September 2, 2024. Brandon Jolley - There’s a specific genre of music that I’ve come to discover among the time that I’ve spent as Music Director and a touring musician: best friend music. Hooky from Philadelphia cemented the term in an interview they did several months ago. Looking back at the session for The Black Keys, no… Simon And Garfunkel? Wait- Illiterate Light, it’s clear that Jeff and Jake truly love the act of creation with each other. Playing together since 2011 at James Madison University, and forming Illiterate Light in 2015. They spent time together managing an organic farm in Virginia and used their summers to tour by bicycle. The duo managed to catch their big break with Atlantic Records in 2019, releasing their debut album, and garnering NPR’s “Artist to Watch Out For.” They released their second LP independently, garnering inclusion in SPIN magazine’s “Best Albums of 2023.” Going to their show at New Brookland Tavern, I cannot overstate how blown away I was from their Tiny Couch set compared to their concert set. The Washington Post wrote that they sounded “massive,” and going from the in-studio to NBT, “massive” was an understatement. Their third, majority self-produced album, Arches, is out November 1, 2024.
