Painting by numbers has become a hobby for me since Covid started, so I invested in my own brushes and Gesso. It's translucent and if you cover your canvas with it first the paint goes on more smoothly. It's pretty inexpensive. I think I paid 5 bucks for a big jar.

Great video! I just ordered my first paint by number kit to do since I was a kid. I have bought other acrylic paint, a pour kit to try an acrylic pour project on canvas; brushes and palette knives; and numerous canvasses of different sizes. But, I saw paint by numbers on Michaels website, and decided to do an easy one, medium difficult, then a difficult painting just to get my mind back into the groove of painting, mixing, how to soften edges, etc. I'm 64 yrs old, and eventually wanting to work into painting some of the photography I have shot over the years. Keep up the good work and the encouragement for your viewers!

You should put Clear Gesso over the canvas before starting painting. And you should use Flow Aid in your paint to make it go further. Just a couple of drops mixed into the paint. Tape the canvas onto a piece of cardboard flat, that helps and then put onto a Easel if you want.

One tip is to find a place that sells paint-by-number kits with good quality paint! I tried a couple in the past, and usually ones I found in amazon tend to have more watery paint/the colors aren't that good, but some websites sell kits with thicker paint, and that made the end painting look more solid.

I love this! I bought three different paintings and I have finished one. That took me about a week, few hours a day. Putting it up right and painting didn't work for me because I really had to rest my hand on the table because I'm sooooooo bad at drawing lines and stuff. If you have a steady hand you can do that :) I really want to go and finish my second painting! They look fancy once they hang on the wall ;)

Tips for beginners 1) Paint the lightest colours first, that way if you accidentally paint the wrong section you can easily cover it up with the darker colours. 2). Try to paint the fields in an order that you won't risk putting your hands in the paint, i.e. if your right-handed start to the left and if you're left-handed start to the right. 3. Try to paint only one colour at the time to minimise the risk of having accident, and this way will also help you keep the colours sealed and not dry up.

You earned my subscription with this one. :) Also, getting it framed takes it to the Next Level! Tangentially related... I grew up with COLOR by Numbers which used colored PENCILS instead of paints. I LOVED those! My faves were of the space program, with pics of Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo spacecraft. QUESTIONS...! 1) Did you have to MIX paints to get certain shades? I almost bought a PBN but was put off with having to mix paints. For example, two parts red to one part black gives paint #32. I thought I'd have trouble getting the EXACT same proportion if I ran out of paint for a section and had to re-mix the blend. So, I chickened out. 2) Do you regret having your color test strip SO CLOSE to the painting? I imagine this forced you to make your matte come RIGHT UP against your image. That may be fine in some/many instances, but I can imagine that being limiting on other occasions. 3) Did you let one color dry completely before starting a new color, so they wouldn't mix/blend/bleed at the borders? 3a) In hindsight, do you think it would have been "better" to blend them? You alluded to the technique, but I'm interested in how much it would add to the piece versus how much effort it would take. Your thoughts would be appreciated. In closing, I love your energy, your cuteness, and the diversity of projects you take on. My next viewing will be of your "diamond painting"... something that I've been meaning to try. Keep up the good work, and DO WHAT YOU LOVE! Thanks!
