Another space-saving tip is to lift your furniture up from the floor. I installed legs on my Ikea sofa and tv stand so I don't have any big furniture touch the floor. Mounting wall shelves can also save a lot of space. You can surprisingly do a lot with vertical space especially living in small apartments.

Lofts have a higher ceiling than apartments and are actually really spacious cause of their industrial use and architecture... if your apartment is smaller than his it’s prabably a studio and not really loft.

My 20 year old daughter is living in Denver in a tiny studio with no kitchen as it's private student housing. We created a "kitchen" out of a kitchen island on casters, folding table and chairs meant for outside use, plus one appliance shelf. She has a full size bed, dresser/TV stand, desk and even a small sectional sofa that turns into a bed. Thank goodness for IKEA for functional, clever, cost effective products. Love your choices in your space, especially that mirror!

I'm from NYC. I used to live in Brooklyn, then Queens, and then Harlem. I moved to LA two years ago and I miss it. I've always lived in a small apartment. Maybe a positive is that a small apartment forces you to go out more because you have less space to move around at home.

The apt was a walk up in 83rd st between Lexington and Park Ave. We got it for a great deal compared to other apts around. Now we live in North Carolina and miss our NYC apt every day!! I have to agree with you on a few of your points. The murphy bed is a total game changer. As a grandma, I used the "cabinet" version of the same thing, so it's like a console the huge TV sits on, but can be opened up and pulled out for a queen size bed. The large mirror helps as well. With a kitchen remodel that I hope will be done soon, I built a bench under the windows that can double as a bed. When I was young, I had a few apartments similar to yours, and there's nothing wrong with it for a single person. Looks good!

2:46 it’s amazing how different cultures have different ideas about having a mirror next to a bed. It’s supposed to be bad feng shui to have a reflective object next to a bed as it is believed that the mirror “sucks the energy out of you.” I personally don’t believe it but I’ve had a roommate comment on it and it made me think about how things are so different across cultures.

100% my style- mirrors, really big plats, soft and stylish carpet, very interesting and tasteful art works, cool ideas like the bicycle on the wall, great splashes of colour like the bronze- yellow sofa, very minimalistic but yet enough to have everything, that is needed. Also loads of good ideas to reduce space like the wardrobe bed or the hangig bicycle (possibilities, that are present for it, are used). Tiny appartments are so cozy, when professionally furnished. Model boys always have great decorating tips. I used to live in the very expensive resort town of Sedona, Arizona, USA when only minimum wage jobs were available. I was also a college student. One rental was such a tiny studio, my bed was pretty much IN the kitchen. Weirdest part was being able to get things out of my frig without having to get out of bed. Took time for me to learn to sleep next to it, with the motor going on & off constantly. It was mostly one room, with small WC & shower in closet size space. But it had two large closets. One I converted into an office. I used a bookshelf on one side of my bed to separate a living room portion. I used a lazy Susan to turn my TV from facing my bed to facing my sofa, as needed. I used wall mounted artwork (mounted to hinged doors) that I attached medicine cabinet shelving behind for additional storage. Of course, making certain they were well-secured, LOL. Seems like a small space addition, but it was surprising on how helpful & handy they were for storage options. Everything was double duty. This place had a covered outside entrance, which I turned into another living space. I had begun adult life renting in San Francisco and developed excellent spatial living skills. Thanks for the tiny space tips.

@SABOREAME686 жыл бұрын
Erick I love your place, it reminds me of my place when I live in Greenwich Village ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Unquestionably, I also had a Murphy bed however, when the bed was put away I glued a large mirror where your handles are & it made my living quarters appear larger. Moreover, my coffee table had multiple heights therefore, I could use it as a coffee table, desk, or dinning table; I got it at IKEA. My kitchen was also very small but the advantage was that mine was in a wide long closet like, against one wall with folding doors to access the full kitchen. Lastly, what I truly loved about my apartment was that I was in the garden level, where french doors lead to the backyard where I had a waterfall, sitting area, plus a grill. Furthermore, during the summer it was a sweet area to get away from the rest of the world, or just read a book.

I never lived in the city when I lived in NY, I was a train ride away in Astoria at the end of the N train line and we actually rented the first floor of a 2 story house. The rooms weren't huge but we had 2 bedrooms, one became an office, a full bathroom, separate kitchen with space for table and chairs, pretty large living room / dining room and a sun room in the front (you could only use it in the spring or fall as it had no AC or heat.) The best thing was that not only did we have a larger space but we could have a car and not have to worry about spending $$ on garage fees and we could be mobile 24/7; the trip to midtown was 15 minutes away at night and weekends we could take trips everywhere and commute by subway to work. The con was ... we were not in the city ... it all depends on what you want.

This is a great video. Thank you for showing things that could go wrong with such candor and humor. I was raised in the Bronx and lived in Manhattan for 5 years before moving to the West Coast and now, abroad. The minimalist life has been key to my survival. I truly appreciate the Swedish and Japanese ways of being - having “just enough”. I’ve even been able to reduce my wardrobe while maintaining my style with a capsule wardrobe. Your video definitely made me a bit homesick. Nothing compares to the NYC Skyline. All the best to you!

I live in a studio on the upper W. Side; and it's tiny. However, I'm only a block and a half from Central Park. I work for myself and a lot of it is done at home. Nyc also offers a plethora of places for those working from laptops; the SIBL Library, Starbucks, and a ton of other coffee shops and drop ins that provide free wifi and charging. Most places I work from when out and about are only a block away at most from a Staples or something similar if printing is required. I have been in my studio for 5 years and I swore from the day I moved in I was going to install a Murphy bed. Yes...... They can be expensive. However, if you are handy with tools and a diy'er you can actually build the entire set up for around a hundred bucks plus the cost of mattress. In closing, I have the wall mirror as well and it's like an optical illusion making the room look twice it's size.

Yo doesn't this dude pay like $2400 for this place too? For people looking to save money or just spend less try to find a room mate or two. The Murphy bed is cool but if you're handy and have access to some power tools you can build your own loft bed for like $100 then just put your desk under your bed. Lastly, $700 for a mirror? People are in and out of NYC apartments all the time, check for lightly used shit on Craigslist and be patient. You'll find huge discounts on stuff for your apartment. Nearly all the stuff in my apartment was used before I got it and it still looks really nice

I had a 4 story restored 19thc home for decades but when I moved here I got rid of the beautiful home, my Jaguar cause I now walk or take trains/busses because a car in the city costs at least $1,000 month for parking and fixing dented wheels, repairing or replacing tires and paying taxes, fees and tolls and accidental parking tickets. It takes forever to move around the city from 7am to 9pm in a car so it was mostly aggravation I didn’t want in my life. You generally move faster in the city walking. I bought some great handmade Gravati walking shoes and some water proof Cole Haan shoe and long boots because the streets are wet when it rains and even .25 “ of rain ponds here. They are comfortable and I used part of what I made on the sales transaction for footwear. Most people who live here don’t wear 5” heels 24/7. My apartment is in a nice bldg with someone always in the lobby who handles electronic doors. Right now they also make sure you use hand sanitizer, hand you a clean mask and take your temperature. Even when I was sick my temp only went up to 99f since the digital show me to be 96.7f most of the time. Doormen don’t really open doors but handle packages, aggravated tenants, repair requests, and this week resetting clocks due to the time change and handling delivered prescriptions and dry cleaning. I have a pharmacy that bugs my dr for refills and delivers prescriptions every evening. They all do it with a smile. Most doormen are unionized so they are paid well to keep people happy and they are a security buffer here also because the building is like Fort Knox to get into and during Covid they rarely allow anyone past the desk or through the electronic doors. I have a bed, upright Mason& Hamlin piano(yes I play daily since age 5) and I also have mixed media art supplies and a midi keyboard that I bought for my toddler granddaughters. My daughter suggested it stay with me because their apartment here and home in Stratton, Vt are full of kid stuff including giant strollers and lots of sports equipment. I have a housekeeper twice a week for an hour. She cleans several apartments so it’s efficient and she only takes cash so does ok. She basically cleans my bathroom and vacuums and does laundry. In between her visits I have gotten sloppy since the lockdown. Actually right now she has Covid even though she and virtually everyone in our building is 30 days past the 2nd Pfizer year. I don’t think she has gotten terribly ill but it’s not a good thing to get. I had it last March and ended up in the ER at NYU Langone twice and paramedics gave me oxygen several times. I ended up getting a Nebulizer which helped considerably. You needed a Pulmonologist here to get many lung drugs in the Spring since so many people were already ill when things closed. I have several friends who died. One, a neighbor, was a Pediatrician that had actually worked with the CDC after med school. All his knowledge didn’t help a bit. Terrible tragedy. My daughter and family have been in Stratton since last March and right now there are lots of families with small children from NYC and Boston. With all this I’m not sorry I downsized and moved into something the size of a few walk in closets. I’m inspired to paint or play in this smaller space. Right now it’s cheap here because there’s nothing much to do.

Awww honey, that's not a walk-in closet. 😉 You have great style though and I love your tips.

I live in a 250 sq ft condo in Downtown Portland and love it. The location is ridiculously convenient and full of energy and the space is just large enough to have everything I need. I went for a bunk futon + bed combo rather than a murphy bed and so far, it’s been fantastic!

You're the master of living in a small space! There's a lot to be said about minimalist living. Everything is super easy and fast, which frees up a heck of a lot of time that you could spend with friends, on vacation, or simply relaxing. No yard to maintain, no lawn to mow, no house to maintain, no snow to shovel, no large utility bills, no large insurance payments, no car to maintain, and very little space to keep clean. Yes, the cost of rent is quite high, but you also don't have the expenses involved in keeping up a traditional piece of property. Plus, the incomes in New York are much higher. Not a bad choice of lifestyle.

I live in 735sq ft 1BR in Rockland County. I know... not (quite) NYC, and almost double the size of your apt. But still, I use some space saving techniques too: 1. My "couch" is actually a futon with memory foam mattress. I actually slept on it for 3 years in Westchester; but now it serves as a LR couch / guest bed for two. 2. I turned my "walk-in closet" into a second bedroom. I replaced the double-decker laundry "monster" with mini Bosch front-loader W/D combo, side by side. Then I built a twin-size loft bed above it. The room is just big enough for the mattress, and it has a window! So it really is a bedroom, right? I think it's now my favorite bed in the apartment; and there's still space for a desk or dresser in that room too. And about the closets? I use IKEA wardrobes in the bedroom. 3. In the bedroom, I sleep in an IKEA twin-size loft, with desk below. The desk is for my kid, the bed is for me. I also have my own (expansive) desk in the bedroom, along with clothes wardrobe, stuff-storage wardrobe and dresser. 4. I purchased a folding e-bike (Tern Vektron). Its footprint is really small, no need to hang it on the wall. But I can put it in the coat closet when I have guests over! I also have a Brompton; and believe it or not, both fit in the coat closet! 5. I agree, keeping it neat is key! So there you have it... I can easily sleep 3+ guests in my "1BR" apartment, and I have everything I need --- including lots bookshelves, books, DVDs, and storage.

My flat in London isn't much bigger than yours (although luckily I have a balcony and it's a one bedroom shared with my husband). You make a non-sexy topic interesting to watch. Miss my home state :)

I live in Miami FL. I live in a 10 x 13 bedroom turned into an efficiency. Nice roomy closet, bathroom and fits a full bed under bed storage. Also has a refrigerator and sink. Shelves to fit a XL toaster oven and microwave.
