I went to an Asian market and they had a cantaloupe crossed with a honeydew melon. It was the most delicious fruit I’ve ever had in my life so I dried the seeds and I got 7 sprouts out of the 30 seeds. Super excited for harvest season!!!!

Hey Luke! I have been growing Minnesota Midget cantaloupe in 18 gallon tubs and it has been working out well. I will be harvesting my first fruit from them in a couple days. I would highly recommend that variety for pots. They have a short grow season for those of us who live in the north country which is a must in my area. You and Sindy have a great day!

Many thanks for this video. We planted some cantaloupe seeds just to see if they'd grow. We now have about 70 plants. I guess I'll start filling containers. lol You also answered a question as to why I've never had luck growing pumpkins. I tended to plant pumpkin at the edge of the garden so I could train them onto the lawn and keep them manageable. This also meant they had the vines disturbed regularly while mowing, weeding, etc. Now I know to not move the vines. I had no idea those little roots along the vine were important. Seams obvious in hindsight. My son and his girlfriend are vegan now so I'll try my best to keep them supplied with fresh healthy, homegrown, pesticide free veggies and fruit. Your videos make the enjoyable task of growing your own food easier and even more enjoyable. A very big thank you. Keep up the good work. We appreciate it.

A large growing bag could be the solution. I heard that you can sew them from landscaping material (or ask the producer of such materials what they recommend). There is even a chance to move it (for instance from frost, or they can be covered during the night), one could start out with a cellulose pot and prepare seedlings indoors, I heard they are VERY sensitive to frost, but on the other hand they are also need a long growing season. So one could take advantage of a nice spring but when it gets cold the smaller "pots" are taken indoors and as soon as the frosts are over (late April in many regions in the temperate climate zone, the pot goes into the larger growing bag which is nearby a house or wall (so it will be warmer). it needs a lot of sun to develop the sugar.

Thanks Luke!!! Great video!! I had eaten a cantaloupe a month ago and decided to save the seeds!! Glad I did! I planted them in egg shells in the egg container [recycle baby!! LOL] June 1st, 2016...they have come up already!! We just did our first veggie garden this year and had planted a couple rows of corn, tomatoes, onions [had onions that sprouted in the bag and said: Hey, why not!?!] and the same with our potatoes [no seed taters here!! Saved us some $ !!] and have other veggies..swiss chard, green & yellow beans, collard greens, parsley [LOVE!!] Broccoli, asparagus, of course, we didnt think THAT far ahead of HOW MUCH space the big leafies will grow! So, great to see your video!! I have really big plastic planters and will def try this!! Will have to give some of my plantings to our neighbor as we have about 20 plants! LOL Again, thanks and happy gardening!!! Pam Zirbel, Upstate Western NY !!!

Had a delicious cantaloupe. Set the seeds aside in my coffee grounds that I save for my garden. About 4 or 5 days later I threw them in this big clay pot I have thats just there with old dirt that gets watered because its next to my garden lol so the dirt is good. Anyways, literally I wiped away the top like half an inch, carelessly threw the cantaloupe seeds in, covered them up with a little dirt, then watered, seeds went floating, oh well ok whatevs... Yesterday I went to clean out my garden of weeds (about a week later if that) and I had set my strawberry plant on top of the seeds I threw in, like I said I honestly was being careless... I laughed! When I picked up the strawberry plant I saw tons of long seedlings like 5 inches long. So apparently Im now growing cantaloupes! Cool! 🍈😄

Meanwhile I will be thrilled to get one or two home-grown babies for a first try.

+MIgardener | Simple Organic Gardening & Sustainable Living +MIgardener | Simple Organic Gardening & Sustainable Living - I just found this very informative video on container growing, and have a question. Do you have, or could you PLEASE make a detailed video, showing the correct way to prune a cantaloupe plant?!? I have searched SO many videos here on KZbin for a detailed step by step video on pruning cantaloupe plants, and am just super disappointed by not really finding any valuable, helpful videos! 😢 I am actually growing my 4 cantaloupe plants in 2 straw bales (2 plants ber bale...1st year straw bale gardening too!!) with a tall home made trellis behind them, and they're doing awesome as far as all the greenery and sprawling vines, but I only have 3 nice sized fruits (and yes...TONS OF pollinators!! 🐝). I believe I could possibly help my guys get going even better IF I knew the proper way to prune them. I've read good articles about how to prune them, but I'm the visual type where I really need to SEE what to do, more than just READ about it, in order to do it correctly so that I DON'T screw something up! I've asked for this help from others elsewhere as well, but NO ONE seems willing/able to reply back! Thanks in advance for ANY help you can give me!! Two years ago I found your video on how to keep birds out of strawberry patches by painting rocks as strawberries, so my 2 younger daughters and I did just that, and we had SO MANY more strawberries saved last year by doing so! And we had a BLAST together painting them! 🍓🐦 I really love all your helpful videos, so again...thanks!!

It has info on the food grade buckets to use and how to put in drain holes, etc. I really like not having to bend over down to the ground so much. I grow cantaloupe vertically, so a trellis with the pot may help contain the sprawl of the vine for space-challenged gardeners. However, I was surprised to learn about pumpkins vines gathering energy to produce the pumpkins by putting down roots along the nodes. I'm growing them for the very first time this year and was attempting to grow them vertically as well. I can see then that this might not be the most successful way of doing so. Thanks for another informative video.

I think you'll be OK with the pumpkin and would suggest looking up hydroponic pumpkins and looking at the images. Seems to me that they grow well vertically as long as you limit the fruit and support them well.

Great episode, Luke. I'm new to Michigan gardening (or gardening period, for that matter) and I'm trying to grow 2 cantaloupe vines in my aquaponics system. They started out really well, grew fast, seemed to flower pretty early, but then...nothing. They still have a few flowers but the growth seems to have stopped completely and some of the leaves are turning brown and dying. It even looks like it might be shrinking. One of them is in a normal ebb and flow bed and the other is in a floating raft type bed. Any idea what might be going on there? I've peeked at the root system in the raft bed and it is massive, so that seems to be okay...Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

It will be difficult to thin to a certain number per plant because I have them intensely planted together so i thought that was a good compromise. Or is it unnecessary when you're growing in the ground? I have heard it helps with ripening, fruit size and, as I live in NEPA we don't have a terribly long summer(although longer than yours I'm sure ;-) ) Any thoughts?

it is honestly un-necessary when growing in-ground because they will get way more water, and way more nutrient (provided you have given them that)

Move.😂😂. I'm not being mean. I used to live in NEPA, now live in SC, and haven't been back in about 6 yrs. Need to go to settle some things, a cemetery plot I own. Check on family cemetery, only family there that can, youngest probably 70. Don't quite know if that provides enough guilt. Lol. Wish you well. As far as I was concerned there were about 90 days of summer. Here in SC, ABOUT 70 days of winter- I 'll take that flip.🖒🖒

Hi Luke, First off --- We PLANT, God GROWS!! Have you ever planted any thing in 5 hallon buckets? I have Irish potatoes, Early Girl tomatoes, Hale's Best canta - loupe (from a seed package), Munchers cucumbers ( also from a seed package), & 3 slips of sweet potatoes, which was given to me, but the kind is unknown. I have a Patio tomato too, but I put her in my mother's silver pot, but both of the tomatoes have Blossom End Rot, BUT --- I have gotten 2 small ones from the Patio. I have neen giving them (both) watered - down milk (2% into skim). Is there any way I could share my pictures to you to show you?

I'm a 1st timer. I just planted a few days a go. I need to see the next steps after they begin to grow. I know I have to separate them and put them in another pot. But I'm lost after that. Do I put a net on them to grow or something? I'm lost

I'm giving them a try again this year. Last year I couldn't get them to grown, I think my soil was too heavy. They grew a little after I added a bit of sand, but not enough to produce any fruit. I'm going to try growing them in a large container this year but I'm having trouble with drainage. Even after I added loads of sand the water only drains for a few seconds, then it just seats there. Maybe I should just try on the ground. Do you have any ideas of what I could do to help drainage? Perlite is currently out of stock everywhere I tried. :/ Growing melons is going to give me an headache but I'm not ready to quit. :D I have another question, do you have any problems with pests in your watermelons? I'm not sure what to expect if mine do end up growing. Thank you for your videos. :)

What is the best soil composition for melon/cantaloupe given that I have the following: vermiculite, sand, burnt soil, compost, black soil, composted chicken manure, bonemeal and vermicast? A ratio would be appreciated. Thank you!!

I disagree with not being able to grow pumpkins in contaners as I've done it before. Granted it's very difficult but not impossible.
