from kaze's insane optimizations to sm64's rendering, to this entirely new 3d library for making games from scratch, I think n64 homebrew could have a resurgence in the future.

Damn, and running on OG hardware too! You are a wizard. This library is extremely impressive, I wish I had the technical skill to make something with it lol

As someone who still plays with compute shaders for vast particle processing, I have to say just how incredibly INSANE this is. Zero copy memory goes a long way, and the fact an N64's graphics unit can handle this many particles REALLY goes to show you what solid good programming can do

not only is this super impressive from a tech standpoint, but also the demo in the beginning is super charming + stylish

No its not. Just a basic N64 game.

@@CovenantAgentLazarusI think you would need to admire the technical impressiveness of this game in order to value it more and see it more as a fantastic game. And I also think not finding this intriguing based off just the game isn’t exactly a problem since lots of users may not care about the technical impressiveness of games and just want to enjoy the game itself.

Dude is displaying over 800 000 particles per a second, like a piece of cake. Sometimes it really seems like N64 was the least utilized system on history of videogames during its lifespan.
@guillaumefigarella170414 күн бұрын
its also what i'm lead to believe, it was a very "unequal" system, that can nowadays do pretty amazing things with nearly thirty years of hindsight
@desktorp13 күн бұрын
Pretty much the case for every earlier game system. The earliest 3rd party games are always primitive compared to the final titles officially released at the end of its commercial availability. By the time developers figure out all the tricks to push systems to their limits, they are forced to move on to the next system. Dreamcast possibly takes the crown for most unrealized hardware potential. 3DO was also way ahead of its time specification-wise, but development was painful software-wise. Later gen systems are basically just PCs, so the underutilization trend becomes a thing of the past.
@guillaumefigarella170413 күн бұрын
@@desktorp frankly i don't know much about 3DO, and Dreamcast was not hard to push, developer really liked the Dreamcast it was a much more sophisticated much less hamstrung system, it just died too soon, who knows what it could have done in 2005, i would be interested i think something like the Spyro games, Legacy of Kain or the Grand Turismo game extracted most of what was possible on PS1, while N64 and its totally unbalanced (unbalancable?) hardware, its programable microcode, is a whole other story of missed opportunities yeah there the Factor 5 games, yeah theres conker and perfect dark, but what homebrew developer have achieved on N64 is nothing short of amazing Maybe i'm totally wrong but i don't know about any similar project on this class of hardware, so from what i have seen, its N64 that hid the most performance under the carpet
@CovenantAgentLazarus13 күн бұрын
That is literally not 800,000 particles. It's 23,000 to 4 100,000, and it goes down to 8 FPS. nice try.
@RT55J13 күн бұрын
@@CovenantAgentLazarus you multiply the number of particles by the framerate to get particles-per-second. (this is fairly standard practice, especially with claims of a GPU being able to render [x] polygons per seconds)

Ever notice that when somebody on YT shows a tech demo off, that demo usually contained plagiarized assets from that platform or the same context of the demo? Ie if it’s a genesis demo it contains sega assets or Nintendo if it’s a Nintendo console? You guys can’t get your own assets or something? And why do you have to rip off the same people you idolize?
@hailtododongo13 күн бұрын
What are you talking about? All the assets shown are either self-made, or free CC0 assets. The demos i show are also open-source and included in the repo so you can even check the .blend files if you want to. (for the first part of the video, it will be open sourced in 2 days in part of a game-jam) This also includes avoiding using any Nintendo assets in general for obvious reasons. Since it uses libdragon as the SDK, not a single byte in the final ROM contains anything from Nintendo. If you have a specific asset in mind let me know.
@ironhell81312 күн бұрын
Iam sure you’re using some sounds from various Nintendo games like the opening vignette and the star pickup noise. I’ve heard both of them before. I don’t know if any textures were used but several animations looks suspiciously like links from smash bros. In fact iam sure it takes quite a bit of inspiration from that title. Iam not saying it’s entirely copying but it is not very creative. N64 games don’t need to act like existing n64 games am I right? Props on making it run fast on hardware.
