown in Georgetown, Guyana. We discover an abused woman, a pregnant mother, and a man struggling to find redemption for his violent life. Their lives do not intersect but run parallel. Through a stirring story about rebirth and forgiveness amongst despair and violence, we uncover the psychological environment that confines those in the ghetto.

This is one of the best documentaries highlighting Guyana's impoverished communities, that I have seen to date. I appreciate how the producers allowed the people share their stories and their thoughts, without being judgemental, condescending or asking stupid questions. Everyone of these people have more strength, courage and faith than most people l know and, I hope that by God's grace they find a way out. Inspite of all his misdeeds, I find it hard to pass judgment on Peter because he is mortally wounded and, I personally would not have lasted one day in his shoes. May God have mercy on his soul.

I'm moving to Guyana in a few months. I have been there before. Guyana has its problems, but many places in the U.S. do as well. We have the same thing in the United States. We try to hide it. Guyana is paradise to those that have made a decent living, but can be a hell to those who have not.

At 21 min. he says: "That's my mentality - I don't care what I do" and presents himself as a man with no morals, yet he as a child decided to work dangerous life-threataning job on a street to save his mother from prostitution. I see him as a man with high moral. Often I see examples of the highest moral and self-sacrifice amongst poorest people from "the bottom of society", while there's hard to find any rich&high educated man in "elite" clean of moral dirtiness. People from this video made me cry from compassion and impassion. And one remark: they all smile and laugh so nice. Love from the Balkans:-)

Similar to America, women in the ghetto of Guyana keep having tons of kids, most of the time with various men, that they cannot afford to take care of. Financially, physically, mentally, spirituality. It's sad. The poverty cycle is extended by thi5.

It's sad, but true, that much of what I saw here, is accepted in our society. My St Roses and QC days in the 90s and 00's as a volunteer at different shelters also opened my eyes to the neglect at the very institutions built to help our children and elderly.

I watched this video, which I am proud to say was an excellent piece of documentary, and I cried! I cried for the people in the slums of who lives in a state of hopelessness. I cried for the scores of children who by nature don't know and can't appreciate the despair their parents faces daily. I cried for the possibility of hopelessness and destitution they face. I cried for those rich, who through questionable gains auction Brazilian girl, sometimes, $1.5M (G) for a weekeng in Guyana. I cry!

Excellent documentary! I read most of the comments. Some of us make judgements on others (the people in this video), without understanding what empathy is. We are ALL God's Children. I am curious to know how many people watched this video & really and truly want to be and see a change in the lives of the people in this particular shanty town. You can choose to be the change you want to see in the people in this video and start there.. Mother Theresa, sick of stepping over the starving, sick, homeless, orphaned, etc. in Calcutta, India, where there are Millions of poir people, took her last check from the school where she worked and decided to start feeding the fist set of people instead of stepping over them...if you don't know her story, you're reading this on the Internet. Why not take a few minutes and look her up. I live in the States and I'm originally from Uitvlugt, Guyana. If you want to be the change and see in manifest in Guyana, please contact me. Bless

This makes me have more admiration for the guyanese people.Even in the face of struggle they are very humble and resilient, dont see one tear shedding or complaining even thought they have all the reason to do so,but it seems like its a total seperation between the blacks and indians.Throughout this video I dont see one indian person living in squalor so is there's oppresion in Guyana amongst the blacks in Guyana, heard that the prime minister is more in tune with the indians in Guyana rather than the black people.

Indian parents are very strict on their kids. Discipline and hard work is all they teach their kids. The government has never provided for Indians. Indians know how to create things like jobs and businesses. Indians have always been farmers, ranchers, and fishermen. They progressed because they knew people needed food and that's where the money was at. That's why many Indians are in these industries. They take whatever job they can get or create it on their own. They also save money. Black-Guyanese adults need to tell their kids that a small amount money is good enough, save, and work hard. It will grow. That's what Indians tell their kids. They do not sit around and hope for an IT job or an office job. They keep working.

And yes we have tons of lazy Indians in Guyana who only hope to live off the Government. But there are many blacks and indians who are lazy. No one can change that. They need to get up and work, not hope for a Visa to the US. When they move to the US that is when they want to work. Just don't understand that part.

I think you have done a splendid job Elijah. The documentary stood testimony to the blistering poverty evident in the Tiger Bay ghetto region in the inner city of Guyana, my country. It surely does highlight the double standard inherent in Guyana. It is documentary like this that galvanizes people to apply social pressure geared towards mobilizing the government to redress poverty issues in the country.

Great job Elijah. My brother sent this to me, for which I'm thankful. I appreciate your efforts as a filmmaker and as a human being for sharing the stories of these people. As a Guyanese, and like I shared with my friends, many times, the issues that don't affect us -poverty, abuse, etc- are easy to ignore since we are not directly affected by it. But the indirect impact should matter also. It showcased an honest perspective into the reality of the lives of many Guyanese and people worldwide.

All political parties have failed Guyana not just the PPP. The US is way more corrupt than Guyana. Only difference is the law is enforced is the US. Guyana the laws are not enforced. Governments can create laws and hope for results. However, change is only up to the people. The government does not tell you to steal, beat your wife, and not work. Change starts within the home. The way people are raised has a huge impact on society. Good people with good values create a better society. Bad people with no values create a depleting society. The US also has depleting societies and progressive societies. People are the core of society not the government. We change things not the government.

Growing up in Kingston makes this even more moving. As a child, i had close friends who were from the Tiger Bay area. My family also employed people from the area. I remember "Corn Bread" and i would sit and talk for hours about the reality's of life and the struggles he endured. He was one of the community leaders in Tiger Bay i believe, and i hope he somehow gets to see this video. Those reality's helped to shape who i am and i thank you for doing the same with this beautiful documentary.

Elijah, thank you for reminding many of us of our responsibilities. Wow, I teared up while ckecking out the flick. 99.99% of the residents of Tiger Bay are just simply- down-out- on-luck and are not thieves! They are not the ones responsible for Guyana being one of the most corrupt Nations in the world. For many many years, a few have been trying to smash and grab this neighborhood for its great commercial value. I am a product of this area who hitchhiked to the U.S in 1973 when it was not too difficult a task. I managed to survive in America with no friends or family but with what I had learned while growing up in the Tiger Bay area. With "the blessing from the power up there", I would like to return to my hood to lend a hand as soon as the last of my eight (8) children completes college - in one more year. Please pay attention to the dialectic of the seniors. It says something about how this neighborhood once was. Thanks again Elijah.

This is the sad truth of life in the ghetto. These people are so very oppressed when many of them are just looking for a way out. Thank you for sharing this video. I was born and raised in Guyana but never paid much attention to this group of people. We were always warned that they were "bad" and "violent." Amazing work!

Not to mention the medical treatment in Guyana is free. Why the woman or man couldn't take a stop and the man a vasectomy. Why make so many children if u know life already hard. People choose their way of life no government can help u there. Tiberbay is private land these people squatt there .

So sad! Most people just regard Tiger Bay as a bad area and think nothing more of it. Experiencing our own ghetto face to face, as this documentary has so brilliantly achieved, has given us (me at least) a whole new perspective, and a heart wrenching feeling of empathy, that has awaken a whole bunch of soul searching ethical and moral questions.
