No music! Thank you. Great choice. I much prefer the sound of the motor and cutting tool. It's part of the instruction -- I can hear things like chattering or interrupted cuts. Helps me understand how much I can tolerate.

Another fantastic series Lyle. I've learned so much from you over the past few years and I want to thank you. You have a gift of being an excellent teacher and it's so nice of you to share your knowledge and skills with us. It's a shame they didn't offer a machine shop class in my school.

THANK YOU for NOT ruing your fantastic video;s with Music some can't stand. If you have ever watched Larry Potterfield on Midway USA do his instructional videos you will get chills down your spine from the HORID background music he has in some his background. It's awful!!! I have actually written him and told him how much I like and appreciate his video's but PLEASE LOOSE the music! I applaud you Sir!!

I SO agree on the music, most of it is either too loud, too long, too rangy etc. Everyone wants to be a video editor and the music choices often don't go with the content. I don't mind a short low key bit at the start but that's about it.

Definitely do the center punch, I've been wanting to make a heavy duty version of one for a while.

Nice work Mr. Pete I always enjoy watching your videos. On another note I think propane gets a bad rap sometimes which seems stigmatized. It's not really the gas but the torch that determines how hot you can heat things up in most cases. I have hardened plenty of small tools like centers with a small propane tank and torch. It depends on how much air or oxygen flow is allowed through the torch. Many people weld/braze with propane and oxygen tanks instead because it is cheaper than acetylene gas. Just adding 2 cents that many people here probably already know.

Lyle, a bit of a waste of Mapp gas in your hardening process lol . If you had put the work piece parallel and close to the back furnace brick you would have heated the piece up in a third of the time. Even allowing for the heat soaking in. Here in the uk mapp gas I'd very expensive, like about the equivalent of $28-30 a bottle. I bought my torch on a recent visit to the states back in March and I did not look at the price of the gas because I knew I would not be able to take it back with me. Then when got home I went to my local DIY store ans found out the price, ouch!! I know i can get it on eBay and the like, but its nice to just go to the store which is only less than ten minutes away.

Good point! I find music of any kind during this type of instructional video too much distracting and bothersome. Keep up the good work, Tubalcain. Greetings from Brazil

Looks like you had nice sharp drill bits. If you mistakenly drill all the way through, then drill and tap for an end cap. Better to be the man who owns two or three lathes than the man who wants one. You could case harden mild steel.

When making the toolmakers vise, you talked about the stresses imparted in the block after milling a portion of it away, as well as how to account for them. Does the same apply here, or is there too little material involved? Or is drill rod inherently more stable?

The narrower that flat is the more of the circumference will be supported by the 3/8 diameter hole in the body of the tap follower. Might be better.

I know you should occasionally reverse the tap to break the chip when hand tapping. Tapping attachments and tapping on a CNC machine doesn't reverse the tap until it has reached its full depth. Is there a difference in the tap? If so, why not use that kind for hand tapping. If not, what is the reason?
@mrpete2227 жыл бұрын
They use machine taps (gun taps) etc. I do use them sometimes

Beautiful work. Maybe a silly question but could you use an end mill in the lathe chuck as a reamer?
@mrpete2227 жыл бұрын
No--try it on scrap, but cannot count on it. I use it in the lathe to cut the bottom of a hole flat sometimes

Question: If I don' have any 3/8 drill rod, could a 3/8 HSS drill bit be cut off and used? Could it be heat treated? Thanks
@mrpete2226 жыл бұрын
Sure
@PaulSteMarie7 жыл бұрын
When you ream the hole are you using an on-size reamer or an oversize (eg 0.3755 or 0.376) reamer?

We made some very expensive and complex parts in my shop once. I think there was about 50 of them. We sent them out to get heat treated. They ended up doing ours on a Friday. The guys heat treated them and put them In a crate on the floor for the weekend. They didn't temper them because it was the end of the day and they wanted to go home. The parts were destroyed. It was very strange. They had cracks all over them but they weren't shattered. This is a huge heat treating company. We had used them hundreds of times in the past. It just goes to show we all make stupid mistakes. A very costly one this time.

Hi,Mr Pete, I just purchased a Shars 8" 3 jaw adjustable chuck, for my 12x36 Clausing, they do not have the Loo backing plate so I have to make one,,,I don't understand how the adjustment can work when there are 6 bolts going thru the chuck and tapped in the backing plate,then there are 4 adjusting screws that screw in to the inner bore of the backing plate, so it appears that the center of the backing plate must be machined under size to allow for adjustment, but the six mounting bolts would not allow adjustment. I enjoy your tutorials . hope you can guide me on this. Mike
@mrpete2227 жыл бұрын
Did you get the backing plate from shars? Is it designed for your chuck?
@souptonutsbolts92097 жыл бұрын
they said they don't carry the L00 nose style adapter any more, Please reread my original note to you, Thanks, MIKE....a neighbor to the north( Hartford Wisconsin)

I'm not following you. Did you watch mu vid on installing a backing plate on a chuck?
@souptonutsbolts92097 жыл бұрын
Hi again, i have put backing plates on non-adjustable chucks,quite elementary ,but this adjustable chuck seems to need some kind of clearance in the step of the baking plate for adjustment! Pete have you ever put a backing plate on an adjustable chuck ? (tru adjust) etc., Mike
@mrpete2227 жыл бұрын
NO, have not. But I have had that type of chuck apart--and there is clearance to allow it to move around. That is----it is a 3 jaw chuck within a 4 jaw chuck arrangement. Did you look at this video? SHOP TIPS #213 Part 1 of 2 Fitting a Backing Plate to a Lathe Chuck tubalcain

The worst music has to be nature documentaries. A pride of lions is chewing off a zebra's face and in the background is the slow, tragic sound of a single violin.
