I used old plastic bags. We wanted to seal the gaps because of bugs getting in at night. We were getting a lot at night.

You're right that methods can differ between countries (sometimes even between individuals), which makes sharing these experiences all the more interesting. Personally I've never done this before so I'm sure the work is not top tier, but I'm learning a lot in the process as well as doing it affordably. My wife is indeed a great help with many aspects of the project, including cleanup and most importantly, encouragement 🤗. We're located in Kenya🇰🇪.

In South Africa, it's called mkhukhu and people use ceiling boards then they paint those ceiling boards white. It looks so good. I think u should also paint ur house with white.

good stuff but i feel for 15k you would have gotten a better deal for the countertop on second hand items shop

Thank you for your comment! Indeed, it's not cheap. However, the 15k includes the whole counter, the shelves, and the table. It's a lot of storage and the mdf boards are usually pricey (4k each). I also did it incrementally which made the build process affordable and less tasking. We figured it would have been difficult to find something that matched our needs too.

where do you get the 2 by 1 Timber for the plywood frame??

Any timber yard would do. But prices vary. I got these at 10 shillings per foot. They are not the best but they got the job done 😊

I'm a Ugandan working in Dubai as a house maid. I'm sick and tired of working away from my kids. I want to get back home and put a mabbaati house of two rooms in my plot and hustle from home, other than waiting to raise a lot of money and put up a permanent house to stay. It's just that I'm a little nervous and worried, I don't know whether I'm planning right or wrong.

Hi Phionah, great to hear from you! I understand your situation. Wanting to be with your kids is a strong reason to want to go back to Uganda. Building a mabati house and hustling from home sounds like a practical step. Sometimes we wait too long for perfect conditions, which keeps us stuck. Just keep in mind that if your job in Dubai provides financial stability, you may want to balance that with your desire to be home, so you can also give your children the life you believe they deserve (I’m guessing that’s one reason you left Uganda 🤗). Trust your instincts, and I know you’ll make the right decision. Wishing you all the best ❤️

I agree! This required almost no skills to do. I don't have experience in this area but I've been super interested in doing stuff like this. Trying to see what I do with the house after a few of these attempts. Also I do these projects on extreme budget but there's always room for improvement. Hoping to do a new tour soon with some new changes 😉
