@JRCB77 It would never work. RFK Jr. is an eco-fascist who once suggested that any business that wasn't on board with "climate science" should be "banned" and "dissolved." Joel has espoused many times that he's not part of the "there ought to be a law" crowd, which is exactly the crowd that Kennedy is part of. RFK Jr. says a lot of things that tend to resonate with the freedom minded, but at day's end, he still has a pro regulation, pro bureaucracy mentality.

Joel, I've been watching, listening, taking notes from you for several years. Thank you. My husband is *finally* coming around a bit & our chick run is up & eagerly awaiting our first backyard birds. Mr. Salatin, you are very much appreciated for sharing your knowledge & wisdom. ❤️

There is a new breed to America these days. A French Breese was brought to America a couple of years ago. It's competition now to the Cornish cross. I have rased a few flocks of the Cornish cross. The breeders here in the US have taken the French Breese and now called it the American Breese for legal reasons because of the French government. Anyway, the French Breese os a meat bird that is big and has big breast like the Cornish cross. They say the flavor is incredible . They can be bred on your farm unlike the Cornish cross. So people are getting them so they don't have to keep depending on the hatcheries. They take 12 weeks instead of eight weeks. I haven't gotten any yet, but hope to soon. Everyone i have spoken to like the American Breese and are sticking to them because they are not as lazy and messy as the Cornish cross and can hatch their own supply. May be something to look into.

I've bred Bresse since 2012. Selected and managed correctly, they are EVERYTHING that is promoted.

I've raised many batches of cornish cross and freedom rangers. Will never go back to cornish cross. They often had leg weakness and I've seen cancers in them too. Any heatwave would kill several. Freedom rangers do well on pasture, have so much more fat and grow quite big by 12 weeks.

We have been raising and breeding Delawares, the original broilers from the 1940's. Barred Rock x New Hampshire. They eat twice as much food and take nearly twice as long to mature as Cornish cross. Breasts half the size. The taste is outstanding however. We move them to fresh grass daily in portable chicken tractors. Next year we go back to Cornish cross primarily. Feed is too expensive. Waiting 12-16 weeks for a nice 5 pound Delaware is too long to mature. I have Cornish cross in the freezer by 8 weeks typically.

What would you get if you breed a cornish cross with a cornish cross? What's the results ?
@andrewhensel38947 ай бұрын
Cornish cross is a hybrid. Hybrid means that you get desirable traits from both parents constantly. However the offspring from a hybrid usually results in "throwback" traits from the original parent lines that may not be desirable, in most instances inconsistent too. In large scale mono culture agriculture, corn varieties are hybrid and wheat varieties are generally non-hybrid, corn seed has to be bought from breeders who have male and female corn varieties producing desirable hybrid seed for the farmers. Where as wheat seed can be kept from last year's harvest and replanted by the farmer over and over again, because it is not a hybrid. Hope this makes sense

I doubt they would live long enough to breed. They grow way too fast and put on so much weight that they couldn't support their own weight.

I wonder if Joel is aware of Frank Reese and the Good Shepherd Conservancy. Frank still has a line of original barred rocks he acquired in the 1950s and has maintained ever since. This was the original broiler and is far more flavorful, healthier to raise, and best of all, can be bred on the farm…meaning you’re not supporting Tyson as you are when you buy Cornish cross chicks.
