Tips for First-Years (From a UChicago Second-Year)!

God, this video was dizzying to edit. I wanted to do something fun, so enjoy these jump cuts.
I want to share some important things about college life that I think can be applied to all incoming freshmen/first-years. It certainly took me a long time to come to these conclusions, so I'm just going to spell it out for y'all. The University of Chicago is huge, and I'm going to give a quick tutorial. :)

Thank you! I want to major in computer science, but so many people drop the course and say it sucks. It’s something I’m really interested in, but those comments are making me scared, as if I am making the wrong decision. Do they drop because it’s not their true passion and they don’t think it’s worth it to them? Classes can be hard, but as long as my aim for the end goal exists, I should keep pushing through, right? I thought I knew what I wanted to do, but now I have no idea what to even expect. It would be cool to be a software engineer and work in that field...

I admit, the way that Uchicago teaches CS 150s (a requirement for the major) is a bit bizarre. HOWEVER, if CS is your passion, then I think it will very much be a labor of love. For me, it just didn't work out because I had absolutely no experience and should have started with the CS 120s. But, again, it's like my financial accounting class - super difficult but I feel so accomplished when I finish the homework. You'll know if you take the class whether it's worth it as a gut reaction. After all, can't have UChicago CS majors without having taken CS 150s. Someone's gotta do it.

This winter hasn't been as gloomy as past winters because it has been relatively short in Chicago. What I will say is that people definitely talk about it on campus, but people are often too busy to get down about it. Houses are constantly holding fun events and, of course, homework every night takes a while. Personally, I feel like the weather is easy to ignore.

It’s a stereotype on the UChicago campus that only rich international students wear Canada Goose jackets because they’re just trying to flex their wealth. It’s people do make a bit of fun of those people because it’s annoying (obvs Canada Goose. It isn’t a brand that’s appreciated for their environmentalism…

Even though I’m just applying to uchic god knows whether I’ll get in - what do you recommend for int students who aren’t used to the cold. I’m from Mumbai rhe coldest it gets here is 15 degrees Celsius
