Just a few extra tips: 1. make a couple color photo copy of your passport, this has been handy for when I would stay at hotels and they request for it. Losing a copy of your passport is no biggy. 2. go ahead and bargain with the locals, it will not seem rude. You have to forget your western way of thinking when traveling. bargain at one place and then bargain at another place pretty much right next door, you will see where the set price is then you can try to go from there. again it is not rude if you bargain with them, paying full price, will create a thinking that they can rip off tourists more easily. this goes for street vendors, and gift shops, if they have set prices on their food cart, then you wouldn't negotiate but you can try. the pineapple thing, you should bargain, it's not a white tax, it's a toruist that still doesn't know how to negotiate price. again, get it out of your head that bargaining is bad. 3. bring pepto or anti diarreahea meds, take it 20 min before you eat, and it can help you tremendously. 4. don't drink anything that has solid ice cubes, most of the time those are unfiltered water, only icecubes with the holes in the center, those are filtered in actual ice machines. however, if you are going to be there longer than a couple weeks, go ahead and get the food poisoning out of the way, and your body will be accilmated to the bacteria of that country.

Hi. I just got from Vietnam last month. Invitation letter? What? Never heard of that and I never had to get one. I just got a visa at the Vietnamese Consulate in Houston. Around $80. That's it. No invitation letter. Also, if you go to the Vietnamese Embassy's site, there's nothing about invitation letters. Maybe I am misunderstanding? Do you mean visa?
@Edgesofearth5 жыл бұрын
- to get a visa you need an invitation letter. If you went to the consulate, they probably created invitation letter and Visa all together.. from what I understand, everyone needs an invitation letter..🤔
@santiviet26565 жыл бұрын
Well if you make your visa online is very eassy download the form, pay few buck around 8 d for the services send them and in two working days if you not in hurry ,they send you back by email what is call.. the visa acepted.... download, dont forget!! Bring with you the visa accepted letter show ...on the visa airport ofice and you get visa strait away...upon payment, of course!
@quangb90806 жыл бұрын
It's called visa on arrival. It's so you don't need to get a visa stamp ahead of time. I used the visa on arrival on my first 2 trips to VN and they also offer a service where there's a person that picks you up when you land and take care of getting the visa stamp faster than if you didn't use their service.
@Edgesofearth6 жыл бұрын
- Strange. I did the visa process 4 separate times for Vietnam, and each time, I was required to get an invitation letter before the visa stamp on arrival. Without the letter, a stamp would not be given...that is what I read, and experienced. I watched countless foreigners at the border ever denied because they didn't have an invitation letter. All from different countries.
@quangb90806 жыл бұрын
I believe it's part of the visa on arrival process. Your name is listed on a list of a bunch of other names that also applied for visa on arrival. First time I showed it at the airport in Los Angeles, they didn't even know what it was. Second time, they knew. Guess it's a relatively new process.

I have travel to VN many times beginning in 2000 from the US. I have never used an invitation letter, only applied for visa , from a month to 3 months. Never had a problem, even used Visa on arrival for 3 months, all w/o an invitation letter..
@Edgesofearth4 жыл бұрын
- if you use an agency and apply for the visa, they probably create the invitation letter at the same time and it is a package deal. that is my only guess. i entered vietnam three or four times and every single time they would not let me cross back into vietnam without the letter.. and once i had the letter in my hand then they would issue the visa. i cannot tell you how many people i seen stopped in between two countries (Vietnam and Cambodia) because they did not prepare the invitation letter in advance. they had a special department for these people and it took like 4 hours for them to get an invitation letter created on the spot and an extra one hundred us dollars, and then they could issue the visa. maybe the agency you went through created both the same time, creating the illusion that you only had one document, but there were 2 behind the scenes... 🤔
@Cyclotreker4 жыл бұрын
Edges Of Earth I appreciate you lengthy response. :). But I as still baffled about the letter. Yes, I have used an agency via internet but they just always take my information and ask me a a few questions, then I wait a few weeks, and I am my visa letter(if I am doing Visa on arrival). I have sometimes paid for multiple entries too, like going to Cambodia and Laos. Also, one time I was in Manila, got the visa at embassy there after waiting only about 3 days. .and it was always cheap. Last time in 2018 for one month visa to VN was less than $30 but then you have to pay for the stamp when you arrive, which I think was $60 ..

Great heads up for beginners that have never lived nor traveled to Vn. Yeah I’d echo other comments and point out they are ALL backpacker travel tips. I’ve lived here in VN for years in a VN neighborhood with a VN wife and spit VN 12 hours a day. To be sure there are a gamut if different tips regarding that lifestyle which differ. Be that as it may I liked what you said about vn people going crazy on fb or phone calls once they get in touch. I threw away my VN phone number. It gets crazy after ya meet 200 ppl. Infinite invitations hellos, weird messages etc... I did want to say however that the vn hospitals are absolutely fantastic!!! Better than the USA by far, super fast and ridiculously cheap. I say so from direct extensive first hand experience. Of course if you spit viet and know what ur doing it’s great. If you judge the whole medical system based on poor cripples on the street only and not first hand then I understand ur assumption. Traffic is only crazy (totally insane) in the beginning especially if you come from a small town and move to Hanoi or Saigon directly: I spend at least an hour a day on my bicycle in traffic in Vietnam (Hue city in my case) I think it’s perfectly rational and super easy to navigate. Ur right about the 90% motorbike thing. That’s part of the beauty i think. I simply tell newbies “grow a pair of balls”. Until then it’ll seem overwhelming. Anyway thanks for putting the time into making this vid. Even though I don’t agree with everything I think you will do a lot of good for a lot of newbies out there as for sorta what to expect. Keep up the great work! Cheers!

- Totally. The basics. Interesting about the hospitals. The epic lines outside are mind boggling. Even my VN friend visit the hospital in HCMC because of instant & severe stomach and back pain. The Dr said you are having this issue because you drink 1 cup of coffee a day. Stop drinking coffee. That was it. Wtf. Correct, I am a taveler that doesn't dig his roots in to the country for too long. My perspective would be different than that of someone who has lived and plugged in to the working society.

@Edgesofearth3 жыл бұрын
- just as a side note, very few people actually eat this type of meat. When I taught at a school, I would always ask the children what their favorite meat was. 95% of them said chicken. The remainder was a division between mouse and dog. And when the students would say that, all of the other students would look at them with a crazy look and started saying things to them in Vietnamese lol. While living there for more than a year, I had only seen dog for sale at a restaurant once. It was on full deep-fried display with an apple in its mouth. You will never be served dog unless you specifically ask for it. Unless of course you eat a hot dog or a sausage, then you will never know...

I'm not sure I'd tell a Vietnamese person to "go away" from the spot she was selling... as an American especially. If we are lazy, or take pity, and pay too much - it has the effect of vendors and drivers not dealing with locals in favor of Westerners. This has already happened in Thailand in the early 90's. It's a problem that Thai TV News and the papers report on, especially Taxi Meters.

I watched a Harvard lecture on morality and the white tax is based on Rawl's veil of ignorance: "Prior to being born suppose no one knows his place in society, his class position or social status, nor does anyone know his fortune in the distribution of natural assets and abilities, his intelligence, strength, and the like. I shall even assume that the parties do not know their conceptions of the good or their special psychological propensities. The principles of justice are chosen behind a veil of ignorance." Since you didn't know what status you were in, the morality should be about helping the weakest of the weak, and the rich should be obligated to help the poor. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJSvZ2mwrcRphNE
@Edgesofearth6 жыл бұрын
- Since I didn't know what status I was in? Not sure if you have ever traveled to Southeast Asia before.. but let me make it perfectly clear that I have personally been in the beautiful and expensive homes of people who have a business of scamming tourists as a tuk tuk driver, or as food vendors in tourist areas who charge more for foreigners, or as a tour guide who charges significantly more for a foreigner and a local price for a local tourist. In all examples, the same about of product/service/work is require, but more money is taken for what purpose? These people were happy to share with me their dirty little secret. They ALL knew that they would't be living in their beautiful house and brand new car/motorbike (more beautiful than my parents home living in the USA with nice Jobs), if they weren't cheating tourists. They weren't fools and absolutely knew what they were doing was wrong. So, no, I don't support this activity - at all. Helping the poor is by actually giving them business by purchasing their product or service. If they need to charge more to sustain themselves, awesome. Set the price point in such a way that everyone pays the same. This is a topic that I could literally write for hours about. It's a very deep topic. But the end-result is that this practice is unethical.

Advice for scraggily pubescent folks who have nothing and seek hostels in which to stay - NOT for EXPATS! For those looking for low cost but not indigent level accommodations, long term hotels are available for low rates and a rice cooker allows oneself to avail themselves of the myriad wet markets where you can obtain and cook healthy whole fruit and veggies for a very low price. Similarly, he seems focused on how to skate below the requirements - ie how to teach without the proper qualifications and credentials. If this is what you are looking for, good luck. Otherwise, seek out more informed advice as to how to visit Vietnam and enjoy both a better quality of life and actually see and do more.

There is an arrogance of Western superiority displayed when one is unwilling to accept the cultural norms of another society. In many cultures it is considered rude and ignorant to not engage in the activity of bargaining for price or terms of sale. The western neoliberal concept of market pricing as immutable comes from the commodification of wage-labor where many consider it to be unpalatable to know that there wages are always negotiable but favor accepting what is offered so that the laborer doesn’t have to confront the cognitive dissonance of selling themselves into what is effectively wage-slavery. When we transfer this discomfort to other cultures, we more often deny the locals an ability to effectively compete on quality, convenience or service and this is simply shameful, albeit born of ignorance. If I don’t insist that local drivers conform to my homeland’s rules of the road, then why would I demand that local vendors conform to my preferences for exchange or transaction. Be fair, be equitable and be kind but never be ashamed to bargain when that is what is expected and bargaining opens up greater opportunities for social interaction and mutual understanding. And yes, I am shaming colonialist cultures for perpetrating economic crimes against humanity by dehumanizing native cultural beliefs and practices. Sellers are not necessary looking to deceive through the practice of bargaining, sometimes the process is just one of discovery and timing. Remember that Western culture would rather have full shelves and fixed pricing, and sacrifice over 40% of food production directly into waste, than have an honest market transaction that would minimize waste to nearly zero and not have millions of people around the globe die from starvation or malnutrition. Your actions have consequences beyond what is immediately apparent; learn the cultures of your host are not individually driven but are part of a much larger political system that has reason for being.

- I don't. I simply remove the moments of time where nothing was said. Dead space. Your welcome.

@@Edgesofearth Thanks for the honest answer. My recommendation would be to leave the silence there, unless you are literally blanking out for seconds at a time. It's off-putting to see the jitteryness and stuttering. I haven't seen that in any other video on Youtubt and it isn't a good first look.
