This case is super easy to both print and assemble. It's also fairly cheap to print as it's using only 0.7kg of filament.
** A front panel version without the logo is also added to Printables in case you'd like the build to be 100% honeycomb or other pattern of your choice.
* Do you have a project idea that you're unable to fulfill by yourself, feel free to let me know down in the comments and maybe YOUR idea could become a reality in one of my future videos!
PS: It can be anything, it doesn't have to be a PC case. *
** What's required to build this case?
1 KG 3D printer filament (PETG recommended): amzn.to/3M0yD6F
Hot glue gun (recommended for magnets): amzn.to/3RTT7C0
5x - M3 threaded inserts: amzn.to/3S6hyMq
5x - M3x10mm machine screws: amzn.to/46R5ov4
8x - 8*3mm Neodymium magnets: amzn.to/3M254C1
12mm Power Button (Pre-wired): amzn.to/3S163Go
** PC components I used to build this case:
ASUS ROG B450i ITX motherboard (AM4 socket, same model not available, but here are some options): amzn.to/46vQhrp
Corsair SF450 SFX power supply: amzn.to/3QgJz2H
Gigabyte 1660 Super ITX (not available new anymore, this one is similar size but better): amzn.to/45AmuMK
Kingston A2000 M.2 SSD 250GB + 1TB: amzn.to/40brCWR

Not realistic really, all the parts would need to be made with a cnc and the magnets would not be a thing since the weight of the panels
@makerunit
@makerunit 10 ай бұрын
@@yeetmeister0704 mass produced can mean a lot of things. Noone mentioned that it would have been made out of lead or gold. (Which is heavy) If it was aluminium the weight and perforation in the panels like this it wouldn’t really be an issue. Also the panels are supported both at the top and bottom meaning not much weight is actually on the magnets. And I’d agree that to make it manufacturable in metal it’d need a few design changes but that wasn’t the point here, the point was the «style» of case, not this exact design. 😊

I think a micto ATX case which can fit relatively long 3 slot GPU while being as compact as possible (with SFX-L PSU compatibility, if not just SFX) would be ideal next! Also, would really love to see a tutorial video for your process in Shapr3D would be great :)
@makerunit

By using the upper PCIE slot on the mATX you should be able to fit some very thick cards without adding too much height. The plan for the «M» size is to add support for ATX and SFX psu’s (up to 140mm depth) which should be sufficient for most builds.

@makerunit I really like an idea of your case. Small note - think about two 120mm fans on the front than one 140mm and make front panel slidable instead of magnets. For M size, you can take a look at Mechanic Master C26 layout since it fits mATX, 310mm GPU, SFX in 13L

Gyroid seems a lot like those cooling pads used in greenhouses. Water is trickled down these pads and the pads are wetted constantly. The giant fans are used to pull air through these pads, the resulting air is much cooler than the outside air.

I didn’t know this, but that’s pretty clever! Might it be to also be create a humid environment for the plants to live in? Isn’t the purpose of a green house to keep the heat and humidity high and stable? 😊

@@makerunit Exciting! I've been in the 3D printed game for a long time, actually had a print farm during the pandemic, prusa minis and adventurer 3s. @@jarethgar that’s awesome! Never tried a Prusa myself. I’m currently using a Creality K1 Max, and in the beginning it was a little trouble but that’s due to the machine not being properly tuned from factory. So after some frustrating tuning I finally got it right. Actually it has never failed on me so far (after my tuning) apart from some tiny imperfections in the first layer from time to time, after hundreds of hours of printing, but generally I’m pleased. I’ll probably get their new K2 when it releases due to the 350x350mm build plate. It would open so many new doors. Then I could actually even make a 6-piece full size ATX case without splitting panels.
@jarethgar
@jarethgar 4 ай бұрын
@@makerunit I actually had a Creality K1 Max, but I read on Reddit that they were shipping some units with a messed up extruder/hotend. Unfortunately I was shipped one of those units and the printer did not have the "out of the box functionality" I was craving. But for the price+build size it was definitely tempting, I just did not have the time to fiddle with it. I'm glad you were able to make it work, and I'm sure it is fine with a little TLC. Also who knows how well this Bambu Lab will hold up in the long term? I'm with you on the K2+build plate- that kind of space would open up so many possibilities! I'm actually using your build to create an idea I've had for awhile- swapping out optiplex boards+intel arc 380s to make a recycled/ultra-cheap low end gaming pc/emulation machine. Right now I'm rocking a AP201 mini case, but it would be amazing to print my own 3d case for a bigger build!! Definitely looking forward to your next build!

@@makerunit I was thinking of: Motherboard on top, where the CPU cooler sucks air directly from outside. SFX power supply below the motherboard or at the side. But it would be better to have it below as you can use the space there for cable management as well and you can put a front fan similar as your actual build which would equally cool motherboard and power supply. And the case can be used like a tower or put down so that the motherboard is on top.

I see. I was thinking like ITX mobo and SFX psu side by side in like a console style case that could be used both laying down and upright. Possibly some 92mm chassis fans to keep the air circulating. Using 92mm fans on the side would allow for some thickness to the case too allowing for bigger more silent air coolers. I’d prefer a TV/media pc to not sound like a jet engine.😊.
@BlackICE1973
@BlackICE1973 10 ай бұрын
@@makerunit either it will be long or it will be thick. I liked the idea that the motherboard is mounted so near to the side/top panel, that the cpu cooler sucks fresh air. You can not do that when the power supply is at the side as the power supply is more thick. But maybe yes, if psu and mobo both suck fresh air from the side/top panel and the space below motherboard is used for cable management. But the additional fans you want to use would be smaller.

@@BlackICE1973 a solution to the fan being further away from the intake mesh is to use a custom adjustable thickness intake duct that will be placed between the intake fan and the mesh panel allowing it to only suck in air from the outside.

I’m slowly downsizing my PC as I go (moving from a huge case to a smaller one, getting rid of HDDs in favor of M.2 drives on the motherboard) and the next step will be downsizing from an ATX to an ITX motherboard. The one part I don’t like to compromise on is the PSU though, and SFX power supplies are usually either too expensive or too unreliable for a quality budget build imo. Yes, the larger cases will help, and your 'Big Boy' may be a perfect new case. However, the one thing I could use is the ability to mix, or choose between full height and half height expansion cards. I have some spare parts, like a pair of DVI cards collecting dust. They have permanently attached half height panel mounts. They're not 'good enough' to spend a little bit on adaptors or a new case. But once I have enough leftovers, I'll build a machine, as long as the only thing I have to buy is a power supply. Great Vid!

then you will have to look for a printer with twice the print area (Ender 3 - 220mm, very common and therefore MiniITX format cases are also popular), while for an atx board the print area is already needed more than 300mm x 300mm, which is much less on the market, due to with a double increase in price.

Full ATX board is a bit more tricky than ITX as nononame here mentions, to print all the side panels as one piece it would require a very big print surfare exceeding the size limits of most common printers but there are workarounds such as printing in smaller parts etc. but it’s hard to get it as clean if doing that. Though not impossible and by integrating the joint into a part of the design it can actually be done but would require some well thought solutions for joining the parts smoothly. If you are going to 3D print a case, perhaps you could try to implement something that can only be accomplished via 3D printing. For example, most case sides simply drill / punch out holes for ventilation - it makes mass manufacturing easier. But what about a multi-layer, offset hole type design? The goal would be to allow for airflow but to prevent the sound waves from going directly out of the case. Air going into the case would have to change direction while traversing a path designed to prevent acoustic waves from exiting. Similar to how marine engines have intakes that separate air from water. Ok, actually entirely different but the fundamental idea is similar. This sort of solution could only be implemented using 3D printing.
@makerunit
@makerunit 10 ай бұрын
That’s a cool idea. I’ve got to do some research on this subject though, as I have zero experience in the field of acoustics, but that would be pretty insane. I have considered like offset holes on both sides (makes no sense in writing) and then up again allowing air through but zero transparency. Hard to explain but a concept I saw in a video a few months ago. I think the video was by «Slant 3D».
@williamdouglas8040
@williamdouglas8040 10 ай бұрын
I would try this out by making a case / volume from plywood - or some similar material that attenuates sound. This volume can then be separated into two different chambers by inserting a 3D printed divider. Put a speaker in one end and a mic in the other. This gives you a standardized testing setup for measuring just how much the 3D printed divider attenuates the sound. It would be a pile of work but could generate some great data to prove the effectiveness of your design. It also allows you to minimize the amount of 3D printing required per test. Lots of work but could make for a cool video. @@makerunit

great, i like your case designs. It would be nice to design a NAS case for 3 - 5 2.5" maybe 3.5" hard drives.

That’s true. I’ll see what I can do 😊 I’m only worried that a printed standoff might not be strong enough and if I do make them printed they possibly have to be too thick so they may hit other components of the motherboard, that’s why I’ve avoided it. Just feels safer adding them directly to the flat surface… but I may be wrong and it can probably work as I’ve seen others make it work. Probably me who’s just too worried 😅

A long version of this case that supports a longer GPU along with support for an ATX PSU would be great. If you could accommodate a 250mm long GPU, that would open up many more possibilities for more powerful GPUs. Also, a longer version has the possibility of mounting 2.5" and/or 3.5" drives to the same piece that the motherboard mounts to.

In a medium case you can use a full size PSU, the small form factor price are nuts here.

My plan for a medium case is to try to make a mounting solution that supports both full ATX and SFX psu’s 👍 possibly front mounted exhausting upwards.

M size would be perfect, as while it uses more filament, you avoid the ITX “tax”, since mATX motherboards are often cheaper and you could probably have those longer/thicker GPUs with no issues.
