As a portrait and fashion photographer, I am expanding into videography. I’m lucky enough to have worked with makeup artists and set designers double-dipping in both the commercial fashion world and the world of filmmaking. With that background in mind, I totally agree with you that your network is very important and the willingness to doing free work to get your name out there and to build demo reels. Again, great content, Mark. (Btw my Song FX6 just came in earlier this week after three months. Yay!)

Great video Mark, I'm trying do a few small commercial jobs this year and getting the corporate epidemic sounds would make my work way better than trying to find free copyright music. I currently am just using the individual license from epidemic sounds for my KZbin channel. If I can get a few more gigs I think I'd make the switch. Markups is the way to go 👌

So epidemic sounds doesn't have anything in a user agreement that forbids licensing their music as if it's your own? Am I understanding that correctly or is this a setup that you are fulfilling a role as saving them the time of finding the music on their own? That seems like an infringement hearing it for the first time. Like if I downloaded photos from a royalty free stock site, I wouldn't think I could afterwards license those same photos.

One big thing I see a lot with juniors trying to get into the television industry is they really oversell themselves. I've seen resumes where people list themselves as Director, Producer, Cinematographer, Editor and Screenwriter yet they're applying for an assist/PA role with just their student film as listed experience. I think being honest about your experience and managing expectations is huge with employers.

I concur mr cable. There is nothing wrong with being honest. In fact, people trust you more when you are and more often you get promoted quicker when you’re trustworthy

Some great insights, and would like to add some perspective from my experience ... if you don't want to be a "filmworker" one day, then you have to learn how to tell a great story. It's very hard in film/video, so you can get plenty of practice by telling stories verbally while you learn the skills. Great story tellers are few and far between -- just look at Hollywood, tons of crap stories being pumped out so more evidence of how rare it is even when the talent is top notch. Additionally, as a storyteller, you don't need a reel ... you need a portfolio of great stories that fit your target client. But, if you are a cinematographer or even camera operator, yes a reel is what will help you get hired by Filmmakers who are the actual storytellers. So that's my best advice, do you truly want to be a storyteller and all that comes with it? Then focus on telling great stories with the technical bits as a means to an end.... but if you just want to shoot/edit/light whatever to help someone else tell a great story, embrace that. Filmworkers need to see filmmakers as their clients .... so yeah all the advice Mark gave about filmworkers coming to set with a great attitude and being professional is spot on. Unless you are some unique genius, and sorry, few are, then your professionalism and positive presence and work ethic AND skills are what will get you hired and ESPECIALLY re-hired. If I have a choice between 5 editors all charging about the same, similar skills, and 2 of them are unprofessional and unpleasant human beings, guess who I'm not going to hire? Same goes with how Filmmakers are hired and re-hired by their clients (brands/investors), but trust me there are no shortage of filmworkers to choose from. This is industry is mostly relation based, and a reputation of integrity (ie Proverbs) is just as important as your gear and skills, in my opinion. Last thing ... As a filmmaker, I would never in a million years hire a filmworker with a reel that's only with an iPhone. And I don't know any brands that would either. Because it shows me they have no experience working with even basic cameras and certainly haven't gotten enough paid experience to buy a proper camera.... or aren't committed to buying one on credit. The point of entry, especially used gear, or renting gear, is so low that I'm sorry is just a terrible idea for anyone who wants to make money at this. Mark seems like a wonderfully nice guy, so perhaps he was just being too nice. Or hey, maybe I'm just wrong. :)

Perhaps, and this could be my complete optimistic naivete, you could land a job doing an iphone commercial if all you have is a reel shot with an iphone?

I agree that there is a need to work for free to start out in the business - but we should acknowledge and really advocate for people starting in the industry - expecting people to work for free is wrong, damaging, corrupting and exacerbates the idea that you don't need to pay creatives when we literally don't pay each other. The reason the industry lacks diversity in every form - is in large part because there is a financial barrier to entry. My response to the issue is - if you have to work for free to get in - that's fine - that's not your problem. If you're in a position to offer work and opportunity however it is, 100% your problem. If you're making someone work for free - you're doing the wrong thing, straight up. If you're wondering why rates are getting lower or why people expect to have films made for nothing - and you've "hired" someone for free - you are part of that problem. There's a place for interning, shadowing and work experience - even then, expenses should be covered. If you're zero budget - fair play. But, when you get budgets, the first people to get paid with your budget should be the lowest on the credits. I'm personally doing pretty well these days (some days) and if I get to hire an assistant, I pay them. If I get offered a small fee on a short - I tell my producers I'm going to get a good credit and some stuff for my reel, sort my expenses then pay my assistant, pay the runner, pay the people who can't use this for their reel. I'm not disagreeing that you might have to work for free - I'm saying that we, people doing well and that have some sway in out networks, should constantly be talking about how to un-normalise that.

In the past I did, but I’ve stopped caring about age. I care about the projects I am personally making, that’s the only thing I can control. I can’t control how old someone else is and what they’re doing, it’s a waist of time. I just try and let it motivate me to care about the stories I’m telling as much as the next generation!
