Great video. I use tippet rings always. I fish mountain streams where I can only take one rod with me as I hike upstream, so when I have an opportunity to switch to a dry fly or terrestrial, or a streamer, I still just tie a fresh piece of tippet onto the tippet ring. Doesn’t cause drift or sinking issues with dries In my experience since drifts are not that long. I have had the same tapered leader on my rod for months.

good video but as a new person to fly fishing, I have a general question I'm not sure you covered. Why even use a tippet ring to begin with? I know it's simple but is it to just prevent having to use a surgeon knot to attach leader to tipped and therefor use up too much leader length in the process. Kind of side question... but do you ever tie flies right to leader or do you always run a length of tipped off a leader first then tie? Love the vids BTW.

If you use a surgeon's knot to connect your tippet to your tapered leader, at some point you need to change the tippet. Every time you change the tippet the surgeon's knot consumes a bit of your tapered leader, since the knot uses a bit of both lines. If you use a tippet ring, your tapered leader never shortens. You cut off the tippet on the tippet ring and then tie on a new tippet. No tapered leader consumed in the process.
@JoshEthanJohnson
@JoshEthanJohnson 3 жыл бұрын
@@crustybear thanks Crusty. Since writing my question, I've fished every weekend and always use a tippet ring because of what you mentioned. I've been pre-rigging my 3 flies for nymping and works great to just tie the top fly onto that length of tippet coming from the ring. One tie on the winter water vs 2, 3 or 4 knots. And now in the warmer months, I can see snipping off my 4x for nymping at the tippet ring to add some 6x for dry flies. Easy!

I have always tied the snap clip to my fly vest. When I need to tie on a tippit ring I tie it to the first ring on the snap clip, then open the snap clip and slip that tippit ring off. Since it's now securely tied to my leader its captive and I don't have to worry about dropping it. I close the snap clip as soon as I get the tippit ring off and let it hang from my vest again.

A loop to loop connection like you’re suggesting would be pretty bulky and probably lead to tangles… tippet rings are great for lighter leader and tippet as a connection point that is easily adaptable. But for larger stuff like maybe 10-12lb and up you are going to be better off just using something like a double surgeons or blood knot to connect your tippet and leader.

Here's a better idea than using hemostat on the tippet ring itself: Tie the leader onto tippet ring nearest the snap WHILE IT"S STILL ON THE SNAP!! Then slide the tied up tippet ring up near the snap opening, grab the snap loop with thumb/forefinger (covering all the other rings) open the snap and slide off the tied up ring. Close snap.
@Madriveroutfitters
@Madriveroutfitters Жыл бұрын
He has explained this quite a few times that the diamter he is typically tying onto, the mid section, is too thick to fit through while still on the snap. Thus the reason for this method. Thanks for watching though.
@useurhed
@useurhed Жыл бұрын
I always try to match the diameter of the tapered leader section to the tippet fairly closely. But with 5x-6x leaders, if I'm breaking off line, I may end up with a leader end that's a bit too fat to go through the ring on the snap. It's rare. When that happens I tie the TIPPET FIRST onto the ring on the snap, then remove the ring from the snap, close the snap, and then thread the leader through the ring and tie that. Then I cut the tippet section off the spool, etc. No dropped rings and no broken lines at the tippet ring from hemostat burrs.

This is completely left field, however could you in theory use a tippet ring to attach braided mainline to a fluorocarbon leader in lure fishing. I currently use a double uni knot, however every time I get snagged and broken off I lose a bit more of my braid off the reel retrying the double uni. My theory is that with a tippet ring, if I get snagged and broken off, it will most probably snap the line below the tippet ring, leaving the tippet ring and braid still intact. Just a theory. As long as I don't wind the tippet ring through the tip eye and break the ceramic insert

Random question maybe someone can help me out with... When using a tippet ring and split shot, where does the shot go in relation the the ring? I have seen people put the shot right before the ring and I have also seen a knot tied 6" after the ring.

I don’t really understand the need for a metallic ring on a strike/bite indicator line. I have used some a few times, only to watch the indicator sinking slowly and leaving me without any means of knowing when a fish bites. I understand its use as a faster way to attach tippets, but I can only imagine using it with a big bobber.
@Madriveroutfitters
@Madriveroutfitters 5 жыл бұрын
Keeps your butt section in-tact so that you aren't cutting into it each time you tie a tippet on. Not even for a faster way to attach tippet. A clinch knot isn't really "faster" than a surgeons knot so that is not a valid reason. These weigh next to nothing and certainly much less than the fly and possible split-shot. If they are sinking your indicator you are using the wrong kind or doing something else wrong. They do not sink indicators of any kind. The cool thing is that you don't have to use them if you don't want to! Thanks.

Much better to simply tie the leader to the ring while it's still on the snap clip, then pull it off the clip. You'll need to use the ring closest to the opening of the clip, of course.
@Madriveroutfitters

Paul B Not true, sorry. Most of the time, the diameter of the mono that we use won’t fit with the snap. That and this method allows for you to tie a much better and more efficient knot. That’s why he showed it this way. 😉

Why use a tippet ring over just tying 6" of tippet to the end of your leader using a tripple surgeons knot? Is it because it gives nymphs more action like I believe you said?

What is the purpose of a tippit ring. Is it only used to tie a new tippit?

Yes. So that you can add tippet without cutting into the taper of the leader.

Why not leave the tippet rings on the swivel on the packaging? Thread your line though the first ring that would come off the swivel. Tie your cinch knot and trim it with ring still on the swivel. Only then remove the tippet ring from the swivel. Store the package in your leader wallet. No risk of dropping the tip ring this way.

Because the mid material that he ties it to cannot fit through when it’s on the clip. If using very fine diameters….you can do that. Thanks for watching.

So this works great but when I’m tying on 6x or 7x onto a tippet ring, using a moistened clinch knot, the line frays. Idk what’s wrong. If I use a 5-4x it’s fine…. Not changing anything in process except line diameter/strength. HELP

do you use them for carp? and why not for dry flies?
@deanjensen2174
@deanjensen2174 5 жыл бұрын
For my 2 cents worth, the weight of the ring, however small, will affect where the dry fly rides on the water surface. The fly will rely on the entire tippet section floating as inconspicuously as possible and the ring would also be visible. Stealth is the point.
@Madriveroutfitters
@Madriveroutfitters 5 жыл бұрын
Not necessary for carp and Dean is right below, they will affect the cast and the drift on a dry fly. Not good. Feel free to call Brian at the shop to discuss further if you like. He's always happy to help.
@AirborneMOC031

@@deanjensen2174 First, I don't see a 1mm tippet ring affecting the position of a dry fly in the meniscus layer of the water - 18" or further away from that tippet ring. It's not a split shot. Furthermore, for the same reason (and from the same personal experience) I also don't believe it's going to affect drift more than most of the knots in a knotted leader - or the knot used to tie the tippet to a leader. Now, if stealth is REALLY the point, then I assume most of the people who actually want to be stealthy are fishing something like Trout Hunter flourocarbon in something like 5.5x or slightly heavier. Doing that to ensure that a tippet sitting in the meniscus layer and very visible to a camera (see the KZbin videos) as well as a trout isn't sitting there, being far more visible than a 1mm tippet ring like those commonly used for dry fly fishing. But as is often said: this is America, we're all free to follow our muses and/or the voices in our heads.

Yep. And you can use a 1mm tippet ring and fish anything but the most tiny tippets and tiny flies to fish dry flies as well. Maybe those as well, but at my age and my eyesight, along with the Westslope cutties, bull trout, and bows that we fish for around here, I have never had occasion to need something like a 7x tippet and a size 22 dry fly or smaller in order to fool surface feeding fish.

Tippet rings are a marketing gimmick by Rio and others to sell you something you really do NOT need if you know how to tie a Uni- Blood knot. They say you need this tippet ring ( at $.50 each) to tie a small diameter line to a large diameter line. But we salt water fishermen have been doing this for years tying a 30+ lbs. bite tippet to a 12 lbs. running line using the Uni-Blood knot ( search You-Tube for instructions).
@Madriveroutfitters
@Madriveroutfitters 3 жыл бұрын
Simply not true. They are not at all for attaching small to large diameters. Nobody EVER said that, including Brian here. We have been using them since the sixties, long before Rio was invented. Don’t use or buy them if you don’t want to, but don’t make false statements here on our page. Thanks.
