Tiny Tortoise Comes When Called (the original Taco)

Taco, the amazing tortoise, comes out of his burrow when called! We were in total disbelief, but the tortoise has done this several days in a row, and now we have video to prove it! Our itty bitty tortoise is incredible. UPDATE (Jan. 17, 2017): Taco is a girl! She is still doing very well and growing. Recent videos have been uploaded so you can see her.

This is not rare at all. It just depends on the species of Turtle Or Tortoise. My Box Turtle (who passed at 36 years old), would always come to me. And my Juvenile Hermann Tortoise knows my voice right away and will come out to play. But they are not like Dogs or Cats who can be trained. They are smart little individuals who have very different personalities. Your Taco heard your voice, and most likely associated it with food.

Dominus Providebit Water turtles, or any aquatic Turtle Or Tortoise is not for me. My late Box Turtle lived until the ripe old age of 36. I now have a 4 year old Hermann Tortoise. But they have all been LAND species. There is a HUGE difference. My 36 year old Box Turtle liked water and land. He was special, and would come to the sound of my voice. But he was an exception. Always kind...died directly in my arms. My Hermann comes directly to me. H e is OVERLY spoiled and needy lol!. Hope that helps.

Thank you for being kind enough to share. It is unusual behavior but we had a land turtle once,named Mr. O'toole. He was very friendly and would walk about the house at night. We laughed because all you could hear was clomp, clomp, clomp. He lived in a modified shoe box. We let him return to the wild after a couple of weeks. A real joy and conversation piece!

My aunt has one, it's like 70 years old and still going strong. Tortoises are generally pretty smart, and do display a degree of affection to their owners (and as seen here feel safe when they hear their voice). They make good pets as long as you know how to cater to their needs. As reptiles go, they're pretty easy, but you need to know how to deal with hibernation with some species, and their required temperature differs from species to species.

Tortoises are pretty much deaf. This red-footed tortoise is responding to the flashlight and also to the movement he sees outside of his burrow. They associate their owners with food and are good at detecting movement. You can yell as loud as you can into a sleeping tortoises ear, and it will not wake up or respond in any way. I have done it many times, proving they are deaf.

Amazing ! But I suggest that you protect its space with chicken wire on all sides and on top. A magpie or another bird of similar size can easily make a meal out of it while it is still so small... And it will take about 5 years for it to grow big enough not to be at serious risk of being eaten.

It may be too early to tell, but usually if their shells cave in slightly on the underbelly then it's a male, and if it's flat it's a female. This of course gives them more leverage when breeding. Just a little help haha

My grandma has a 15y old testudo hermanni and he comes out of his house if grandma calls for him 😍 Sometimes she let him out of his area to look and run around her garden. When she forget to set him back he always find the way on his own back home. He will not run away, he will always go back to his little house. So cute.
