This happens even in the carribean where I'm from, but definitely like the U.S. In the carribean there's def more of an appreciation for all skin tones, but people here are def more colorstruck. It's an issue in regards to colorism and classism (in places untouched by colonialism).

+XxxMuseluverxxX ok I read your comment and noticed you said we have more appreciation for all skin tones but we are def starstruck here too. it really is true. we have light skin idealism and a mentality of "white is right." we aren't extreme in terms of colourism but we do place light skin on a pedestal. pertaining to the music industry however, we don't really care what skin tone you have. at least it is that way in Trinidad where I live. most Caribbean artists aren't even light skin tbh. in the Caribbean, being dark skin won't negatively affect your quality of life (especially in terms of gaining employment and stuff), but it wouldn't hurt to be light skin. your life will be def be real nice if you were light skin. I am light skin (not super pale but light enough to not be considered dark or brown skin) and I can say for a fact that me and my sister can throw the same stone using the same amount of energy and the same technique, but my stone would reach further than hers simply because I wield it.

I don't know how old you are but I'm 31 and I remember a lot of dark skinned and light skinned artists getting pretty equal attention back in the 90s. I really didn't hear all this light skin dark skin nonsense. It was more about how talented you were. And you HAD to first gain success in the black community before labels would even attempt to market you to mainstream America.

Because she's got crazy talent but have you seen footage of some of her live shows? She comes out and spends an hour dancing around to the tracks of her songs, barely singing live. She has that beyonce perception of herself before she ever had platinum record clout. If you cant put on a good live show it'll kill you when your sound doesn't match up with whats popular on hip hop radio so you don't get playtime there either.
