The BBC TV series was superlative and I've always been fond of it. This radio programme though, well - I have my imagination and mind's eye to rely on. Nothing beats the mind's eye. I can't help thinking though that George Smiley is Bernard Hepton's character Toby Esterhausè (sp?) from the telly series!

I've just found The Complete Smiley with SRB as Smiley and the wonderful Brian Cox as Alec Leamus. I've skipped A Murder of Quality and Call for the Dead, jumping straight to The Spy Who Came In From The Cold. They were made in 2009 so there's no version of A Legacy of Spies - my latest reason to return to the oppressive paranoia of the George Smiley universe. Now we've lost John le Carre it's doubtful there will ever be another reason to pull me back, once more.

Is it James grout as Percy ?? ❤
@VLind-uk6mb5 ай бұрын
@@paulleverton9569 A Murder of Quality is a detective story, but don't miss Call for the Dead if you like spy thrillers. It's great background to some of the things alluded to in the later Smiley novels. A Murder of Quality has a nice little movie available her on YT, with Denholm Elliott as Smiley and a top notch cast supporting, starting with Glenda Jackson as Ailsa Brimley. It's one of her most endearing roles.

Ha! No matter how good the source material, every radio drama has dialogue that no person would ever say say in real life. Everything unseen is over-explained in the dialogue, and it's tiresome. "Oh, hallo - who are you coming into the door out of the taxi that's just pulled up?" Okay, I'm exaggerating for effect. But it patronises the listener. and makes the narrative very clunky. If anyone doubts this, try listening to a good drama on television without looking at it. It's so much more realistic because that's how people really behave. And your imagination does the rest.
