Today we’re working on the corner posts. This is the first part of the Wedged Dovetail joint that joins the Tie-Beam with the corner posts. In this video, we cut the mortise. Next video we’ll complete the joint and bring the beams together.
We’re getting closer to raising the frame! Just a few more videos to go.

Chisels need to be far sharper. You are an skilled craftsman, your dedication is enviable. You are skilled in every aspect. Every tool. I noticed you are a rigger. You understand the physics very well. Sometimes using time is saving time. Your notches are superb. Is the only error I see.

Thanks for the tip! I’m sure there are many ways I could have been more efficient. I’ve been learning a ton with this project, but there is still so much I have to learn. Cheers!

What wood are you using for your beams ? Your big timber slick looks to be hand forged. Did you do that?

Thanks, Aaron! The entire frame is built from green Southern Yellow Pine. Southern Yellow is actually pretty tough stuff. The framing chisel is from BarrTools.com, they make really solid stuff over there. Highly recommended.

As a blacksmith who wants to dabble in timber framing, I recognized a quality tool in you hands. Thank you for the information. I will look into theor products and hope to be working on some hewing and framing in the near future.

How often do you need to sharpen your chisel?
@NicTaylorWoodworking
@NicTaylorWoodworking 3 жыл бұрын
Usually a few times a day, though I’m definitely guilty of pushing too far with a dull chisel. It only takes a few seconds if you sharpen regulary.

And is there a reason why you used an axe when the work calls for a chisel? I was shuddering if you miss hitting the hole, leading to a dent on the surface.
@NicTaylorWoodworking
@NicTaylorWoodworking 3 жыл бұрын
@@henrychan6593 The main reason I use an axe is because my hands and shoulders start to ache from hitting the chisel with a mallet for hours on end (plus it’s good fun). It’s good to mix it up a bit. Also, axes are much more accurate than they seem, but it doesn’t matter if I miss, as these mortises wouldn’t be seen on the final structure. Cheers!
