Thanks! Great video. What are the best colours for layering besides transparent? Does it matter if they are staining or not? I notice when I layer that some colours stay put whereas others immediately lift and shift which leaves a streaky mess. Any tips for figuring that out? Thanks!!
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 3 жыл бұрын
Each brand has a way of denoting transparency and staining factor. If you look at their color charts it will usually explain it. Using that information, you can start off knowing which colors will lift and which will stain.
@kendraart
@kendraart 3 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, I know how to find out which colours are staining or transparent etc. Just wondering which are better for layering. Cobalt blue doesn’t stain but I can layer fine over it. Is it just trial and error or do you know of which colours hold up best to being glazed over? Thanks
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 3 жыл бұрын
@@kendraart Ohh sorry I misunderstood. Yea, it's mainly trial and error because each color will act differently from each brand. For instance M Graham uses honey in their binder and I've seen videos where they are more easily lifted. It also depends on how much brushing is involved. If the first color is dry, and you only sweep one color over it, there's less of a chance to reactive the first color and you get a clean glaze. My colors are really easy to layer and I don't get muddy messes.
@kendraart

Hi Sarah! You already did a video for painting foggy landscapes with watercolors,do you have any tips for do it with gouache (thick version)? Can I do glazing with gouache or there is differnce?
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 4 жыл бұрын
Hello! Glazing with gouache is mucher harder because of the fact that it can be reactivated with water after it's dry. So the moment you add a diluted wash on top of a dry layer, it will start to blend. If you go VERY thin with your washes it acts more like watercolor...but at that point you might as well use watercolor? You can experiment, but honestly I wouldn't bother glazing with gouache. I'd mix the colors I need and apply them where they need to be, rather than layering to "mix" the colors.

Thank you Sarah for the excellent explanation as well as the very handy glazing chart. This may sound a bit dumb, but every time I see one of those much larger colour mixing charts where it feels enormous and visually confusing, I wonder if it is just me who doesn’t fully understand their construct. Perhaps you have a simplified version, or alternatively, a better way of explaining it? If this makes sense, I’ll be surprised! Maybe someone else feels visually confused looking at them, and if so, does anyone have a different way of making them? I’m really hoping I’m not simply the weird one here... 🤪🎨👩‍🎨
@SarahBurnsStudio

Thanks Anita! Yes, I do have a way of explaining it...but it's a bit difficult through messages! lol I showed how I make a chart similar to my giant one here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWSWfJqFd5aarqc - this is gouache but you can apply this method to any paint. I also did a quick search and this video is a demo for the same method, very thorough: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpOll6CBZamFbtE But there are so many ways you can do the charts! It really just depends on what information you're looking for.

no worries, you are not weird 😊 human brain processing and understanding things just work often on different ways. I don't mean intelligence and able to comprehend I literally mean the way of processing info can work differently. for example high intelligent people can overcomplicate things and just reach the inability to understand the matter, while they just have to think more simple ☺ I hope I make sense lol 🤭 so getting confused it's not weird at all you just process differently 😊 different schooling/teaching systems over the world has a influence on this as well.

Thank you so much for this very informative lesson. Do you have a list of the pigments that aren't 100% permanent? I have ruined paintings because the under color "bloomed" when the top wash was applied. The first wash was 100% dry. So frustrating. Thanks again!!
@SarahBurnsStudio

You have to look at how staining the pigment is. The more staining, the more permanent it is. Lay the more permanent colors first. And make sure it’s 100% dry before glazing.

These are really nice. I tend not to do swatches as I like to be surprised with the colours that come out via glazing. Have you tried InkTense?(I can't remember who makes it, sorry.) It paints like watercolour (comes as sticks and pencils - I prefer the sticks) but dries like ink and colours applied on top once dry, don't disturb the layer underneath. They look really dark in block form, but are super-bright on application.
