This was the best tutorial for quilt as you go coasters. I got the best results and have coasters I’m actually proud to display. I recently taught myself to sew, so your clear instructions with tips and fixes was valuable info for me

Hi Megan. Just wanted to say that this is the clearest, most concise tutorial I have ever seen on a quilting project. I appreciated your being so well organized and being prepared for each step of the project. Beautiful camera work and sound made it very clear to see and hear exactly what you were doing, The coasters turned out very nice, and I plan to use your technique for coasters as well as other projects. Well done!!

Also tacking down the strip is a great idea. I found many pieces of fabric were loose when I sewed strips on batting and if I had taken time for those little stitches it would have been smoother.

Great video! It looks like a nice, easy way to dip one's toe in the pool if (like me) you've never done any sort of piece quilting. And who doesn't need more coasters? (OK, my husband *claims* we don't need anymore, but he is so, so wrong about that.) The tip about easing around the corner during the top-stitching is clever. Not only would these make a great gift all on their own, they'd be wonderful as part of a full set: maybe 4 coasters, 4 placemats, 2 potholders, and if you have lots of matching scraps maybe throw in a table runner, too. (Side note - I used to be a spinner at the Renaissance Faire, and when patrons would ask me "What happens if the thread breaks?" I'd deliberately break it and say, "Dost thou mean as such?" They'd always gasp in alarm at that. Watching you deliberately cut your thread when trimming the corner, I finally understand the little heart attack I was giving them, LOL!!)

I really appreciated the hint to sew at 45 degrees at the corners. I am never able to stop at the right distance away from the corner, so this will prevent a lot of stopping and finagling the top stitches.

Awesome tutorial! I make bowl cozies but before I put them together, I use it as an opportunity to practice free-motion quilting as well as using up scraps (but it takes 2 batting squares). I like the coaster idea too! Very clear instructions. Thanks again for what you do!

That’s a great idea! I made a couple of sets of those reusable paper towel things ages ago to practice free motion. It was perfect-such low stakes!

Your idea of using the bowl cozies as practice for free motion quilting is a Fantastic Idea!! I am about to make some for c'mas gifts and the ones I keep for myself as well as some other projects for my house would work great for practicing. I guess I just never thought of small projects in that way because I use the special stitches on my machine. Thanks for the idea!!

I'm thinking of getting a Juki. Do you recommend it? I know a lot of quilters love them.
@TinyOrchardQuilts4 жыл бұрын
I love my juki! Its simple to use, has a great fast backstitch, and is nice and quiet. I'd say the downsides are definitely the lack of a zig zag stitch which I don't use often but sometimes you just need it and the needle threader. Its honestly pretty bad. I end up hand threading just about every time.
@Kera.S.4 жыл бұрын
I recently bought a juki and I am totally in love with it! I can't believe I ever sewed without it! I have the HZL DX7 so it has tons of stitches to choose from, but you can also switch it to a straight stitch machine if you want to. You won't be disappointed!!!
@thehouseofjane4 жыл бұрын

Since these coasters are 7" square, they seem a bit big for coffee mugs or glasses. Can they be used as hot pads? And what kind of batting is between the outside layers?
@TinyOrchardQuilts3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good idea! If I was going to use them as hotpads, I’d probably use that special thermal batting. I think it’s called insul-brite? Or something similar? It has a foil looking backing to help deflect heat.
