New things can feel like too much, simply because they are the unknown. Your garden doesn't have to be "complete" this year or any year. It is a blank canvas, and that is both exciting and overwhelming. Just do what you do this year, enjoy it. Then add to it as you want to. And, shrubs are good garden plants, don't forget about them. Beautiful and low maintenance space fillers that add to the structure. Don't look at the whole thing. Just enjoy the process.

I am so very sorry about your Dad, but glad that you can still have happy moments with him. My husband has Alzheimer's. It is indeed a cruel disease, but I treasure this time because for now, he does still know and love me. I've adored Jo Stafford since childhood--her voice is so intensely pure and sweet. Absolutely perfect pitch, such a rare gift. Husband loves the old music too, and he's always happy when I sing for him, so I think it's lovely that you are learning songs for your Dad! "You Belong To Me" and "Haunted Heart" are two of her very best. Many years ago I met a wonderful jazz musician named Charlie Haden at a friend's party and had a memorable conversation with him about Jo Stafford. He too was a huge fan and had recorded a tribute to her--a gorgeous six minute meditation on "Haunted Heart," followed by Jo's original recording. It's utterly romantic. I loved your take on travelling on your own. So often others, as well as ourselves, may worry about being 'alone', but you are so very right that travelling alone opens doors to observations, meeting people and generally absorbing more than when travelling with others. Thank you for the reminder 🙂 When I feel overwhelmed by my garden, I take a cup of tea into it and sit and absorb. No plans, no expectations. I let the garden talk to me, tell me what it would like done next. It's amazing how a simple moment like this can calm, soothe and open the eyes to possibilities and plans.

I was going to say you were adorable. But reading the comments someone said you are Lovely and I think it is very fitting to describe you. And I love your videos. You are very blessed to do what you LOVE. I spent all of my young adult life as a caregiver. I am a 53 year old now. Taking care of my Mother, Father and my Special needs sister. I miss her. I miss my parents very much. But my Sister..she moulded and will for the rest of my life. Like your picture, and the story behind it. And why you have it. It really touched me. Your life is very appealing to me. So peaceful. I know at times we have hard times. But you live and do what makes you lovely. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece of your life. Your shifting between gardening, working, eating, decorating, creating, and playing reminds me that life is just like that and it's okay not to have everything the way you imagine it, or even finished, but the process of doing and enjoying is the true art. I was away with my husband last week and we stopped at a cute little thrift store. We found a fairly large bright flower painting and even though we had no place for it, brought it home anyway. I put it on a spare nail beside another bright flowery painting "just to look at it" and we both said, "let's just leave it there." It's too much. It's over the top. Our friends will laugh. But it's warm and cozy. We like it. I wondered why I suddenly thought this was okay and I realized... I'm channeling Kate. I didn't know I needed permission to have my home the way I like it. Thank you. Have a great week. I love your life. And mine. xo karen

Your videos always make me feel soooo relaxed. I can no longer dig due to illness, so for the past few years I've been using the 'no dig' method...cardboard layed on top of weeds, grass, in fact anywhere where I want to grow plants...top with soil, grass clippings etc and pop in a plant...no further weeds, no unwanted grassy areas, and a whole new re-shaped garden. It's a great way to add new borders, or smother weed filled areas. The cardboard eventually breaks down and helps the soil beneath it. Hope this helps you a little😊

I love that you are changing things around in your woodland garden, you are feeling that this is the right thing to be doing, and so you are making it your own. I love that chair you got from the Goodwill store, it is exactly the same shape as the ones we used to have in our lovely villa my family owned in Menorca, back in the 70s/80s/90s., and the place that I love. I always preferred to drive barefoot too! Love that amazing painted table you looked at! Love and Blessings to you from a beautiful sunny Devon today, and Jilly & Madge the beautiful black rescue greyhound. xxx

I think you should try using a recoil lease on Charlie. Not the cord string type but a flat ribbon recoil lease. It would give him a lot more freedom to run farther on a lease and you can pull him back in quicker than a regular dog lease. Happy planting Kate! And Thank you for your channel. ❤

So sorry that your dad has dementia (like my dad who passed in 2016 with 88 years, from speaking 6 languages and working at the United Nations in NY to helpless child who didn’t remember how to sit on a toilet, it was heartbreaking, fortunately it was really bad for just half a year). It made me cry listening to you singing for him. Thanks for taking us with you on those beautiful trips. Cheers from still way too cold Ireland, but tulips are out now too and many cherries as well. - How about eating some of those „weeds“? I think I saw plenty of Alliaria petiolata, or garlic mustard, which almost made me jealous, as I can’t find it here, it is a biennial flowering plant in the mustard family (Brassicaceae), sooo healthy and delicious, and a remedy against worms for doggies.

Love the chair and the needlepoint chair pad. They fit very well into your home. I think the garden will come together. Maybe plant some more perennials to fill some of the areas so that you won't have to replant and reseed everything, every year. As far as the table that you saw, I want that so bad. I don't know where I'd put it either but it was so cute. Thanks again for sharing.. I think your garden will come along just fine and again, you don't have to get it all done this year. Besides, you might want to see what kind of wildlife you end up dealing with before getting to carried away. Just a thought. I really like how you show your appreciation for the beauty the world has to offer and not dwell on the negative things going on in this same world. You made me smile while Charlie and his friend socialized and were running so fast. Goodness, to have that kind of energy. They were so cute together.

Several years ago I found a near dead rose bush on the clearance rack in the Lowes nursery for just a few dollars. My husband laughed at me as I put it in the cart. I ignored him, of course. After pruning, I had about 6” left and promptly planted it. That rose bush has now grown to 4 feet tall sporting beautiful red roses each summer and needless to say, I never miss an opportunity to remind my husband how foolish he was to doubt me. Guess who’s having the last laugh! 😉 Enjoy the process with your garden. Getting it to where you want it is the best part! ☺️. Side note: If you’re not following Elise Buch on you tube , I think you would really enjoy her channel. She loves all things vintage, boho and gardening. She is quite delightful, as are you! ☺️

Love being in the garden. I have been in my home 50 years, and just had to remove a tree that was 3 times as tall as the house! So now I have a whole new space to plant and decorate. A blank slate to a gardener is so much fun! When you have a lot of space , like you do.... I find concentrating on just one area at a time and completing it , has such a feeling of accomplishment. Then I am ready for the next vision and space. BTW ... love that wire, iron plant stand in the garden. I could see it filled with varius sizes of aging terra cotta pots... garden hand tools and gloves in a charming basket... a watering can. Imagination takes me away!

My youngest brother is a historian and we will sometimes travel around Indiana- Kentucky areas as well as up in the north country of Michigan where we have a cabin. I’m trying to purposely enjoy my life again after our dear Mother took her journey to heaven, and to not worry over so much. To just focus on being happy and content. Oooh, Ooooh! So, when you are filling up the plastic box to dye the spread (which I think came out wonderfully, by the way, it looks great with the wall color and I think it's beautiful, at least the way you had it styled for the video) there's this thingy hanging up right next to the plastic box as you are filling it with hot water. I am voting for you to get to take that home and use it for a plant hanger or a candle hanger, or something to hang and drape sparkly crystals and things all over, or all three, even! That thing is wonderful! , Also, the wire plant stand you have in your garden is amazing. I was in love with one here where I live that was only about half the size. I never got it because it was quite expensive, but they are such pretty things and having one for free is fantastic! It would look so pretty filled with white flowers! Or ferns, or..... Also, I think the way you changed your garden looks wonderful, that space is going to bring so much joy. Thank you for sharing, you are so inspiring and I always feel better after watching on of your videos. OH! Also, I wanted to say how much I enjoy how much Charlie likes going for walks by rivers. My chi does not want to go for walks, so he's always waaaaaayyyyy behind me on the way out, and then on the way home he's right by my ankle, but he's never out ahead, and it's so charming the way Charlie is so enthusiastic out ahead of you, but then he keeps checking over his shoulder to be sure you're still there. It's lovely.

Your garden is definitely happening! I'd love to see a before and after comparison, from the 1st video you made there and when it'll be more to your liking. A garden is never really "finished" per se anyway, right! Maybe you could organize a gardening day with a bunch of people who love it, and give back by helping in return (free portraits, etc...). Just a thought 😉

Hello from the UK Kate ☺. Someone once told me that you should just concentrate on one border at a time in the garden. And that included life issues too. If you can get hold of some, put cardboard or webbing on your grass/weeds to suppress them from growing. Much easier to pull out and dig the soil then. My garden is my sanctuary, make yours a happy place too. You remind me of Melanie in her blond phase ☺. My hero singer/song writer from the 60/70s (American). Now she rocked some fab bo ho dresses. Love, peace & blessings to you and Charlie ☺ xx

Such a Joy to watch your Uplifting Spirit, Creativity (love the chair), all the while sitting in the dirt with you as you create a backyard filled with color, food, and a soul soothing place to sit. I'm so sorry about your brother, I clean a house for a Beautiful Souled Lady who is taking care of her partner of 26 years...they are both 84. Just a thought for Charlie...I have a kitty who is almost 20 and I don't feel safe for her to roam freely in the back yard. She gets so upset that she can't go out, especially when I'm working in the back yard, so I'm buying her this pen (you can get different sizes) from Petco, and I'll cover it with a cloth sheet for shade "Midwest Black E-Coat Exercise Pen". Sending Peace/Healing, hopes to fill your cup of Spirit each day for You, Mom, Dad and your brother. 💜💜💜

I love your video’s. You are such a peaceful person. I love your perspective on everything! The wire plant stand is a killer piece. I believe it’s Victorian and quite valuable. Please keep posting! I so look forward to watching each and every one! Thank you so much!!!❤❤❤❤

Wow - that opening shot with those pink blossoms! I still have snow on the ground here, and there was fresh snow on the ground yesterday morning, and this morning it is below freezing! So just lovely to see all your spring flowers! Those model photos are gorgeous! I don't look forward to tick and bug season (I have an adorable dog too) but Saturday is going to be a warm day and I look forward to working outside in my garden too. I think your garden is going to be fabulous. Yes, we gardeners do like to change things around. And I love coming along with you thrifting! Also my favourite thing to do in a different town, but I haven't done that since before Covid! Have a happpy springy week!

Oh my gosh, this is my town! I moved to Florida a few years ago but I lived and taught school in Rutland for many, many years. The Curiosity Shop is my favorite store and I'm friends with the owners, Karen and Chad. Fantastic store and fantastic people. I have MANY items decorating my home from their store. I watch all of your videos because I just love your sweet and serene cottage life, but I was so pleasantly surprised to see my town highlighted in this one. Thank you! I love my beach life in Florida but will always be a New Englander at heart!

Rarely come across a weed! I've got some asters blooming next to my sidewalk, along with dandelion and purple dead nettle... They look so much nicer there than just an edged path imo.

Thanks for another beautiful video....that was so sweet about the music for your Dad. I lost my Mum to dementia in 2020, such a tough year in more ways than one!. Your appreciation of nature never ceases to amaze me and I totally get it too, it's a very healing and calming place to be, especially during times of stress. Sending love from Suffolk, England X

Sorry to hear that your dad has dementia. I’ve heard that playing music really helps dementia patients. Best wishes to you and Charlie ❤🦴🦴

Dementia is horrible. My Mom (r.i.p) had it. My Dad, whom she was married to for 56 years...passed away in May, 2011. She passed away 5 months later. She kept asking where he was. She thought he maybe had left her/ divorced. So sad. And yes! They often remember music so well. My Mom recalled every lyric to Christmas songs and Perry Como music. ♥ 🎶

Beautiful garden! Enjoy it and relax a bit about "weeds". Many are beneficial native species which the insects & therefore the birds, need as a food source! In many places you can just leave them!-- and enjoy the natural colors & shapes they provide!
