Hi Megan. Just wanted to say that this is the clearest, most concise tutorial I have ever seen on a quilting project. I appreciated your being so well organized and being prepared for each step of the project. Beautiful camera work and sound made it very clear to see and hear exactly what you were doing, The coasters turned out very nice, and I plan to use your technique for coasters as well as other projects. Well done!!

This was the best tutorial for quilt as you go coasters. I got the best results and have coasters I’m actually proud to display. I recently taught myself to sew, so your clear instructions with tips and fixes was valuable info for me

I especially appreciate that you show the potential pitfalls along the way (clipped corners) and how to fix it. We've all been there.

Also tacking down the strip is a great idea. I found many pieces of fabric were loose when I sewed strips on batting and if I had taken time for those little stitches it would have been smoother.

I love the tips you give us about the presser foot, what happens if we cut through the stitching, why use 1/8” etc. Thank you. It makes the difference between struggle and satisfaction.

Great video! It looks like a nice, easy way to dip one's toe in the pool if (like me) you've never done any sort of piece quilting. And who doesn't need more coasters? (OK, my husband *claims* we don't need anymore, but he is so, so wrong about that.) The tip about easing around the corner during the top-stitching is clever. Not only would these make a great gift all on their own, they'd be wonderful as part of a full set: maybe 4 coasters, 4 placemats, 2 potholders, and if you have lots of matching scraps maybe throw in a table runner, too. (Side note - I used to be a spinner at the Renaissance Faire, and when patrons would ask me "What happens if the thread breaks?" I'd deliberately break it and say, "Dost thou mean as such?" They'd always gasp in alarm at that. Watching you deliberately cut your thread when trimming the corner, I finally understand the little heart attack I was giving them, LOL!!)

Super cute. You could also bind them instead of the flip method. It would use up just a few more scraps but it would be a little more work.

I really appreciated the hint to sew at 45 degrees at the corners. I am never able to stop at the right distance away from the corner, so this will prevent a lot of stopping and finagling the top stitches.

I'm thinking of getting a Juki. Do you recommend it? I know a lot of quilters love them.
@TinyOrchardQuilts4 жыл бұрын
I love my juki! Its simple to use, has a great fast backstitch, and is nice and quiet. I'd say the downsides are definitely the lack of a zig zag stitch which I don't use often but sometimes you just need it and the needle threader. Its honestly pretty bad. I end up hand threading just about every time.
@Kera.S.4 жыл бұрын
I recently bought a juki and I am totally in love with it! I can't believe I ever sewed without it! I have the HZL DX7 so it has tons of stitches to choose from, but you can also switch it to a straight stitch machine if you want to. You won't be disappointed!!!
@thehouseofjane4 жыл бұрын
KERA SHERRILL that’s good to know. I can’t find a Juki dealer near me as I’d love to test it. Still so I intrigued though. I do quilting unboxings & other types of videos on my channel. Please stop by and subscribe if you’d like. It’s free and I’d love the support. 😊

Since these coasters are 7" square, they seem a bit big for coffee mugs or glasses. Can they be used as hot pads? And what kind of batting is between the outside layers?
@TinyOrchardQuilts3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good idea! If I was going to use them as hotpads, I’d probably use that special thermal batting. I think it’s called insul-brite? Or something similar? It has a foil looking backing to help deflect heat.
@marciajohnson51432 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your response. My machine is about 25 years old and the dials measure in inches rather than mm. I appreciate your explanation.

@m.k.15434 жыл бұрын
When you say “strings” are you referring to jelly roll strips? 2.5inch strips?
@TinyOrchardQuilts4 жыл бұрын
They can be any width! 2.5 is kind of a standard string width but since mine are a lot of scraps, they vary from 3/4” to 3”
