I’m not majoring in cinematography, but I do miss the days when I made short films in a video production class in high school. Since my budget for film is small (especially as a college student), this is definitely something that I could see myself springing for as long as there’s not any better options under $300. Thank you for this video, it makes me want to go out and start making videos of my own!

Glad to see this camera get some love. I don't shoot Canon any more, but when I did, I used an EOS-M as my b-cam. Image quality is very solid and I think the portability makes it a ton of fun to use; I'd often grab it when I went on a hike or bike ride, just to have a good camera with me. The few Canon M lenses out there are actually quite nice and you can get a fairly inexpensive adapter that will let you use EF lenses with full electronic controls. It's a great budget option!
@PaulHarwood8567 жыл бұрын
If you shoot raw video on the EOS-M, I recommend purchasing a Sandisk 95 MB/SEC SD Card. There’s also a build on the experiments page on Magic Lantern’s site for 4K like the the Canon 5D Mark III. Make sure to research the forum before trying that build, and always remember to take the battery out if the camera hangs up! Always works. I shoot Magic Lantern on the Canon 7D and Canon T3i and have never had my camera bricked. Knock on wood, but honestly just take out the battery if something goes wrong, turn off the camera, and never take the memory card out while the camera is on!
@geb191 Жыл бұрын
Hello. When you use magic lantern in t3i, how much time can you record 4K? Does it depend on the sad card speed? Because I heard even if it’s a fast sad card the camera has its limitations. I’m thinking about buying one, but I’m not sure because of that…. Thank you.
@PaulHarwood856 Жыл бұрын
@@geb191 Hello Emile the T3i has a bottleneck of 21 mb /sec and the SD Overclock hack doesn't work for this camera to my knowledge. I've read online there is a new Crop Mood build which lets you view framing in color when shooting in crop mode. I believe the T4i and T5i work for this. Honestly though, I've read the T series cameras after the T3i have focus pixels issues in raw and compressed H.264 recording video. I love the 7D, but honestly if you can I would go with the 5D Mark III. There's development for the 5D Mark II, but I would save more and go with the Mark III. This camera shoots raw video at 5.7K without a crop and the footage is gorgeous. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I'll do my best to answer them. - Paul

The EOS-M's own 22mm EF-M f/2.0 lens is very good. @Dr.TJ_Eckleburg2 жыл бұрын
@@hammies4jayjay Generally speaking, yes definitely. It depends on what you want to do of course, but this camera is extremely useful to me and I use it constantly. I'd say that if your primary need is photography with a little bit of video there may be better, more modern options for you that will give better flexibility at a similar price point. But if your need is mostly video and you want a filmic, cinema look from an inexpensive camera, it's hard to argue with the results this camera can offer, especially with Technicolor Cinestyle loaded into the firmware. Unless you absolutely must record video in raw or 4k, this thing will give you a look you can only get from much more expensive cinema setups.

Hi, how similar is the raw footage between bmcc 2.5k and canon m?
@Dr.TJ_Eckleburg2 жыл бұрын
@@geekdelmetal The BMCC is way above it. It's a real cinema camera. The Canon is very impressive but it can't shoot raw or prores video, so the video files will always have some compression on them, and will be lower resolution. That's perfectly fine but in comparison to the BMCC there is a difference. The BMCC also has brilliant dynamic range that the Canon comes impressively close to, but the BMCC is superior there too. The Canon does actually have a larger sensor, so you'll get a bigger frame out of the Canon and slightly better bokeh effects, so that's a plus. And it's much more compact and easier to use, with a lot more versatility. Both give a very filmic look when used properly. If you use the right lenses and post production you can mix footage between them. But just a pure side-by-side comparison and the BMCC will look better.

The brand is R.J. Camera on eBay. I think it sells for around hundred dollars. Be aware of one big concern with it: While the RJ Camera Turbo focal reducer is good quality and gives you the full frame look -- the adapter I got years ago had flare issues (purple spot in the center) with certain lens combinations and how you are shooting or if you need a hood etc. Hopefully the RJ Turbo guys have improved their product, but make sure there is a good return policy if you are not happy.

The speedbooster would actually make your lens faster, so say the 24-70 f/4 would become an f/2.8 (I think). This would give you an extra stop of light and a shallower depth of field. It would also make your field of view wider, making it easier to use longer lenses for portrait style shots to get that nice facial compression. It's close to having a full frame camera.

If you want continuous recording you need the best SD card you can afford. On many DSLRs, just switching from class 10 to class 12 or UHS remove the "30 minutes wall" easily.
@naohwatson8546 жыл бұрын
Jas Bataille The 30minutes wall is due to tax regulation in EU, not due to SD card performance.

Is it only me who thinks that lens is total crap?! Look at the edges.... Looks like you can do only "center" composition, otherwise your subject will just blur out :D
@MrBlakesonny7 жыл бұрын
Martin Chapčák while I think it's a neat effect, you definitley have a point. For this setup I would recommend getting an adapter for the old FD mount and using vintage canon lenses. My local camera store sells used film glass for $30 apiece without regard to the lens or it's condition (unless its something like the 55 1.2).
@Arcanineisthebest6 жыл бұрын
It's not a good all-rounder or kit lens for sure, but the blur edges give whatever is in the center more separation in a very organic way that you can't fake in post. I have a couple of old cheap lenses that I basically use for one-point-perspective or center shorts here and there, and that has made my work stand out. Yes, these lenses only have one purpose and one kind of shot, but they do that really, really well (and they are less than 50 bucks).
@MrBlakesonny6 жыл бұрын
Arcanineisthebest that's a great point, when you pay $30 for a lens it doesn't have to be the one you use every day as long as it looks nice for some situations.

He had the lens at 1.6 he said it in the video... u want clearer edges open it up to about 8... it’s not a fixed 1.6 I’m assuming.

i have this as a great set up for a 3rd camera for my 70Ds. You can get a meike 35mm lens as well as a rokinon fish eye that looks really great as well. If you have the EF adapter you get the nifty 50 on here. People are all about the 4k and we all need to get there but, for quick concept shoots to upload its a great kit. One additional note: I picked up a hard case at harbor freight (apache 4800) for a good price that let me make a real travel case with glass, camera, light rig, batteries, cards.

That's a decent setup, usually these type of videos end up ballooning into some expensive add-ons but this one was really helpful!

Really great video !! Shows what you can do with next to nothing. You could also throw a hand held stabiliser to help with the jitter, but the footage you got is really cool there. Almost has a slight retro cinema feel. Thumbs up from me

I love this camera. I don't know all the tips and tricks for the camera. But it works great for what I use it for. You did a great review. The size and cost for this camera compared to some of the other cameras my friends use, make it that much more worth it. Portability equals convenience. You will use it more, because it is easier to carry and bring it with you.

Great tips to maximising the EOS M. I picked one up with a 22mm EF-M f/2.0 lens a year ago at 150USD. Been using it for my channel doing smartphone reviews. Still learning along the way but it's a great beginners' video camera. My only gripe is the continuous autofocus which is pretty slow, and refocuses quite a bit.

*Thanks Caleb, this is one of my most favorite KZbin videos that I've watched many times! I just received an EOS M2 for $144, no tax and no shipping fees, and I have an EOS M arriving in a week or so, which I got for $123 ($140.00 with tax and shipping) in an Ebay auction! I deeply appreciate you, and best wishes to you and your family. Happy New Year!*

OMG I love those videos of your son, the colours, the DoF, running though the leaves. I have an EOS-M I was about to put on eBay (i bough the M5 recently) and you know, magic latern and getting that F1.6 seems pretty attractive now :)
@andrewmcallisterdotca6 жыл бұрын
I too really liked the video quality of the EOS-M, and if you want to totally rely on manual focus, then it’s a good kit. The Achilles heel of this camera is the autofocus which is just diabolically bad. I thought it wouldn’t be an issue but if you use it for stills or video with autofocus, you will find yourself looking to Sony or Fuji for solace.

Bought one today for 95 euros with Meike ring. Can't wait to learn more and play with 50mm 1.8 and 18-55 lens. Thank you!
