If you just want to play it for fun, that's one thing, but if you are quite serious about it I would recommend diversifying a little bit. I went back to college later in life, about the same age as you, and started to get back into music. I originally started taking cello lessons in grade school, but due to lack of funds had to stop. When I was back in college I started with guitar, then did a few semesters of voice, and then overlapped that with introduction to theory and cello. I am also learning keyboard now. They all play off of and support each other and I believe I have been able to improve at a faster rate with each. Also, at our age I would recommend a diverse physical fitness regimen. Nothing too crazy, but at least something stretchy like yoga, and something to help with building a solid core like Pilates. A strong core will help your playing and help prevent other parts of your body from getting sore during playing. You don't have to be a weightlifter though. My body is a little beat up (Marine Corps), so diet and supplementation helps with joint issues.

I stopped playing cello 4 years ago as I also play double bass and found they clashed a bit, especially when it came to working out which instrument I have to play in which orchestra. I decided to pick it up again since I have nothing better to do in lockdown and wow! It’s amazing how you never truly forget how to play an instrument, it’s just reading cello music I need to work on since I get confused a lot with my bass music and cello music 😂😂

Will be turning 40 this year and I just bought a vintage cello last week. Got my hand on a good rosin two days ago and was able to stabilize the tuning last night and was finally able to hear those very first eargasmic open string notes vibrating. I'm a Heavy Metal guitarist who also plays bass for our studio recordings. Playing the cello was a lifelong dream of mine and what got me convinced that I can learn to play it too was because I was able to learn the shamisen (Japanese guitar) from scratch and now I can play it decently enough to record my lines. Thank you very much for sharing your expertise with us beginners. It makes it a whole lot easier for us noobs to learn (especially because our cello teacher is so pretty too 😍😁)

Yay! Cello lessons! : D I started learning the cello almost 2 years ago, but since I also play the violin, my bow hand's pinky has become so confused between both instruments. :/ I also struggle keeping my left thumb behind my 2nd finger instead of my 1st finger like with violin. There are lots of similarities between the two instruments, but the small differences are really hard for me to change! :o I really like the cello though, and I'm excited for more cello lesson videos! : D Thumb position is really rough for me. Keeping the fingers curved instead of smushed-looking in thumb-position feels impossible.. T_T

She makes some very good points. Most anatomic problems that affect musicians have to do with being stuck in the same position and holding the tension for prolonged periods of time. The same goes for any other repetitive motion, including typing on a keyboard. When I was starting to learn the piano, my teacher told me to hold my fingers arched, which actually created so much unnecessary tension. Not until many years later did I realise the negative impact of this. Thing is, unrestrained movement can only come from total relaxation. After having experienced debilitating RSD I now know that the best to play is by slowly keep moving my entire body during the whole performance and, truth be told, if you get carried away by the music, you will find yourself naturally doing that anyway. The human body was not made to be still, it is made for movement; the best way to keep it healthy is to keep moving (within reason).

Tina, thank you so much. I took 4 years of lessons as a little girl, I am now picking it back up and this was a brilliant reminder of the very basics. Thank you!!

I'm an electric bassist, and have been wanting to pick up cello as a second instrument for a while now, but didn't have any idea how to start learning. This is exactly what I needed. I will be bookmarking this video for after I get my first cello.

Everything you said about the technique is just what I'm doing now and I think it's incredible that you do this kind of videos to share your way of playing and the tips that work for you. Thanks for the help and I hope to see a new video soon.

I'm not even musical, and this was a great video for beginners. Question, does it matter if you are left or right handed? If you are left handed would you just switch the cello to the other side?
@tinaguo
@tinaguo 6 жыл бұрын
Aw thanks! It doesn't matter, because both hands are being used! Finger with your left and Bow with your right :) x

I met a guy one year and a half ago who played with a specially built only for him cello, a mirrored one, because he is left handed. Either way, he was a special case, of course it shouldn't matter. Btw he plays exceptionally!

I leftie 'violinist' - and casual cellist. When I first started, my teacher said that lefties tend to have a slight advantage due to the left side being used for notes - aka, the finer details. I found after a couple of weeks, it was very natural to play with the left!
