Sharing another tiny demo which will be released in full length on my Patreon channel at / emmacolbertart
This month I've been exploring tiny paintings in soft pastel. Just how small can you go and still achieve a likeness? I might have gone too far with this one!
You can browse all my available tutorials on Patreon in my library at www.emmacolber...

Hi Emma, absolutely stunning. It is amazing how much texture you manage to pack I to this landscape and I love the pockets of dappled shade. And a beautiful likeness on such a tiny pet portrait.

Beautiful Emma, thank you for doing small pastels, I injured my shoulder and can only do snall drawings at the moment, so it makes me feel like I am not missing out😊

I'm just like you, Emma. Landscapes are the bane of my existence. I can draw realistic animal portraits all day long, but I can't seem to get the recipe that works best for me. Mine either look childish (not your painting, though) or very illustrative. I'm thinking about taking a few classes on how to loosen up and be more suggestive with the landscape instead of literal. Thank you for all the amazing work you do. God bless🙏

Great idea! I have a few artists I'd love to do a workshop with myself. Just to put my own methods totally out the window. It's hard to do, the guidance is helpful!

Good Morning! Beautiful work 💖 I left this comment before on the prior video want to see if I can work with what I have.“Hi Emma, I'm waiting for my velour and pastelmat pads to start my Patreon subscription with you and learn more about pastels. I don't have unison pastels as they are out of my budget as of now, will I be able to follow along it's the Sennelier sticks? I have the 120 half sticks set, I also have some pan pastels and the carbothello pencils.”

Hi! I know I am not Emma but If this helps, Emma has a few real time tutorials in the channel! You could try to do one of them and see if the pastels you have let you achieve the details you need and see if they perform according to your preferences. I know Sennelier are very very soft so it might be difficult to get tiny details like she does with Unison. I only have a 30 set of Sennelier and 10 colors of Rembrandt but people say Unison are harder than sennelier but softer than rembrandt if it's of any help.

I really enjoy watching your videos, and I am now starting to use more soft, pastels pencils on Pastelmat. I searched through your playlist for a video explaining what fixatives you may use throughout the creative process for pastels. I might have missed a video that covers this subject. How often do you use a spray fixative in your process? Do you use a retouch fixative in the early stages? And do you use a different final fixative before mounting? I’ve noticed that some colors darken more than others after being sprayed. Do you take that into consideration when 7:19 choosing a color? Would you use a slightly lighter color knowing that it will darken after being sprayed? Thank you for offering so much to budding artist such as myself. Cheers, sincerely.

Thanks for the comment! Regarding fixative, I had not yet made a video about fixative and then I was asked to write an article which covered it pretty well. Here is the link. pasteltoday.com/2022/12/23/using-fixative-emma-colbert-shares-her-opinion/ I'll add that in the early days on Velour I did use fixative on the lower layers and I would sometimes use lighter values to take into consideration the slight darkening after spraying.
