The reintroduction of the old national anthem, titled ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee’, in the face of worsening economy, has elicited a wave of criticism among many Nigerians.
On Wednesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the bill to reintroduce the anthem into law, despite calls from the attorney-general of the federation and minister of justice Lateef Fagbemi, who has argued that the decision to change the country’s national anthem, should be subjected to an extensive review.
Some users on social media have accused the president of acting in his own selfish interest by assenting to the bill, as revealed in this interview which he granted during the celebration of Nigeria’s Independence Day in 2022, where he stated his preference for the reintroduced anthem over the version that has been used in the last 46 years.
The Speaker, House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu For Bringing Back the National Anthem that they all Grew Up With stating that the Anthem inspires hope.
A video of pupils of the Justice and Peace Primary School in Ogun State, as well as pupils in Lagos reciting the first stanza of "Nigeria, We Hail Thee" during their morning assembly has made rounds on social media.
A special rendition of the anthem, ‘Arise, O compatriots’, by media influencer Enioluwa Adeoluwa, has made rounds on social media. According to the National anthem bill, the second stanza of this anthem is now designated as the ‘New National Prayer’.
The Nigerian police arrested, a content creator known as Humble Sent after he made defamatory claims in a viral video against, music executive and buisnessman Emeka Okonkwo, popularly known as E-Money.
The content creator alleged that E-Money was having an affair with the wife of Nollywood actor Junior Pope, who died in a boat accident In April and also accused him of being involved in his death. The content creator later admitted that he lied in the viral video after he was arrested by the police.
Chioma Okoli, a tomato paste reviewer, who is being prosecuted by the police, under Nigeria's Cybercrime Act, over her review of a tomato paste product, manufactured by Erisco foods, has taken center stage again.
On Tuesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja remanded her in prison, after she was arraigned, for alleged defamation against the tomato paste manufacturer. Okoli has denied any wrongdoing.
At the hearing of her bail request, her lawyer, Inibehe Effiong presented a medical report, stating that his client has had a miscarriage because of the psychological trauma brought- on by the case.
The prosecution lawyer however asked the judge to reject Okoli’s bail application, because she might jump bail, arguing that she had breached the terms of an earlier administrative bail the police granted her.
In September 2023, the police had arrested Okoli for claiming in a Facebook post, that the Erisco tomato paste product she bought in the market tasted sugary.
Erisco Foods described her claim as “untrue and unfounded” The case has been adjourned till Friday, May 31st.

Are bokoharam, iswap, fulani terrorists not the youths? They have already taken back their country but only for their kind. So we better leave them and take back only what is ours, yoruba Nation, Biafra, and they can keep their dry north for themselves. After all the north is already a separate country of it's own. They have sharia and we have the constitution.

ILLITERATE, educate yourself before posting rubbish. 1. The president does not have the power to change the anthem. He only signed a bill passed by both national assembly and senate. 2. It was not the colonial master that gave us the anthem. There was a worldwide contest that included Nigerians, Africans, Caribbeans, UK, US, etc. A panel of judges (Nigerians) decided that the entry by the British woman was the best. That was how it became our anthem.

Brilliant and resplendent Ojy presenting flawlessly. The equally elegant Ayo, Rufai and Dr Reuben Abati with a great analysis. Congratulations to Ogodo and her family. The national anthem change is merely an attempt to distract the citizens from the biting hardship and difficulties facing them. No food, no electricity, no job, no pipe borne water, no adequate security and all that concerns our president is to change to the old national anthem. Why did they not return to driving on the left and replace our flag with the Union Jack to booth. What a degeneration into dictatorship.

It’s wrong to allow alleged defendant to make public statement without formal and proper legal advice prior to admitting an alleged offence. It’s improper to encourage trial via public press other than the courts. It is important to reiterate that the Defendant’s admission of committing an alleged offence via public media without due court process tells a story about access to proper legal advice and access to justice in Nigeria. Access to justice matters for every citizen.

The change of the national anthem was hushly done. The president wanted it done, so its done. I hope he will also save Nigeria from hunger, starvation, and underdevelopment. National assembly, please start doing what we put you there to do. This is uncalled for.

"A British woman composed it in 1960 at Independence. The British govt did not write the anthem. The contest was thrown open and people from all over the world, including Nigeria, Africa, the Caribbean, USA, UK etc sent in their proposed anthems, and a panel of judges which included Nigerians, selected 'Nigeria We Hail Thee', which was sent in by an English woman. THAT became the anthem...@african-history-fountain

What do Nigerians expect to get when they elected or selected a great grand father as a president ? He has to go back to ages of his youth time even when his grandchildren won't even understand his reason for asking them to go back to Stone Age .

If we can go back to the old anthem, please let's equally lower the green-white-green national flag for that of the UK; it might equally inspire more hope and ensure the progression of our economy and magically resolve all other prevalent societal issues..

Shame of a Nation. Our elected officials don't recite the Nation anthem in public gatherings only the people do. The joint section of the National assembly just demonstrated this point.

It's quite sad that while African countries like Rwanda, Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea are working hard to break the umbilical cord that held them bond to their colonial masters, Bat - in an attempt to distract Nigerians and divert attention from the poor performance of his one year in office - have gone back to realign and strengthen the colonial cord that our past heroes risked their lives to break.
