to clarify the entire calculator thing: the ap calculus exam has a calculator section on both the multiple choice and free response sections + there are just some problems where it's nearly impossible to do by hand (ex: the answers will be stuff like 5.914, 6.872, 7.082, etc etc). in different countries and regular calculus classes, it may be different!

i’m in ap calc bc right now and my friend took ap calc bc last year and he went through and learned each lesson on khan academy before he did it in class and he got an A+ in the class and a 5 on the exam. I started doing what he said and now everything makes so much more sense to me. There’s an ap calc ab unit on khan too so if you want to try that for this school year it might help you. Good luck!!

My experience with Calculus so far. Chapter one: limits, fairly easy got a 94 on the exam Chapter 2 derivatives: I understood the material but was sick the day of the test so I got a 64 on it Chapter 3 min and max and more deritivate stuff: hard I studied a lot and got an 88% Chapter 4 (so far): really hard but I only need a 44% on the test to pass so I'm chillin.

goat it's really not to bad as long as you put the time into studying and paying attention during class. If you did well in precalc then Calc will be much less stressful because it builds on things learned in precalc I ended up getting a 4 on the ap test and it was my hardest class but it's not unbearable

My calc teacher wanted us to learn completely by hand to fully grasp the ideas of calculus. The only thing I used was the basic scientific calculators and on most tests we were only given 4-function calculators.

you won't be forced to memorize the formulas all at once. they will all appear throughout the course so don't panic!

If you're in pre-calc, you'll learn about all of them one at a time over the course of the next 2-3 years (depends on what you do after pre-calc). In fact, depending on the quality of your algebra 2 class, you might already be familiar with some of the things on there

The big trick to grasping math is realizing that each new lesson builds on something you already know. Memorizing formulas certainly helps, but it's even more important to make sure you actually understand it (Ex. For most formulas in precalc, it should make sense why each formula is the way it is if you try to reason through it with what you already know. If you can't, then there's a hole in your content knowledge). I've been helping people in calc so far, and noticed that most issues people have in that class stem from algebra mistakes, not calc mistakes.

Yeah, we don’t have a calculator section. My teacher said that learning without a calculator really helped her and that we should strive to do the same because our local engineering school doesn’t allow calculators until like diff e. (Edit: I live in the Midwestern US)

I’d suggest that you take bc if you’re comfortable with ib calc. Calc ab is the equivalent of calculus 1 in college, and calc bc is the equivalent of calculus 2 in college

I took Honors Math Analysis at my school last year (basically pre-calc), and am doing Calculus BC right now. I have never taken AB. It's a lot of work, studying for tests and doing homework, but if you want to do it, I say go for it. It's definitely doable. Do not be worried.
