Another way to avoid shrill notes is using a lower key whistle. I'm always quite surprised at the difference between a C rather than a D. A Bb or G is even more mellowing for those high notes.

The C fingering (oxx) is high in pitch. It’s almost a 1/4 tone sharp in fact. Wouldn’t a oxx|xxo tuning be better in tune?

It might be, but having a sharp Cnat is kind of a hallmark of Irish music. The pipes almost always have a sharp Cnat, thanks to the cross-fingering needed to play it. Same goes for the flute and whistle. Even the great fiddlers you'd hear on old 78s often wouldn't bother to differentiate between a C# and a Cnat, or they would play a microtone between them. I know a great Scottish flute/pipes player who recently took up the fiddle, and I hear he's driving his teacher mad because he plays all of his Cnat's very sharp. After years of piping and fluting, playing Cnat "in tune" must sound wrong to his ears, imagine that!

Yep, the "ideal" fingering really depends on both the whistle and what it is you're trying to do with it. If the intonation bothers you then it's good to try alternates - this fingering works well for speed and ornamentation which is why I tend to stick with it unless I'm playing an air where the intonation of that one note might stand out more.

great video! it would really help me if or at the beginning of the video or at the end you could play the jig in full without pauses and in the intended speed. Helps it sort it in my mind. because now I first need to search for this jig on youtube when they are really playing it
