The heated blanket element trick can be applied to a insulated fermentation box or closet for garage fermentation in the winter. Another great spirited video without the drawing board.

Great stuff! Thanks George. Had a recent George Washington Rye ferment go quicker then any other ferment I ever had. Knowing the beginning SG and FG was so critical to know all was still magical.

Awesome hack with the heater blanket and thanks for the new abv reader. Been looking for something lower. My proof and trails gives up under 20% and i want to make weak, flavored stuff.

Japanese fine sake rice is rolled/tumbled so the rice grains are small balls. I think that would make their fermenting go faster and better and allow the CO2 to escape easy.

That's an Amazing cleaning solution!... I've always used just plane old household vinegar... this appears to do the job just as well if not a bit better... Thank you, George!

I made a similar Mash heater using two Heating Pads taped to a 55 gallon plastic drum; insulated with a water heater blanket. I used a PDI controller and an SSR to power and regulate the heating pad. temperatures to my optimal mash yeast profile. Works very well.

I find that a jar full of white vinegar and salt (shaken) cleans the copper in about 30 seconds rather than waiting hours.

Talk about just in time I was just getting ready to clean my copper saddles and ceramic saddles in preparation for tomorrow when the notification came in for another video so I stopped to check it out and I'm glad I did. Thank you so much for taking the time to help me on the phone today George you sir are most definitely da Man. Jesse, Bearded and You are the only three that I subscribe to and you'll have helped me take it to the next level thank you for that too. Just to update everyone I could not believe how well this worked or how blue the mixture turned in just a few minutes. Wow

Sake is looking good George, I bet it's going to be great! I've been thinking some (since you've been making these sake videos) about CO2 being trapped in the rice at the bottom. It has gotten me looking into carbon dioxide as a byproduct of fermentation. I got to doing a little research and was reading how around 2015-2016(?) they were coming out with carbon dioxide scrubbers because of the climate change, that are able to somehow convert CO2 into methanol. I have been sort of research obsessed the next couple of days trying to get a better understanding of this. Initially when reading this, I immediately thought that somehow maybe excess CO2 in a mash could present more methanol, and perhaps a degassing before distillation may be of use. I gave this a try on my last run a couple of days ago, and found it to be of little change from normal. So I kept reading. Eventually I stumbled upon an article on the US Department of Energy's website on nanoparticles and CO2 in which they were able to convert CO2 into ethanol through electrolysis: "The team used a catalyst made of carbon, copper and nitrogen and applied voltage to trigger a complicated chemical reaction that essentially reverses the combustion process. With the help of the nanotechnology-based catalyst -- which contains multiple reaction sites -- the solution of carbon dioxide dissolved in water turned into ethanol with a yield of 63 percent. Typically, this type of electrochemical reaction results in a mix of several different products in small amounts." The whole thought of how much CO2 I have been putting out has been on my mind since my very first mash years ago, just a 5 gallon bucket, but I generally ferment indoors during winter. Now adays I ferment up to 100 gallons of mash at a time. Generally a 55 gallon (40ish gal) at a time, but sometimes two if I'm making different things. My mashs indoors always push a lot of CO2, and I generally try to vent it outdoors, but I have gotten to thinking maybe I can harvest it and turn it into at least extra fuel, if not something a little better, ya know? So far I have a 30 gallon bucket with about 25 gallons of water in it, and my currently about 80 gallons of mash bubbling away in it. I might not be able to lay copper nanoparticles over carbon rods, but I have a lot of pure carbon rods, a bunch of copper pieces of various sizes and shapes, and a variable power supply. I figure if I can turn co2 water into even 10% alcohol, I could distill give that a shot and see what happens. Anyway, I thought it was neat, and maybe a cool experiment to try. Something new, just trying to keep learning. The worst that can happen is nothing happens, I put some electricity through the water and nothing does anything. I've been reading a bit into electrolysis on a mash as well, and it seems that it will generally speed up cell production, and possibly increase alcohol production speeds as well, but at the cost of more oils and such being produced, maybe not my bag, but I thought it was worth noting. Anyway I hope you thought this was interesting reading. I found intriguing, and thought i would pass the information along. I know you like the science behind the stuff as much as I do. Cheers

Umm, just a comment on that ABV meter A small orifice measures/tests viscosity when leaking under a given head (as you said). Hydrometers measure density (as you said) Viscosity and density are related - but not directly and are not the same thing The meter appears to be measuring capillary action which will be affected by everything - - temp/density/viscosity/ionic charge of the liquid/surface tension of the liquid/diameter of the capillary channel/etc The capillary action is pulling the column of liquid upwards and gravity is pulling the liquid downwards. When the mass of liquid left in the capillary trying to fall is balanced by the upward pull of capillary action, the flow stops (and you read the graduations on the tube) A neat idea actually - quite original, in my experience as a lab rat Though I suspect that any particles in the liquid are going to mess with the reading

I took twenty feet of 3/8 copper coil and made a wort chiller out of it drilled two holes in the lid of my thirty gallon drum left the ends long enough to it fits into the middle of the drum next I connect half inch tubing to the copper ends it should fit on nice an tight connect one too a small pump drop that into a five gallon bucket of ice connect the plug into a pid control and make sure the other tube will not fall out of the bucket an presto no more heat problems works really well for me in South Florida. Twice a day check your ice water an change as necessary. If you buy a cheap pid you can make this very easily and cheaply. Good Luck.
