Chekhov is an excellent writer. In the past, Russia had excellent writers who are not well known in Western Europe (Pushkin, Gogol, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Lermontov, Bulgakov. There are many interesting philosophical considerations in this literature, very often unknown and incomprehensible to Western societies. I come from Poland so, because it's a common language group, it's easier for us, in addition, until recently, they were very popular writers in Poland. For the Portuguese, a completely different language group, many aspects of this literature may be difficult to understand, because many things cannot be translated literally.

Simplesmente fantastico, toda essa narrativa, Tchekkhov, admirado por muitos que o leram, um dia quero ler algo dele, creio ser grandioso, e tambem Tolstoi, esses Russos, são muito ricos em suas avaliações filosoficas, e visões de vida, e do Horizonte....

Baseado em obra de Checov. Se percebe que Vanya é um personagem muito sofrido. Muito bem interpretado por David Warner.

I think the problem most English speakers have with this Vanya is that it is largely accepted that the play is a tragedy sprinkled with some humor, rather than as a dark comedy. This affects the style in which it is played. I think this production is fine. Warner has a dry, sardonic, self-lacerating humor that seems ideal for Voynitsky.
