When I have stubborn Corys that don't want to breed for me, I do a water change and add a power head. That flowing water seems to put them over the top.

I'm going to change the tank they're in to a smaller tank and see if that helps. I have a new power head I should add and see if that helps. Thanks

With regards to getting Sterbais to spawn. I have 15/16 alone in a 55 gallon, I remove(evaporation is too slow) about 1-2 gallons of water per week for 3-4 weeks, not topping it up. Dropping the water level, simulates a dry spell and alters the air pressure. Then after the 3-4 weeks of dropping the water level, do the "normal", slightly cooler water top up. Bronze/albino and pepper cories mostly just require a small water change to spawn but found my Sterbai wanted that dry spell, I'd almost say to "neglect" them, then treat them and it triggers them.

Unfortunately this method does promote algae growth over time.

I guess I would have to check the nitrate level too? So no water changes for 3 weeks ND then just keep removing water every week?

@@sunshinepet yes, definitely keep a eye on nitrates(after a few time you'll realise the "pattern" so testing will be less) as obviously amount of fish, feeding schedule, water volume, filtration are all variable. And yes only top up after 3-4 weeks, if your parameters stay adequate(why i prefer a 55g rather than breeding them in a 5 or 10g), if not, do top up/change water asap, rather than risking the fish' health.

They're in a 30 gallon now with those starlight plecos. I'll do a big water change and then test every week and see if that helps. If they breed once you think that will be enough for them to do it by themselves?

@@sunshinepet yes if they've laid eggs before, they're ready. I've had raised young that started laying infertile eggs(I blame the male for "lack of technique") at about 3cm size.
