Hunting Burn Morels- How and where to find them.

Mushroom Wonderland

2 жыл бұрын

In this video we take a trip to eastern Washington to search last years forest fire burn to find beautiful Morel mushrooms.
The fire kills the trees and creates destruction, and the morels seem to thrive in these conditions. So a lucky number of ultra-motivated mushroom lovers take to the hills in search of black gold!(again, I'm talking about morels)
These mushrooms are a delicacy and can fetch over $80 lb in markets. In this video my wife, my dog and I find over 100 burn morels and talk all about the habitat and experience throughout the video.
Thanks for subbing to the channel. Mush-love everyone.

I live in the middle of the dixie fire scar and this year has been phenomenal mushroom hunting, hundreds of morels and I found my first ever cauliflower mushroom which I harvested twice, twenty two pounds the first time and 12 lbs more after it grew back a second time.

Thanks for the video. I always tell my wife there is something truly magical about finding these treasures in the forest. You can look and look for miles and hours and when you start finding them, it’s all worth it.

I graduated from college this year. My parents know that because I'm disabled, I can't hunt for mushrooms on my own; however, they know how badly I've wanted to try Morels. As a graduation present, my amazing parents bought me a little pack of dried Morels from online. I'm so excited to try them, and I hope one day I can find some fresh ones of my own

Dear Mr Hilliard, thank you for your fascinating videos! I am from Ukraine, and after the Russian invasion in February, for many weeks, it was strangely hard for me to watch any video or listen to even my favourite music. And your mushroom videos were the first things that I started to watch in those days (I even didn't have a normal internet connection so I watched the videos with 240p quality). It was amazing and also very calming in those crazy weeks: the beauty of the PNW forests, the charm of American winter mushrooms... Nowadays my native forests in Kyivan Polissia between Borodianka and Bucha, where I used to pick mushrooms, are not a good place to walk because of land mines and artillery shells... So it goes. But at least I am happy to watch your engaging and informative videos about mushroom picking in the beautiful North American forests. Sincerely, Oleksii.

That was my understanding too - that if it burned too hot, there likely wouldn't be morels. But I saw people picking them in a super-charred area (trees completely charred, no foliage, ground just black mud/ash) at Schneider Springs yesterday - and indeed I went in and found a few. (They were just really dirty)

I would love to but they have eluded me so far. I've never found a spring King, but I do live in western Washington so the rare chances I get to be in habitat that would accommodate those mushrooms I'm looking for morels and have not got fortunate enough to find one. But I'm always filming so if I ever do it will for sure make it into a video! Thanks for the comment.

Hi, congratulations for your video, I'm your new subscriber, I'm following you from Italy 🇮🇹 I wanted to ask you a question, I see you find those Morels in coniferous woods that have been set on fire, according to your experience, how long must pass after the fire before they start? And are they always born every year or just the first time? Thank you I hope you can answer me😊👍👋👋

I was there Fri-Sat, but left early on Saturday before the rain (apparently). Found about 1LB total in 4 patches on Friday. They were all in sunny open spots between 3400-3800ft. Anything with substantial tree cover seemed like the ground was too cold. Were you finding roughly the same thing? It sounds like you might have been a bit lower in elevation? (I tried hitting the same elevations/aspects on Saturday in a different valley but came up with nothing...) After seeing your video I'm tempted to head back though!

I have been trying to identify Elm trees this spring in the hopes of finding Morels in the near future. Because of the Dutch Elm Disease these trees are hard to find. When I saw your video on Burn Morels I investigated recent fires in my area. I found a few burn sites and plan to get out there soon. One rather large fire back in 2021 in Clarksburg, North Adams and WIlliamstown I thought may be a good place to go searching for Morels. Is it too old a burn site to expect to find them?
@mushroomwonderland1
@mushroomwonderland1 2 ай бұрын
I'm not even sure exactly where those places are, what state. Here in Western Washington we don't have elm trees, a lot of our natural morels seem to associate with conifers here, like Douglas-fir. Many different species associate with many different forest types.

I'm really highly considering heading out there just to make a video about this topic. I ask everywhere, nobody seems to have a ton of personal experience, it's a lot of hearsay. It's a long ways for me to drive just to strike out, I've heard a couple people say that they come back but not as strong, and usually more clustered, which sounds cool to me. I think I have to go back to the same spot this year to follow up on this video.

The burn site morels are not as good as the morels we pick in the midwest in the spring! Ours are bigger, thicker, meatier and tasting much better than the burn site morels, the only trade off is a longer season out west, and they grow in more abundance, but they are paper shells with no flavor,
