I get emails from folks pretty often saying they're struggling with getting the proper feel of the jig rhythm, so I put together this video of a bunch of exercises that key in on that lift that you get out of a jig. Here I cover tonguing, cuts, double-taps, and rolls with a focus on how they fit into jigs.
Here's the first video of exercises that I reference: • Tin Whistle Lesson - A...

Bought a tin whistle last week (forgive me, it's a walton mellow D). After the initial "please dont divorce me" phase, i am LOVING your videos. This is definitely making it all digestible. I'll put up a video of my progress if you reply.

I remember being fairly alright with ornamentation when i was a young boy at school but picking the whistle up again after about 10+ years, I've lost all technique and gone all rigid and stiff. Very helpful stuff here.

In a nutshell, Jigs have a mostly triplet feel in contrast to the more straight feel of a reel.

Merry Christmas to you too - just practice those higher octave notes slowly and make sure you're getting consistent tone. It'll get there!

Very worthy lesson indeed, I think it's the best explanatiin of the jig rhythm one can easily access so far. Thank you for keeping up the work, it's really helpful for us progressing players. Is the same technique applicable to the flute playing as well? As In my understanding the use of throat or tounge articulation in flute playing is considerably smaller. How to achieve this same lift on the flute too? One more thing: would you consider making a tutorial for Tommy Mulhaire's jig one day? It's a beautiful old tune that sounds really well played slowly, ChrisMcMullan's take on this tune on his album Uillean Tales, opening a set of jigs can be a good example to my ear. It's number two on the album, but goes by a wrong name.. I think your style of playing with lots of lift, triplets, cranns and double cuts/short cranns would make this tune sound really nice. Sits well on on an F whistle too! Thanks again for the great content, all the best to you and the channel!

Thanks for the kind words and thanks for the suggestion, I'll put it on my list! I haven't played that tune in years so I'll see if I can dust it off. As for flute v whistle the concept is the same but you're right, the technique is a bit different due to the flute embouchure. I think I did a video on tonguing/glottal stops on the flute that would demonstrate the differences.

I got problems to play high notes clean. how can I work on that?
@whistletutor
@whistletutor 6 жыл бұрын
I did a video on octave jumping - that's a good exercise to get familiar with exactly how much air is required for each note. It's just one of those things that takes practice and getting comfortable with how the instrument responds.

I'm a nascent whistle player but I have found this problem is sometimes the fault of the quality of whistle. And sometimes one may be a bit timid about how much air is required to hit the second octave. I have found that making one's lips tighter makes a stronger air stream and helps hit that second octave. Think about spitting cherry seeds on the first octave, and watermelon seeds for the second.

It is hard to see your fingeringering on the top two notes. Could you please show that clearly as the words on bottom of screen cover those positions. I am playing a D I think. I play open top hole closed all others for top not then C open all holes. But that doesn't seem right. I would love to figure it out. It seems you go down a note when I go up. Confused. Great tutorial.

Can you point me to where exactly you mean? (like a timestamp) I did a quick scan through the video and couldn't find a spot that had text overlay - I do have that on some newer videos for various reasons but I didn't remember doing it on these older ones. If you can point out where it's getting confusing I'll do my best to check it out!
