Tiny DSLR shoots like film

This is one of my favorite CCD DSLRs of all time, and it's a special camera in a few ways. The Olympus E-300 has a Kodak made CCD sensor, one of the few more modern DSLRs that's also not a medium format camera but something you can actually afford. Some photographers are really into photographing specifically with Kodak CCD sensors. I don't know if it's really THAT different than other CCD sensors, but I can say it is very, very lovely.
It's also quite compact. In part because of the smaller sensor size, but also it lacks a prism. It's a DSLR, but uses a complex mirror system to do all the work instead. It's quite cool actually. And with the 25mm f2.8 pancake lens, The Olympus E-300 is one of the smallest DSLRs I've ever used.
And I can't help but invest more of my time photographing with this camera. It's extremely rewarding and very fun to shoot with.

CCD sensors are passives, as film negatives are. They base on electron (fotons) stream force to give pics - electron sensors. CMOS sensors active are, they are electronic sensors which base is scanning system as in old tv tubes + noise dumping system.

My dad started an "event photography" business as a weekend hobby around 20 years ago. When the Olympus digital cameras were coming out, he bought them (he had nearly every model, at one point). We assumed he was stuck in a "new gear loop" and would never stop buying. But, to out surprise, he didn't buy into the M43 mount. In fact, he never bought any other cameras after he had invested in the original 4/3 mount. To this day, he still owns all his old Olympus stuff and still uses it regularly. He says that he is happy with the image quality and feels comfortable with the cameras. There is nothing new to buy, nothing new to learn, etc. The E-300 is one of the cameras that he still has in regular rotation.

That's a nice romantic, rose tinted view of his situation. I think for hobby shooting or non-critical work then honestly anything with 6mp and good optics can be really fun to use. However, to think that there's nothing new is just a little close minded. Absolutely fine to be happy with what you have. Definitely not great to be caught in that new gear buying disease. However, I think a lot of working professionals, whether that be in Event Photography or other realms, might argue that some more modern advancements in the processors and optics sure do make life easier, give less binnable photos and a raise your chances of absolutely nailing any given moment. I've also been shooting event's for 20 years and the thought of even going back to DSLR's from mirrorless gives me the shudders, the thought of going back even further would likely warrant looking for a new career. Frustratingly clunky and slow, no matter how average or usable the images were

There is something special about Kodak ccd. I have Olympus E-1, E-400, two E-500, two Leica M8 and a Pentax 645d. It's a lot about feelings to use these old cameras. Love them!

The images from our 1990's 6MP Kodak DCS660, based on a Nikon F5 were simply mind blowing but it cost us $48,000! We did so much studio and repro work with it that it paid for itself six times over in three years. We now use Fuji X!

You have inspired me to add many of these Olympus 4/3 cameras to my collection. Excellent cameras. Lately I went down the Sigma SD Quattro rabbit hole which is the most film like quality camera yet I have come across yet. Very similar experience to shooting film with really amazing picture quality. Love mine.

I use a BMPCC og as a still camera as the raw video out of it are a sequence of still PNG files. The cmos of the og is from Fairchild but not sony. Also very film like images.

​@@asadfarrajCCD (charge-coupled device) sensors were noisier and ran hotter, but in terms of colors and noise pattern, they deliver a look akin to film newer CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) sensors lack. Younger photographers probably don't notice the difference because they weren't around the older sensors when they came out new, but us seasoned photography enthusiasts have been exposed to camera sensors long enough to look back in time and appreciate how the old tech looks compared to new tech. 😃 CCDs have much more noise and much less definition and resolution, but the colors have an "aliveness" to them and the pictures have an overall emotionality to them that newer sensors lack. It's a real thing to appreciate and doesn't cost much to explore.

100% agreed. I have the E1 -E300 and E500 and love them all. The output of the E1 I like the most. I combined the body’s with a Panasonic/Leica lens with OIS. That lens is marvelous and with the OIS I able to shoot always at 100 ISO.

This setup alone, which takes away the need to use a laptop/computer, has helped me get back into the photo hobby, which like you, I had abandoned for far too long. I was able to keep practicing my color editing whilst in bed recovering from chronic pain and depression episodes 😊. Also, Lucy Lumen from "Lucy Lumen's Analog Adventures" posted a wonderful video recently about how photography helps maintain mental health in very deep and substantial ways. Great channel! I had the E-500 back in the day but sold it when upgrading to newer Olympus Cameras. Just got an E-300 off Ebay and it brings back that feeling. I still have some 4/3 lenses. The 25, the 14-54, 70-300 9-18, 35 macro and maybe one or two more. Getting the E-300 actually sparked my photography again after some years of other distractions. :-)

Fantasitc video and observation Snaps! I been into Kodak CCD sensors! SInce I bought my first Kodak digital camera in 2000, the colours would just pop, even though it was a 2.1 megpixel image. The Kodak C530 is amazing for slide like images. Bold colours and good dynamic range. I would say: Yah! Kodak had some good sensors in some of their bread and butter cameras! Also fun to just point and shoot! Thanks again for sharing!

I bought my E400 from new back in the day. Lens choice was an issue back then too, anything affordable were slow zooms… then Olympus abandoned Four Thirds. With poor high ISO performance (anything above 400) f3.5-5.6 was really limiting. I eventually got an OM lens adapter, but it was really hard to focus and found there was a weird colour shift. That said, I love my E400… a brilliant camera to use and have got some great images from it. There definitely is some magic with that CCD sensor. I do get a lot of hot pixels though now, however repeatedly using the pixel remapping function seems to help. in 2019, I traded in a super-wide zoom for the same money I paid for it. Now I wish I held onto it!

Something about CCD sensors, they are unique these days. I recently began revisiting my 6MP D100 and 10MP D200, both APS-C CCD sensors and Jpegs out of those are stunning and surprisingly workable in Lightroom as long as you expose well and dont clip your highlights.

Stock lenses from Olympus are great lenses to use. Other lenses are difficult to find here in the Netherlands. And when you find them it's very expensive. I use them since 2005 when I bought my first E-300. Now I got a hole collection of them. the 410 ,420 and the 330.and 3x the 300.

I have a Olympus E-400, I think it was the last of the line in regards to CCD sensors, sporting a Kodak KAI-10100 RGB. The model was just available in Europe, if I understand it correctly. Nice, little body. Am on the look-out for a couple of "upgrade" lenses for it, I have only the kit zooms, but they are quite nice.

Did you know that CMOS sensors predated CCDs, but they were too poor and lost the battle to CCDs. Only after many years did they come back modernized and "better". So it's possible that in the future CCD sensors will return again. I started with this camera, but at the time I didn't appreciate it. I pushed to have a "better" camera. Today I consider it fantastic, especially since the kit set included two very decent lenses, covering a huge range of focal lengths. I am currently shooting with it too and have rediscovered it. Hardly any camera produces photos so similar to those taken on film. All you need is even lighting, ISO 200-400, underexpose the photo slightly and then brighten it with the LR camera. A very nice grain and a film-like look is created.

Fourthird lenses are still fairly widely available here in the UK. I have 10 at least, all pristine and producing excellent images. The mft adaptor is worth having (cheaper non olympus alternatives work well) and although these heavier optics tend to obviate the whole concept of smaller, lighter camera bodies, fot hobbyists and collectors they're good value and great fun.

The E-300 has the more punchy raw look (film like), and fun body shape, I love to hold it, so weird and clunky rectangle, The E-500 is 95% the same image profile, but a bit more controlled, a bit more attenuated. Just a bit. You need lab side by side testing to notice, but you will notice if you have both camera's. I gravitate more towards the E-300. Just because of the body. The E-500 camera is more compact and lighter. The E-1 has the better image, no question about it, super beautiful colors, and deep black a real DSLR feel, in very aspect, it responds better in low light and high contrast situations, files are alot smaller tho. It's a different look, a different feel. More refined, like a Leica image file. I get the hype. But I could live with the E-300/E-500 only. A different horse. It is said that the E-300 was developped to match the E1's color science at a more reasonable consumer friendly price. The early CMOS sensors of the E-510/E-520 and E-620 produce punchy beautiful non sterile files too. (Similar to a Canon G1X, altho not as sharp, but I don't have premium lenses for 4/3 to test that claim :-) ) With a little tweaking, they will look like the E-300 (good job Olympus) And these newer camera's have alot more features, like functional IBIS. Live view. And better recovery of highlights - shadows / dynamic range, without the files looking flat or sterile (Panasonic, Sony). I don't have experience with the later E models (E-3 / E5). But judging from the galleries out there. You notice the image profile becoming flatter, more equalized, less punchy, less vibrant etc ...

Una vez fotografié una planta procesadora de bauxita para hacer alumino y los hornos producían un campo magnético muy fuerte que hacía que las cámaras no funcionarán pero la E-330 funcionó de maravilla y pude tomar las fotos, salió muy bien. You did an awesome job at cleaning that E-300 up. I still remember when you released your first E-300 video and couldn’t believe someone would sell it like that. I love my E-300 to death although I rarely use it. Will probably use it more once I sell off my micro four thirds kit. I would love to add one final lens to my current 3 lens line up but yeah the lenses aren’t easy or cheap to come by. Maybe the 50mm f/2 will be the final lens I get for it. Sucks that they never made a 17mm f/1.8, 35mm full frame equivalent is my favorite focal length so it’s unfortunate they never made one for it.

Fascinating. would be interesting to do an in depth review of it handling a color chart over various exposures to see if it produces non-linear saturation response like film. i've made some photoshop, premiere, resolve templates that do the same thing, (convert rgb to cmy), but burning it into jpeg would definitely save time. also, there was a digital bolex that tried to do the same thing for video, burn in film color directly into the color science.

It's good to know that even Fuji's cameras without X-trans, such as the GFX cameras, still have the same color rendition. It's not inherently dependent on X-trans.

I still have this old 8 MP bugger floating around. Any old CCD Sensor DSLR gives great colors, more true to life than CMOS gear, with some exceptions, think Canon, they've been using CMOS Sensors way early into the 2000's. It's never about the latest gear, xxx MP and nanosecond-fast AF, but some ppl only care about that, which is being insane. One can make great compositions with *any* camera, not IQ-wise, but from compostion. Therefore, i do love that sentence from Chase Jarvis for >10 years - "The best camera is that one, that's with you!" And he is damn right so. I do shoot since 1984, when i was little and a kid. Still love to shoot film, but from these expensive Film rolls into 2023, mostly b&w, which is also my fave style.

I like any videos - past, present and future - that you want to make about the E300. Getting the battery grip transforms this thing from a handling perspective. The sensor really seems to thrive on vintage glass - i use various Takumars on mine. I have a good range of native 4/3 glass that i use on E510, E620 and E5, but the 300 seems to yield the better results with the vintage glass than these other 4/3 bodies - it's 'painterly'. And it's also kind of like shooting film because the screen is useful only for the menu so you're never 100% confident in what you've got until you get those images out of the camera and onto a screen. I've had my E300 for twenty years. It's a special thing - a unique thing - that i will always enjoy for its particular qualities.

I managed to score the E500 in an estate auction for super cheap with the kit zoom. I got the same 25mm pancake lens on eBay, but I discovered what you talked about - basically any of the other lenses command ridiculous prices for a dead system. As such I just keep the 25mm glued to the body like a fixed lens. Hopefully I’ll eventually stumble across an affordable copy of the 50mm macro, which is the only other one I’d really like to have.

I got an E300 a couple of weeks ago and I'm in love! You're right about the lenses but I think the kitlens is pretty good and I also got a Sigma 55-200. I think I'm fine with those two. I've got other cameras where I can collect gear. This camera and kit is great in itself. I don't need more (until I find a pancake prime 😅)

Grab E-400, it has the latest 10Mp Kodak CCD sensor. It's also light and small. E510/520 have CMOS sensors, they are heavier but colors are also nice and they have built in image stabilization. Love them.

The difference in photos doesn't come from the sensor, it's just different post processing. Modern cameras are trying to be technically perfect and it often results in very boring images with the lack of contrast because they don't want to blow highlights etc.

I still break out the E510 now and again. At 10 megs it's more than enough for sharing on Apps. There's definitely something to the pictures that is hard to describe especially when taken using the Olympus 50mm f2.

I have an E-300, and I actually used it professionally for several years until it was replaced by an E3. While the poro mirror is one of the most dreadful ever, because it has an reflex extra angle to the reflex in the SLR, it is very dark and difficult to use if your needs are focus critical, probably best to move on, even if only to the E1 which also had a Kodak sensor, albeit just a 5mp one. That said the 8mp sensor of E300 and its bayer layer do make beautiful sharp renders, and together we pioneered pole photography, where the camera is mounted on a pole and hoisted into position before the delayed shutter could fire it giving the advantage of height to a shot. That and mixing daylight, tungsten light, and flash light to make some beautifully coloured interior renders with the 7-14mm lens which was the widest practical lens at the time.

Incredible camera. This camera and the E-1 are the REAL DEAL for CCD fanatics. Same Kodak sensor found in the Leica M8/M9 just a smaller version. I owned a Leica M9 and although it does produce magical images, i just can't get comfortable carrying a £1-2k camera around my neck all day. I must admit, i prefer the colour science from this camera compared to the Leica and i prefer the deeper depth of field you get with 4/3 sensors. It's a shame that lens options are very limited with these old 4/3 cameras but thank god Olympus produced the 25mm pancake. Without that lens, i probably wouldn't shoot with the e-300 or e-1 as much as i do. It's a match made in heaven! Small and compact, how 4/3 should be. Shooting with this camera is as simple as it gets. Aperture priority - f8 - manual focus - set the lens focus to 5 meters and just point and shoot. Auto white balance is great, images start to get noisy at ISO 800 but it's "CCD noise" which has a certain character to it. Jpegs should be all you need but RAW files do have more dynamic range. If you do shoot RAW, the OM Workspace app does a much better job of processing than Lightroom. Images come out a lot sharper and the colours seem better too but it's a slow process and i'm impatient so it's jpegs for me. A low maintenance approach is what this camera is all about. Ooooh, W/r to your thoughts @ 3:59-ish about why many of these sensors are filmy, I think I read somewhere that those cameras (esp. E-series), since they were "pro level" gear at the time, needed to appeal to pro photographers who were used to using film and demanded film-level quality (nice colors, good DR, etc). Digital, at the time, was able to replace film for less discerning casual shooters, but the pro market was still very stubbornly entrenched in film. It's very interesting! I love Olympus digital cameras and have been using them since I was 12 😂. The only non-Oly camera that can hold a candle to Oly's luscious output is the magnificent Nikon D800 😊.

Just re-watching this vid... and one thing i'll point out that is omitted. Two of those lenses you've got - the 50 and the 7-14 - are weather-sealed. I've got a 300 (with battery-grip, which makes a huge difference) that i bought new in 2005. I love it, but i don't take it out in the rain and mist. Along with a couple of other 4/3 bodies, i've also got an E5 - which, like the E3 and E1 is also weather-sealed. I use the two weather-sealed lenses you've got, along with the weather-sealed 12-60, 14-54 and 50-200 on the E5, regardless of conditions. Those five weather-sealed lenses (all purchased in the last year) cost me around a grand US, which is less than i've spent on my precious Takumars, while providing great peace of mind when the weather turns gnarly. Another film-like digital camera is the old Canon EOS D60. My buddy let me borrow his, which had a broken (but functional) display and a moldy sensor, and I couldn't believe the colors of that thing when I opened the RAW files. Took some of my favorite shots on it, and I'm coming from modern full-frame mirrorless and DSLRs. If you have an itch and can find a working one, I recommend it. Even with cheap lenses it yields impressive shots. 😃 EDIT: Nikon D50 and D70/D70s also have that evident filmic quality compared to modern sensors.

If you want to go full bore with a Kodak CCD you need to check out a Leica M9... Full frame 18MP Kodak CCD goodness with access to lenses going back to the 1930s.. Yep the bodies are still expensive.. but oh man those images..

Ah, I was eying one the other day. I think it was the M9. It was the one that has the sensor corrosion issue over time, and there was a company that somehow made it corrosion proof and resold them. Very expensive, but I'm sure it's lovely :)

@@snappiness Actually Leica corrected and replaced the sensors on most of the M9s some people did not get in on the deal on time and had to resort to other companies. My M9 has a replaced by Leica perfect CCD. It's a special camera, If anyone is thinking of getting one you need to check the sensor details in the firmware menu. Theres a bunch of stuff on line about which sensor numbers are good. The lens I mostly use a 60 year old Canon 50/1.8 which I bought for about 125 bucks. Incredible lens for the money. I like it better than my 40mm Summicron.. With the Leicas theres just a ton of lenses out there that work with the rangefinder.

You focus just as you would with any DSLR. The viewfinder is NOT especially friendly for manual focus, but I've found I can focus many shots.

You know what goes together well for a "filmic" look? Pentax CCD sensors and Takumar lenses. Especially an *istDS with an old-style TTL flash, so you can get the light exactly right at shortish to macro distance.

Love seeing your videos about this camera! I was so surprised that this camera could work so well with adapted lenses. I've got nikon and pentax k mount lens adapters for mine. I also just got a split image style of focus screen on ebay. The focusing screen was a major pain to install but really helps when using the adapted lenses with manual focus (although not as high quality looking as other split image focusing screens I've used). Also with the slow image saving and small image buffer you end up shooting it a lot like a film camera. Also love that it has a built in flash. I like to think of the e-300 as the digital cousin to the original film pen F since they share similar mirror design and lack a pentaprism.

while the 4/3 bodies can be paired with MF-only lenses for some fun, the Olympus 4/3 lens system is for Olympus diehards or for the really unique lenses imo. regarding the latter, the f/2 zooms, 150 f/2, and 300 f/2.8 have no real follow-up with the same apertures in the M43 ecosystem, so they make sense as options if those specs are desired. I use the 14-35 f/2 zoom with the E-M1X for event photography when I want to minimize switching lenses and as much DoF control as possible for the system while doing so. The 35-100 f/2 doesn't have the nice mechanically-linked MF of the 14-35 f/2, so I just stick to the 75mm f/1.8 and 40-150 f/2.8 when I want telephoto options alongside the 14-35 f/2. The OM-1 seems to drive the AF of 4/3 lenses pretty well, especially for their SHG lenses.

Greetings from Russia! I bought myself an E-300 and an E-500. Ebey is not available to us, but we have our own trading platform - Avito. We had very good prices, I bought these cameras at a very good price. I like the E-500 for comfort, and the E-300 for design. They shoot the same. I can't choose a leader among them. Therefore, I will leave myself both cameras. These two cameras with lenses 14-45 and 40-150 cost me in terms of rubles for dollars - about 150 dollars. This is a very good price. But now the old cameras began to rise in price. But I managed to buy myself many more different cameras from the beginning of the era of digital photography. There are also many people in Russia who are passionate about photography. This is all thanks to you and your fellow bloggers, including bloggers from Russia. I want to wish all of us good luck, and that all this madness that is happening in the world ends as soon as possible. I will wait for new videos. Thanks for your creativity!!!

I have an E-300 1. It’s not “tiny” 2. It can create magic, sometimes gives you “digital Kodachrome” 3. Auto white balance is iffy, low light/high ISO is not good, low light AF is not good 4. Zuiko lenses for this system are inexpensive and really good 5. Highly recommend

I got the e500 and the 2 kit lenses and I think the 40-150 f3,5 - 4,5 is very nice. The viewfinder on the e500 is very small and not the best if you like manual focusing, unless bright tellys are your thing. I have a lot of cameras - some newer too - and beside Canon 5D classic the e500 givse the best colors. There is not much you can do to better them in Lightroom. I hope the camera companies will give more options with built in presets in the futures like Fuji and Olympus. As far as I know it is more coming from the processors in the cameras and not so much from the sensor? Canon 5D has a CMOS sensor and I have also seen this colors in other newer Olympus cameras like EP1. Thanks for posting!

Hey! I just picked up one of these and I had a blast shooting with it. I'm curious if you have any tips for focusing with manual lenses. I put an adapter on my old Zenitar-M 50mm 1.7 just to see how it would work and it definitely has potential, but it's hard as hell to determine if I'm nailing focus or not. 1:52 - You omitted the E-400. That's actually the very last Kodak CCD sensor based Four Thirds DSLR, it was only sold in some European markets and only for a very limited amount of time. I managed to snatch on up on Ebay UK. It's probably also one of the smallest DSLR bodies ever made by anyone. It's a 10MP Kodak CCD. As for Four Thirds lenses - you are correct, availability is an issue. My first DSLR was an E-520, my wife had an E-30, I bought into the E-5 when it came out. I have a ton of lenses I bought and used as they arrived to market. The 12-60mm f2.8-4.0 is brilliant, I got the excellent 50mm f2 Macro (that one is easy to find at good prices!), I got the 50-200mm and the 2x teleconverter, I got the coveted Panasonic Leica 25mm f1.4 Summilux and a few other lenses. All of the Four Thirds Pro lenses easily beat the Canon EF L lenses for sharpness and autofocus performance - I got a decent amount of EOS EF kit with plenty of L glass - I can compare. Olympus delivered. If Olympus had shipped the E-5 with the 16MP sensor they put into the E-M5, I would probably still be using my E-5 for a lot of stuff.

Years ago I saw a dentist using it with a macro lens. That's why I know that it was considered professional camera at that time. I still have a body and a standard kit lens. I will be happy if I got a chance to purchase a macro lens for this camera.

It's a great camera. Those little Nikons were small but just as capable as the bigger models. I had a D60 about 4 years ago. Gifted it away to a new photographer friend after enjoying it for a year. I have to say, though, I got a D50 back in '06 after losing my D70 and I enjoyed its colors more. That sensor was better than the D70's in every way. I never stopped missing that D50. EDIT: I currently have a D70s.

The “problem” with the lenses is that some Oly MFT cameras can drive them quite well, and many don’t have more modern counterparts. This particularly has affected lenses like the 50mm f/2 macro (why Olympus/Panasonic have never released a successor boggles the mind!), 11-22mm (it was superseded only very recently), and of course all the SHG exotics.

Great choice! I love the FT-Bodies, so i have all of them. ;) Maybe you know, that there is a (quite rare) HLD-3 Batterygrip for the E-300. And there is one more Olympus with a Kodak-Sensor: The E-400 with the only Kodak 10MP FT-Sensor, before they switched to CMOS ("Life-MOS") to offer "lifeview".

Their 50mm f2 macro was the best lens Oly ever had for the 4/3 system. If there was more of those lenses (and I'll not count 150mm f2 I n course it was ridiculously expensive), I'd probably never abandon that camera system. Or at least not so soon. But at least I got a good money out of it course it was still fresh...

Yeah, i found the exact same thing here in the UK. Even the 25mm is very difficult to find with most being only in Japan. I have the E500 with the 14-42. Does anyone know if the 25mm is sharper than the 14-42? I know it’s about the size and 2.8 aperture but if I can’t get the prime, may have to stick with the kit zoom. Great video; thankyou!

My first DSLR and it was great. Stolen . . . but I still have the 7-14 which is super high-end pro lens. Cost $1500. And the Macro. Really hard to sell them as they require a box/adapter to use on M4:3. The reviews on both lenses were outstanding, flat field and sharp corner to corner. But the new M4:3 versions are excellent as well.
