That's a much better option than the leather sheath I made, that doesn't have a retention strap. There have been several times that I finished hiking, to find that my knife was missing. Backtracking, I always found it hanging from a limb, by the lanyard I attached to it. I'll either remove the lanyard, or buy one of these sheaths. Thanks for posting!

Thanks Blackie. I just decided I want to buy an Old Hickory Butcher Knife. I mainly want to use it in the kitchen but that replacement sheath is too good a deal to pass up. I remember when you could easily find an Old Hickory knife at a resale shop. I have not seen one locally for a long time. The one shop in my town does not even sell any used large kitchen knives. I guess they are afraid someone may cut themselves while looking at it. I did find a new Ontario Old Hickory 7" Blade Butcher Knife at walmart online for $10.83. Shipping is $7.27. That seems to be a great deal. Wishing you and your family a happy and safe Christmas holiday.

@@BLACKIETHOMAS I found a better deal for the Old Hickory 7" Carbon Steel knife on ebay for $11.19 FREE shipping. I expect delivery by Thursday so it will be a nice Christmas present from me to me. I am going to really try to act surprised when i see it. I have to laugh at some of the comments for videos on the Old Hickory CARBON steel knife. Haha, several folks complain after cleaning the knife rusts right away. Of course it rusts, it is NOT made of stainless steel folks. That is why after cleaning it you should put a light coat of oil on it. I own a High Q Mora Kniv. After I bought it I gave it a forced Patina by pouring boiling apple cider vinegar into a tall container and then suspending my Mora into the vinegar for about ten minutes. I have never seen any rust on the blade ever. You can treat it then dry it and repeat another 10 minutes if you want a darker Patina or until the effervescent action stops.

Marsh Rat does some nice mods to an old hickory, what's your opinion on vinegar soak for a patina ? is it effective protection ? better than nuthin ?
@BLACKIETHOMAS7 жыл бұрын
it will do a good job to seal the metal from rusting easy..the patina no matter the method used is black oxide..( dead rust)..and act as a pretty good protection

I put a paracord wrap around the middle of the handle which made a nice palm swell. It also stops the knife from backing out of the sheath because the wrap butts up against the retention strap. I've even scout carried the knife and sheath that way with no problem. I know it's not a scout carry type sheath but a couple more pieces of paracord modify that.

Say Heah Blackie. Instead I got a Stromeng KS-9 Leuku. One reason was I found out Lars Munson used his as his belt knife when he crossed Canada. I also got tge KS-5 and a Bhuku STAK which is a copy of tge Puukku that all Olympians got that participated in the Winter Olympics that year. The Saame Ingenious People gave the smaller Leuku to Children at the age of 7-8 years old. Also to Women. Stromeng only makes that size out of 12c27 Sandvik Stainless. Same with the Bhuku. But seriously Blackie, The tangs are tempered spot on because I batoned with mine. I don't baton much since I like taking my Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe with my Leukos. O know Stromeng makes a great Leuku.,,. p

Only the blade area is heat treated on a old hickory. The handle will bend in hard use! I carry a Russell Green River 5" hunting knife because the whole blade and handle is heat treated. They do not bend!
@robbyritter42456 жыл бұрын
This doesn't make any sense. Don't you think it would be easier to heat treat the entire piece of steel instead of just the blade/cutting edge?
