Great tips! Thanks for posting. Don't listen to the nerds. The peanut gallery on KZbin is made up of angry losers that can't make it in the real world of video production. They are jealous because you are successful.

Great video and examples! But why a shotgun (indoors)? A cardoid will not get reflections from the back and you can get it a bit closer to the person, because there is no (long!) interference tube. Am I missing something? I use an Austrian Audio CC8 single or as a pair for almost everything (voice, guitar, singing, ambient, stereo recording ...) and am very happy with it. Does also not cost an arm and a leg.

My goodness! EVERYTHING WORKS LIKE THIS IN 2024! Not just film/video. If you’re a baker you can’t simply make cakes anymore. You’ve got to have a full color coded presentation complete with backstory and design. Why? Because it’s what’s expected in this day and time! By ANYONE WHO HAS ACCESS TO ANYTHING MEDIA. That means everyone! Strangely enough, this video is a Code Cracker. Super thanks to you my dude! You have no idea what door you just opened. And I never made it past 2:25.

great video. goal is to start booming shotguns more on interviews instead of defaulting to lav all the time. couldn't agree more about people putting the full rode packs on the shirt no lav, absolutely insane

great video, and also great comment about Goldeneye! Could you do some more audio tips for youtubers and try to get more of them to watch/listen to your videos please! Some of the audio I’m hearing on otherwise great YT videos is really horrible.

Finally someone who puts the LAV in the right spot. Just below the bump on the sternum. It's my go-to trick for good audio when filming. It's also why I hate subjects in t-shirts with a passion and have bought vampire tabs for my lavs.

This is very helpful because these are shots that more inexperienced people will face, and now we know how to improve them, thanks so much Mark!

Saw the Sanken in the thumbnail and knew some good knowledge was gonna be dropoed. People. Sell your BS rode and DJI toys and buy a real mic. Buy a sanken. Even a countryman. But seriously. Once you use a sanken mic through a lectrosonics pack, you'll realise that until that day you've just been pissing around with kiddies tinker toys.

I know a lot of people who shoot these interviews will resort to lapel mics. In my experience, using a boom mic set-up for audio is much more preferable. Not only is the audio cleaner in general, you don't need to waste time worrying about hiding mics and you won't get rustle on a boom :) You're welcome!

I wouldn't say fx3 sensor is better in low light because of its lower megapixel count and size. This still a myth in the image capturing world. There will be times that the 12 mp looks near identical to sensor with double or triple megapixels, but thats only when its limited to image size/viewing screen orf about 30cm. Once it goes you to 1.2 metre screen in 4k the fx3 image is going to have to be upscaled to something like 128 PPI and on a screen that size, the noise will blocky and have a lot of colour noise. Larger sensors with low megapixels can be good at very specific sizes and viewing distances, but overall pixel size does matter anywhere as much anymore with back side illumination and dual gain iso.

Nice video!! Can you tear apart your own shot?.. the shot at 14:39 (#2. look for color contrast), pretty dark. Unless you were going for that "murder" look.. haha.. guy needs some light in his eyes

I love every single advice you give on filming, but this time I have to say that you did say some crazy things about audio 😂. Moving a mic from the chest to the neck doesn't change the pitch, and pointing the mic to the chest doesn't sound better than pointing directly to the mouth. If that was the case we would point mics to the chest for singers too. Pointing a mic to the mouth is the best option if you know how to process audio. I hope i dont come off as arrogant or anything like that. I am a musician and i know a little bit about audio and sound design so i wanted to share my opinion

Such a great topic! I personally prefer the sound of either a boom or headset mic. Not too crazy about the boomi chest sound of a lav, but no getting around it. For lavs, precut moleskin is my old reliable. One trick to make it comfortable is have the person who the talent is with put it on for them. Very easy to point to the spot on the chest and say angle it toward the mouth. They're always happy to help and everyone's comfortable 😁

In a pinch- I’ve had to always prioritize good audio over good imagery, even though it’s not ideal. But hey, if our voice sounds buttery enough to speak to your soul, I think that’s a start. 😂
