I noticed if you can rig up a hanging magnifying 🔍 glass to look through while you're porting. It makes a huge difference at how accurate your cutting is. It's also helps prevent mistakes & grinding too much. I still need to learn how to use a degree wheel & the proper angles & shapes to make.. But did a little porting under a magnifying glass & it helps big time, to keep the cutting bit exactly where u want it.. If you can get one of those clamp-on on rotational arm lamps & attach a magnifying glass to it. So u have light & magnification on the cylinder. You'll be able to grind the perfect shape & angle you want & get when you want it to open & close down to a 1/4 of a mm.

Chris, if you don't already have a Stihl elasto start handle and pull cord on your 044 you might give that a try. I run them on those old saws, especially my 066's, helps alot.

Hopefully it will make you giggle when you run it buddy. 👍

I’m looking forward to my 394 build now.

I recently didn’t buy a 395 even though the price was right. I’d probably use it once just to do it and go back to using the smallest saw I have that is qualified for the job. My dewalt top handle does all the small stuff and limbing. The 346xp is really good up through 12-14 in wood. A ms290 that was passed down had a bit more torque and was brought out for cutting from both sides. A ms400 with a 28 will now handle anything I’ve ever needed. A 48” pine is the biggest by over a foot over second place.

Those draked intakes are awesome for helping flow, I personally do mine a LITTLE different because how I grind I got better results a different way but as you mentioned we all grind different. I can’t wait to see that saw run. Those Bearclaw style pipes run great, I have my own version that’s similar to. Bearclaw pipe but slightly different exit ports. And yeah the old 1128 series all had really aggressive timing and if you don’t pull them like you mean it, they will rip the cord out of your hand

To the person with the hard starting 044 you can undo the flywheel nut and retard the tiding a degree or two. This will keep it from kicking back but still run very well
