I go over where, when, and how to find morel mushrooms. This video took place on the east side of Mt. Hood on May 14th 2022.

Thanks for the informative video! This will be my first season hunting for morels (Western WA) and I'm trying to absorb as much info as possible, cheers...

Half frees are hollow all the way through. Verpa Bohemica have a thick cobweb looking structure that fills the void inside the stipe. Black morels and half frees are my favorite especially the latter to make steak gravy with.

Thanks for the tips. 😊It’s my understanding that morels are actually very toxic raw? But cooked they are perfectly fine, obviously, because the toxin breaks down with heat. Mushroom Wonderland just did a video on that topic. Thoughts?

I know they are somewhat toxic. We've never had an issue though. It seems like it doesn't require that much cooking to neutralize it. You can eat king boletes without cooking. Chanterelle and hedgehog mushrooms taste almost spicy if you don't cook them. I think that spicy taste is the toxins.

Great video! There are many videos out there on this topic but this one is definitely the most helpful, so thank you for the informative post. I have been bushwhacking and looking for riparian morels (without much luck) and as you mentioned this looks much more pleasant. I was thinking about heading to Sisters in a week or two to poke around. Do you know of any grand fir stands in that area?

Yeah, we do have luck out there. Look for the hill sides and ridges. The flatter areas immediately by Sisters are dominated by Ponderosa and are pretty devoid of them until you get up on slopes.

Do you normally go into the woods or is it normally right off the road?
@NorthwestGigabyte25 күн бұрын
You don't have to go too far from the road typically.

I’ve never been moshroom hunting I’d really like to go this year I’m in Oregon. Is there any chance you could give me a general area around east mt hood I could go hunt for? Obviously I don’t want to intrude on your honey hole but maybe you could point me in the right direction? I love to cook and I remember trying these at the farmers market but I’d really like to find some wild ones!

Yeah, go 10 miles or so east of Mt. Hood or the cascade crest. 3-4k' of elevation is probably the best. If you go by Sisters it's up on the slopes where there are grand firs, not just ponderosa pine.

Hopefully you leave atleast 50% of the mushrooms. Otherwise you will destroy the next years harvest.
