We normally have had two cats and two dogs. The cats normally rule. When we rescued our last Golden Retriever and set up his bed, one of the cats went and slept in his bed. The 11 month old rescue was jumping up and down and barking while the cat fell asleep in his bed.

We have similar. One of our cats thought we had gotten a new (large) dog just for her. She treated that dog as her own personal service dog for 12 years. They both passed away within 1 month of each other at 16 & 17 years old.

Depends on the dog breed to a certain extent. Sheppard's are natural protectors. Anything they view as vulnerable and hwithin their domain comes under their wing. I've also had German Shorthair Pointers, natural hunters. They basically looked on cats as sport. The only cat one of them accepted was there before him when he was a pup. They'd chase every other cat they came across. But my Sheppard's never had problems with cats.
