I will be honest, I think one issue with this mentality that I have had in the past is becoming so obsessed with self-improvement and 'finding my purpose' that I never gave myself room to just be happy. It got to the point where I really struggled to have fun anymore and even began cutting out social time to achieve my goals. I realised now, after taking time to reflect, that learning is kind of like going to the gym. It is a means to an end, but not the reason in itself. You go to the gym to stay healthy and fit, and to have a good life with less health concerns and better mental health. But if you spent all your time going to the gym and tried to consider it your 'purpose' it would likely start to affect your life because your 'self worth' is being measured by how much weight you can life or your weight etc. This is fine if that is what you want, but if it began making you unhappy because you always felt like you are not fit enough and you began taking supplements etc. I would say it was toxic. It is the same with learning. Learning 2-3 times a week new things is good for you, it helps you feel like you are growing and it can help your career or just provide relaxation. But learning itself is not 'purpose' and it is important to recognise that is is just one part of your life, and not a measurement of your value etc.

Thats because most of us focus too much on our goals. That means that our happiness is in the future and never in the present and once you achive that the satisfaction you get is momentarily. The way to overcome that is finding a way/method where you are going to enjoy the path you take just as must(if not more) than your goal

I definitely see your point and I definitely think that a lot of people go to the gym to do some workout someone else made for “fat burning” or “weight loss” or to look “huge”. I personally found that just focusing on maintaining good health has been a great motivation for me. I really enjoy running and calisthenics and it I like making time to do a bit of exercise every day. Of course, be mindful of how you are feeling and how much time you have, but I have found that setting aside time every day has not reduced my motivation for the most part. I also think that taking a designated rest day once a week where I just walk 1-2 miles has helped me keep my motivation. Why am I telling you this? I think that while having something that pushes your buttons can be helpful, you have to enjoy what you are doing in the first place. Then, setting aside some time is something you are glad you did, not something that burns you out.

100% agree. I had a major health burnout in my early 20s and I was nearly headed down that road again but I learned my lesson last time and now I’m slowing down to take care of me. This is how I learned to think of it: You can keep refilling the gas in your car’s tank and keep driving (boost your motivation, hustle and grind) but if your car has a faulty engine (poor physical/mental health) and you ignore that check engine light (your body’s signs of burnout) and fail to do car maintenance (dr visits and self-care)… …your car WILL give out on you and you WILL crash sooner rather than later. Monitor your engine (wellbeing) and don’t forget to pull over once in while for maintenance (dr visits and self-care) and especially as SOON as any warning lights turn on (you have signs of burnout).

I just wanna say that I did try to maintain this life balance between university and a full time job with ADHD. Things went well the first 2 months but after that... I realised that the free time I had wasn't even enough for studying. I always try to do it because I needed the money and everyone is like: oh it's easy I can do it; If you can't do it then your just dumb. I see these youtube videos and honestly I wish I could relate but unfortunately I ended up failing my school year, anxiety and depressed. When I tried to study I was already so tired that I weren't really studying. The preassure to be able to do it as everyone else led me to a very down road that I wouldn't get out without special help. Please don't force yourself. Everyone is different and you don't have to be like everyone else.

i agree with you, i'd like to be more productive and consistent with my work but it just seems like an impossible task when you have ADHD, to me it's like carrying multiple things at once, then you accidentally drop one of them and when you try to pick it up, you start accidentally dropping other things, and when you try to pick them up, you drop the things you've just picked up and it turns into this never ending cycle of trying to pick things up and dropping them... it can work for some time but after that you get so tired with this cycle that you just drop all the things at once because you can't carry them and you're mentally exhausted. At least that's the way I feel and no matter how hard I try I just can't do many things at once. But that's the way our brains work and we shouldn't beat ourselves over it

Agreed. To be fair, simply "doing what you love" and "never giving up" is not enough, and sometimes even set you to doom due to sinking cost fallacy. Sometimes, reassessing your bearing is neccesary. It wasn't until I graduated with multiple degrees and started working again that I realised my multiple years of studying gained me a career I don't even want... Since graduation, I have naturally got into fixing cars, making art, being an adventurer, trying extreme sports and travelling. I constantly studying these areas because it is where I am subconsciously heading. My employers look at me in a negative light because I ignore their in-house training and focus on my own education. This is an awesome video, but it's missing the other half: pace yourself and take care of yourself. Holding yourself accountable is a great way to get things done, but you have to make you're using a positive mindset-you should be doing things because you're inspired to see the result, not because you're afraid of disappointing someone. Do the things that make you happy, both short term and long term. You might be a little slower at doing things than if you're pressuring yourself, but you'll feel good every time you're working toward that dream, and you'll keep burnout at bay. And if you feel like your mind or body needs a break, listen. You're recharging and shifting perspective. New perspectives bring new ideas and life into your goals. Make sure you're taking care of yourself physically, too: sleep, eat, and exercise. Do what works to reduce your stress. Know your limits and respect them-if you want to stretch them, treat them like muscles and build them over time. I've had to learn all this the hard way, but hopefully you don't have to. Life is a marathon, and it's OK to lean on others every now and then. Naruto is at his best when he lets himself depend on his friends.

Well the positive mindset comes when you feel like it, you can force yourself into positive thinking and then later realize you have been adding work for your brain where you need to do none. Some things will be hard in life and they need to get done, if you do them with the understanding that some things will be hard in life you got a great deal less problems crashing around your head.

As someone who is currently doing this (full time job and coursing physics at the UBA), i want to share my experience. Both my classes and job are from home, so that make things easier by a lot. Everyday i'm from 9 am to 9 pm doing things, and just take some day of the weekend of if i really need it. It is possible to do it? Yes, it depends a lot on what job you get and what career you're doing and it will more or less harder. Would i recommend it? Absolutely not, unless you REALLY need the job and REALLY want to continue studying. Basically, it is possible to do it because your body just enters survival mode. Your brain knows it needs to keep going even if it cant, and just starts to accelerates like a motor working at its limit. Eventually, the anxiety and the stress kicks in, and you need to be really strong to keep going. Damn, there has been days where my brain was so accelerated that i wanted to cry but my eyes were wide open and dry and my mind couldn't stop. Fall asleep is harder, because your brain still is alert and can't stop. Eventually, it becomes harder and harder to keep going, start to drop some things to prioritaze others and everything just falls appart. Now, if you're in a situation where you have no other choice, and you've come to this video and looked at this comment, don't worry. You can do it. It is going to be hard, but at the end of the day you will overcome. If you need to talk, i'm here. Even if i'm an stranger in the internet, i hope i can be of some help.

It's definitely possible but (!): - you have to cut off much time with friends/ familiy - if you have a hobby which is not work related you will spend much lesser time for it - you will eventually have a higher cortisol level in the evening hours which will eventually make you ill in the long term - you will have less qualities in other areas in life (social life, handcraft, less humour, less creativity in work etc.) Don't get me wrong. It is possible but not for the most people. I would say leisure and relaxation time is obligatory to maintain everything you learn and train. Stress leads for example to brain dammage and so on. For example the learning process occur actually in sleep/ relaxation mode like the muscle building process.

I liked this video, I felt embrace by the vibe and almost planned to do a scoreboard, then I remembered that personally I have a full-time job, that is actually taking so much energy, so I'm way too exhausted right now. My goal for this month is actually to lie down on my couch, my sub-goals is to feed myself, watch YT videos and be happy (-: If your goal and sub-goals give you a smile when you are reading them then go for it, if It feels like an obligation then I think we should double think of it, we already have enough things that we had to do in one day to put more on that pile. Just take good care!

If you have the right balance in life (self care, keeping up with relations, study time, gym time work, nutrition, work time etc) then this works! I did this when starting out in college. Having children and little to no support will make this very hard to almost impossible with expenses and how much time a child needs from you. Just being honest and I love kids but this is the reality of having children sometimes. Each story will be different. We do what we can. Life is a dance. We dance to all situations to make it fit accordingly

careful not to fall into the "self help" trap that these types of videos can create. they often make you "feel" like you are improving so you watch more of them and read books and go to seminars, etc. What people often don't realise is that "self help" is a business industry worth billions. you say you feel you are getting a bit of direction so please look at yourself and see if you are actually taking steps toward that direction instead of just feeling it. Took seven years to graduate, but it still got done. I have a masters in accounting now, and I didn't break my back or my brain to get it. First, this is a great video and gives tons of useful and actionable info. But the older I get, the more I realize that figuring out what is your limit is THE most important thing. People are different. Some people can work crazy long hours without a problem, but most people cannot. It is true that if you push yourself harder, you will achieve more. But beware of the cost. Everyone has a hard line that should rarely be crossed. Fathom that line wisely, and always stay under it. Then let’s talk about the strategy to maximize the output within your limit. BTW, it’s more like Lah San Gahng.

I definitely relate to the social accountability strategy. I'm a painter but I also work a non related full time job. One of the things that motivates me is curating art shows. This puts me into a position of not wanting wanting to disappoint the other artists in the show as well as the gallery owner. That feeling of extra responsibility towards others is what puts me into action regardless of how tired I feel after a long day at work.

I’m enrolled in an accelerated university 2-year degree program for computer animation. It’s four years of knowledge crammed into 2 years. On average, the sheer amount of work I have to do for school a week is nearly 30 to 40 hours for just ONE class. I couldn’t maintain a full-time job. I didn’t have the time for it. I knew what I signed up for when I enrolled and I knew my free time was getting reduced. I work so much my family hardly sees me (the university I attend don’t really have breaks throughout the year for the holidays, except for Christmas which is two weeks. Some breaks you still have work to do throughout them). The workload has gotten to the point that I started hyperventilating in my bed at night, thinking of all the work I have to do. And my instructor for this month decided to address the class one day and tell us “we need to make sacrifices for this school. Cut your time with friends and family; tell them you’re not seeing them for the holidays.” My point is dreams are important, but if your dreams ever cause you to sacrifice your mental health and time with loved ones, you may need to reevaluate things. Finding a balance is key to life.

With all respect to your own dreams and the crazy amount of work you are doing. I'd really like to punch your instructor in the face. Like... we are not immortals, you know? Long stress and lots of work can be manageable, especially for younger people, and may be they will bring financial success later. Or, maybe, and hopefully it doesn't happen for you, a person gets sick from it. Because long stress is bad for immune system, and immune system is what prevents cancer and other things. Things that are really bad for financial success, dreams and everything. I'm not telling you what to do with your life. Maybe in 5 years the world will be amazed by your animation. You know how they say - imagine where you want to be in 5 years, and do what you need to get there. After all lessons my life taught me, I find it makes more sense to imagine, what if all I have left is 5 years. How would I want to spend the rest of my life. Best wishes and stay safe and healthy )

For some people, ingredient two is the hardest, if not impossible. For me it defenitely is because there is nothing that compels me to do something productive that works consistently. Sometimes it's a burst of motivation but then goes away after a short while. Sometimes it's feeling guilty about not doing something, but guess... that goes away too. All of the reasons are temporary.
@vtheory7531

This is a late comment, but I relate to this too. Especially when it came to a creative endeavour e.g. writing, sometimes I get a burst of creativity and could write a thousand words in a day, and in other times I could barely bring myself to write 100 words because I was so uninspired. I managed to overcome this recently when I was given a topic to write about with a deadline, by making writing a routine. Every day I open my document and force myself to write something, even when I had no motivation. Even if it’s just re-reading what I already wrote and proof-reading/editing/rewriting some parts, I consider that progress. Eventually I managed to write ~20K words at the deadline. Basically you can’t rely on motivation alone when it comes to a big difficult project because motivation doesn’t last. Make the action a habit, something you just do regularly regardless of motivation. I find that is more effective to get you closer to your goals.
@MrCmon113

The problem is that my actions have very little and very indirect influence on what I really want. There is certainly better and worse things to do, but they're connected to a great deal of uncertainty. It's much easier to motivate yourself if you know that you can do X and get Y. For me it's do X and maybe you have raised your chances of getting Y at some point a little bit.

I don't like setting goals (anymore). I always quit after hitting my goal eventhough I swore myself working on an even bigger goal afterwards. I'm also easily scared and anxious so I never felt good enough or like I wasn't doing enough. Now I focus on habits and doing things consistently. Even a lazy workout on a hard day counts as workout, even a bad sketch counts as drawing. No more guilt or regret, just doing my best everday. The habits I do are obviously chosen with a goal in mind but in such a way that I'll hit the goal anyways: eg 'build a website' becomes 'work on it every day for half an hour (or more)' or 'learn french' is '10 min french everyday (could be duolingo, reading or netflix whatever I feel like that day)'. Not only do I achieve my goals on the way but make sure to sustain them without the risk of 'oh I achieved x I'll give myself a quick pause now' and falling off the wagon forever. It might not be the most effective way to actually hit those goals but definitely the most enjoyable and therefore the most sustainable for me.

I did three terms of online college paid for by my employer for 6 months. I got about 98% in each course (I think it was pretty easy- SNHU online was the college). I started out strong, but I think I subconsciously knew I could get good grades with less time committed. This means I went from studying and participating at the beginning of the initial term for about 10-15 hours weekly because it was only part-time (worth 3 credits per course). I eventually started doing about 5-10 hours per week after maybe a month of starting online college courses. I just wanted to share how I did it: I would wake up in the morning three times a week (as I worked 4 days a week, 10 hours a day) and start getting some take-out food (I considered this a reward). Then, I would watch TV, play video games, and study. That's it. That was the whole process that I would rinse and repeat and it worked and got me good grades. Hope this helps.

Data Science is a never-ending circle of studying. Go girl! I like studying, but at the same time I realise that I can't create healthy relationships with my family.

I have never watched Anime till date. Call me old school. Guilty. But I definitely appreciate the process where you connected your consistency level to a fictional character. There are too many triggers that push me towards quitting. And two things that push my buttons are definitely social accountability (major credit goes to your live streaming sessions) and the thought of doing something different.

I loved FPS game, but was afraid of letting my teammate down, so I practiced Aimlab 5 minutes no matter how busy I was. 3 months later I can output damage much more than I used to, and have more confident in FPS. We just need to "show up" and make "learning" a habit like what Tina said.

Mentality is so important in getting ahead in life. Its obviously not the only thing, but that power to push oneself in to levels of discomfort is what causes some to become even more successful then their counterparts. Good job and thanks for sharing!

Goddamnit, I'm motivated by people telling me I can't do stuff and by competition. But everyone is so NICE. How am I supposed to live to my true shonen protagonist potential when my family is so damn supportive?! The struggle, the pain!
